The reflections are personal application of the material discussed in class to your personal life or that that you have seen or witnessed. It is NOT A SUMMARY of the chapter. You may choose any chapter to reflect on however reflections are due within a week from the day we finish discussing the chapter in class. Because of the online change below are the deadlines to for reflections on the remaining chapters. Reflections on chapter 1-6 are not accepted anymore.

Length:

Your reflection should be 2-page in length double spaced 12 point font.

Structure:

Your reflection should have a title.

It should introduce and briefly explain one or two concepts from the chapter (e.g. ethnocentrism; high context; cultural shock…) not more than half of a page. After you introduce the concept, you analyze if it looking into how you may have seen it in your life and how providing concrete examples from your life or that of other people you know (e.g. gender roles, as I was growing up I was taught that…). If you disagree with the concept (e.g. the chapter says that Greek culture is high context in general and you disagree) you may provide arguments why you disagree. Again, if you felt that you need to discuss more than one concept, you may discuss two but not more than two. Please note that the sample reflection on blackboard is there as a sample for content and not length. There is no need to conclude your reflection with a summary of what you stated.

You are required to write a book review. The book you choose should be a book of political theory written within the last two years. These reviews do not need to be too long but should follow standard structures for written work, which means that they must contain an argument that is supported with specifics drawn from the text.

These reviews should be about twelve paragraphs long. The first paragraph should entice the reader with a clever opening sentence and should close with a concise thesis.

The second paragraph should clarify the book that you are discussing. What thesis, bias, themes does it suggest or maintain? Do not repeat your first paragraph; just present the evidence for your claim.

Paragraphs 3 to 5 go into the main contentions of the book. Give detailed evidence for your claims.

In paragraphs 6 and 7, contrary or additional evidence from other sources should be presented but should only qualify what is acceptable in the text under review.

In chapters 8 and 9 you should deliver your most important objections.

Ten and 11 should suggest further areas the text should develop or explore and suggest what the text means within its context.

In 12 the merits should be balanced with the faults and there should be one last glance at the author. It is always polite to give the author the final word.

You will be addressing the part of the prompt which follows; “you must identify three instances (quotes) within your chosen text which demonstrate the author/speaker’s intension to polarize and/or sow hatred. You can find two examples of polarization and one for hate, or vis versa, but each should have at least one instance (quote).
