For this essay you will write a 600-700 word (not including the heading and title) descriptive essay over a famous person from the 20th century. Try to describe their physical characteristics so that even though I have never met them, I can Google them to compare them to your descriptions. I must get a vivid picture of them in my head through your writing. Personality traits are fine, but you need to focus more on their physical traits.

For example the introduction and conclusion can be biography but the body of the essay (paragraphs 2-4) must focus on the physical traits. The goal is for me to see them from your descriptions–like a police sketch artist.

Often times when I grade these essays I will look at a picture of this person as I read to see how well you describe your person. Many times students will leave off key parts of the face that should be not only been listed, but also described in great detail. Remember all of the parts to a person’s head alone: head, hair, eyes, eye lashes, eye brows, nose, nostrils, cheeks, chin, lips, teeth, ears, earlobes etc. Some of you focused on the clothes your person wears rather than what they look like. When I grade these essays I will draw a picture based on your descriptions as I read so I can see what is left out of your descriptions.

Do NOT include their clothing or attire in your description. What they wear is not important or relevant in this essay.

As you learned last week, a dilemma is a difficult decision – a choice that is difficult because no matter your decision, things may not always work out for all involved. What creates this difficulty is the tension between competing values. In social work, dilemmas occur when one or more of the core social work values compete against one another. Often, a social worker is faced with a decision that can be supported of either side by a social work value. For example, perhaps one side of the decision may be supported by dignity and worth of a person; however, the alternative side of the dilemma may be supported by integrity. The easiest way to conceptualize this would be framing it like this – If I do _____________, that decision would be supported by (social work core value). On the other hand if I do_____________, that would be supported by (social wok core value).

For reference sake, the core values are service, integrity, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of human relationships, and competence. These are outlined and defined in the NASW Code of Ethics, found in this week’s reading material.

Given the scenario last week, please discuss the competing values in the dilemma. You should not only list them, but explain how these values are relevant, and hat about those values creates that competing tension. Your post should demonstrate that you are able to identify dilemmas, and can analyze the competing values present. This requires that you have a genuine understanding of the core values of social work.

Simply stating competing values is not sufficient here, be sure to explain why they are relevant and how they compete.

Choose one of the topics below and write an essay. The essay type is argumentative, so remember that it is your job to convince the reader that your point of view is the correct one. The essay needs to be at least 1,000 words in length and should include the following items:

• An interesting introduction with a clear thesis statement
• At least 3 body paragraphs (one must be an expansion paragraph such as a counterargument, transition, definition, historical background or extended example)
• At least one paraphrase and one quote informally cited
• An effective conclusion

Therefore, you should write 5 or more well-supported paragraphs. Be sure to take some time to organize your thoughts and brainstorm for ideas before you begin writing. Remember to think about the other point of view as well, it will help if you to refute the other side in a counterargument. Use strong and vivid language to support your viewpoint. When referring to the opposition, it’s best to use neutral or weaker language through hedging.
