A movement in management among entrepreneurs has resulted from the blending of two trends, co-working and “work-cations.†It’s difficult for entrepreneurs to completely disconnect from their businesses. They often carry all responsibilities for their companies, with either no support or the assistance of a small staff. Some like-minded entrepreneurs have opened businesses where entrepreneurs gather as a group in a vacation destination, such as Portugal and Morocco, to spend weeks or months coworking. Carlos Hernandez of Surf Office, one of the initial “work-cation†firms, stated, “A great benefit of spending two weeks with these guys is you really focus on a short deadline and concentrate on this one project. Mixing surf and socialization creates a better balance in working together and getting things done – not just with the product but the whole philosophy.†The initial goals were to avoid burn-out and to improve work-life balance by blending both. The actual outcomes appear to be better productivity, greater focus, and a more positive state-of-mind. What do you believe are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend? What are some of the companies offering this service? What are the costs and lengths of stay? Where would you choose to go for your co-working “work-cation?â€
Your task is to research the subject on line and gather possible data focusing on the business value of work-cations. Write a Yardstick Report: • Begin by describing the problem or need. • Explain possible solutions and alternatives. • Establish criteria for comparing the alternatives; tell how the criteria were selected or developed. • Discuss and evaluate each alternative in terms of the criteria. • Draw conclusions and make recommendations.
