Populations Affected by Mental Illness

Read chapter 24 of the class textbook and review PowerPoint presentation. Once done answer the following questions;

1. Explain and give some examples of the concepts of community mental health, and discuss the importance of community mental health promotion in special populations.

2. Describe the biological, social, and political factors associated with mental illness.

3. Describe different types of evidence-based treatment for mental disorders, including the use of psychotropic medication management, community case management, and crisis intervention. Give at least one example.

4. Describe the role of mental health nurses in the community.

1. Acute Infectious Thyroiditis: Having recovered from a respiratory infection, a patient later presented with the following symptoms:

2. Hemorrhagic Shock: A patient undergoes a seemingly successful, uncomplicated back surgery.

Approximately an hour after surgery, the patient complains about abdominal discomfort and it is noted that his abdomen is distended and that he is hypotensive and tachycardic.

It is discovered that he has significant bleeding into his abdominal cavity due to injury to the descending aorta.

3.Blood Sugar: Insulin works to bring elevated blood sugar back to homeostatic levels.

While insulin is the only hormone that brings down blood sugar levels, there are many hormones that work to raise blood sugar.

List the hormones that cause an increase in serum blood sugar and discuss the conditions under which they would be activated.
