working title for your chapter and a complete first draft of your chapter’s introduction. Your introduction should be about 1-1/2 to 2 pages, double spaced, and include properly formatted footnotes (following Chicago Manual of Style guidelines).
The basic elements of an introduction include:
- the hook: a quote, a description of an image, or a really brief story/vignette that grabs the reader’s attention
- a BRIEF summary of historical context or background
- a BRIEF overview of the existing scholarship related to your topic/question
- an explanation of your chapter’s significance. How does your research contribute to the scholarly conversation that you’ve just described?
- a description of exactly what you will do in this chapter (ie: I will explore my topic by answering the following questions and using the following types of evidence)
- a clearly articulated argument (the answer to your research question), introduced with an appropriate signal phrase, such as: “In this chapter I argue …†or “This chapter shows how …†or something similar. The argument (aka “thesis statement” in Turabian) generally appears in the last paragraph of the introduction.
