I. Flint: What was the role of the media and journalists in the Flint Water Crisis? How do you view Ron Fonger’s role as a policy actor? If you held preconceptions about what the media’s role in the policy process or as political actors “should†be, did this reinforce them or change your mind? What do you think the media’s impact was on the Flint Water Crisis?
II. ProPublica and Data Journalism: How has the role of data journalism changed the roles available to journalists and the media? Do you find this kind of reporting more or less convincing than other styles? Do you think it makes information more or less accessible? Why?
III. The Role of the Media Overall: Based on the Graber and Dunaway reading, the interview with Ron Fonger, the ProPublica Chicago article, and what you’re seeing in the world, what do you think about the role of the media in the policy process? Are there ways you see journalists and media outlets responding constructively/positively to the challenges facing them (see the slides from this week)? Are there ways you’d suggest the media could respond that they aren’t? How can the media adapt to continue to play its important role in the policy process? Are there policies the government could put in place to help?
