Reading Response Assignment 2

Due April 4th

The reading response should be a short reflection on an assigned reading. You will be required to complete three reading responses throughout the semester. You may turn in your response any time during the unit as long as it is completed by the due dates listed.

Note: Remember that each reading response is now worth 5% of your total grade, therefore your response should be thoughtful and well-edited.

A good reading response will do the following:

• Be at least one page (approximately 300 words)
• Be mostly free of grammatical or mechanical errors
• Make clear that you’ve not only done the reading, but that you’ve spent some time thinking about the reading and its larger implications
• Make clear your own thoughts and beliefs about the reading (Note: use of first-person is appropriate for these assignments)

You should feel free to be creative with your reading responses. Here are three suggestions for approaching this assignment:

1. Write a listicle (e.g. Five things I learned from…”)
2. Reflect on how the reading connects to another media (a movie you saw, a podcast you heard) or how it connects to another reading we’ve done
3. Choose a quote that stands out to you and explain why it’s important

Preparing to Evaluate the Performance of Employees

Your task for this unit is to obtain a performance evaluation form for any employment position (recreation, tourism, sport, or event management positions). While it is possible to find this type of document on the Internet, it is usually considered an internal document for any company, business or organization. Therefore, it is likely that you’ll have to contact an organization specifically and share with a professional at that organization why you are requesting such a document. Many professionals (especially those in our field and settings) will be happy to share the information when they know you want it for a class assignment. You can contact a professional organization via phone or email to access a digital copy of an evaluation.

In a summary report you are to 1) provide a summary of the organization using the form, 2) critique the performance evaluation tool based upon the information provided in your text, class lecture, and the information shared with you from the professional profiles, and 3) a brief discussion of how you might utilize this form and the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. In your critique of the form, do not simply describe the instrument, but identify its strengths and weaknesses based upon what you have learned. This is your opportunity to think critically as well as apply course material to your performance evaluation form.

Security is an essential element in modern operating system design. An open and unprotected TCP/IP port can present a significant network operating system vulnerability. In the first portion of your post, you will investigate and describe the security status of your operating system. Using an available workstation, execute one of the following commands on your Windows, OS X, or Linux workstation to determine the status of its TCP ports.

• Windows: netstat -np tcp
• Linux: netstat -at
• OS X: netsat -p tcp

In the second portion of your post, explain what you found based upon what your operating system reports. For the third and final portion of your post, perform an internet search to determine what elements of SANS 20 you could leverage to reduce the TCP/IP vulnerabilities of your workstation. Report your findings to the class.

After your initial post, respond constructively to two of your peers’ posts. In one of your two response posts, do your best to find a student who selected the same operating system and compare/contrast the findings of their internet search of SANS 20 to your findings. In your other response post, do your best to find a student who selected a different operating system and ask at least one probing question in response to their SANS 20 findings in an attempt to gain more clarity on common issues with that operating system.
