Completing courses in the absence of a physical classroom and frequent face-to-face contact can be challenging, even for those who are comfortable with technology and the online environment. You need to be able to plan and manage your time well, particularly since there is no structured “class time”; communicate clearly and effectively where there is no visual or nonverbal feedback; and use technology effectively.
This Discussion provides you with an opportunity to think about your skills in the above areas, to explore strategies for successful online learning, and exchange strategies with your colleagues.
To prepare:
Review this Week’s assigned readings from the Walden e-Guide and the document, “Technical Tips for Learning at Walden,” in the Learning Resources.
Review this week’s media program, “Tips for Effective Online Composition and Communication.”
Think about some strategies you have used, or read about, that may be beneficial for effective planning, time management, communication, and technology use.
Consider how the strategies you have identified can contribute to being a successful online learner.
Post a description of at least one strategy for each of the following areas related to online success: planning, time management, communication, and technology use.
Explain how/why you think use of each strategy will contribute to your success as an online learner.

/in Uncategorized /by developerluise Re: Topic 2 DQ 1 A clinical issue that is noticed is that some nurses lack the staff’s demands to efficiently and adequate deliver care to the patients and meet health care organization requirements. According to Stanton, “Greater numbers of nurses at the bedside help increase patient satisfaction, improve quality of care, and increase nurse morale, satisfaction, and retention” (Martin, 2015). Health care organizations expect that all the necessary documentation and tasks be completed while continuously adding more to the nurses’ workload without providing the required resources staff impacts the patient’s safety and the delivery of care. According to Stanton, “Hospital nurse staffing is of major concern because of the effects it can have on patient safety, and quality of care” (Martin, 2015). Nurses require more resources and appropriate staffing ratios to meet the needs of the patients and health care organizations. When nurses do not have adequate staffing, patient care is compromised, which leads to unsafe practices. With that being said, nurses need the help of health care staff members to meet the needs of the patient effectively. “For example, increasing nurse staffing does not mean changing RN duties to include housekeeping and transport. It does not mean eliminating ancillary staff; it simply means increasing the number of nurses caring for patients is adequate for the patient acuity (Stanton, 2004)” (Martin, 2015). Furthermore, nurses that work in an understaffed health care setting get burned out and resign from the organization due to the lack of resources and support. According to Garnett, “Not only have higher nurse-to-patient ratios been shown to increase nurse burnout, it can have serious effects on the health and well being of the nurse. An unrealistic workload may result in chronic fatigue, poor sleep patterns, absenteeism, and job dissatisfaction” (Martin, 2015). References Martin, C. J. (2015). /in Uncategorized /by developer Discussion: Pain
The neurological system affects all parts and functions of the body through nerve stimulation. Nerves also control the sensation and perception of pain. While pain can be described in a variety of ways, it is essentially labeled according to its duration and source. As an advanced practice nurse evaluating a patient, you need to consider the following questions: Does the pain quickly come and go, or is it persistent and ongoing? Does the pain arise at the source of injury or in another location? In this Discussion, you compare three common types of pain—acute, chronic, and referred.
To Prepare
Review this week’s media presentation on the neurological system, as well as Chapter 14 in the Huether and McCance text.
Identify the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain. Consider the similarities and differences between these three types of pain.
Select two of the following patient factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Reflect on how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.
Post a description of the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain, including similarities and differences between them. Then, explain how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

As many major medical companies and pharmacies face lawsuits and even bankruptcy in light of recent lawsuits, it is likely that nursing practice and evidence-based practices will change in an attempt to save lives and reduce opioid-related deaths. Working in a surgical center provides a unique nursing opportunity to address and change the opioid crisis, as many patients that begin abusing opioids begin their prescriptions either for chronic pain, or after injury or surgery (Demsey, Carr, Clarke, & Vipler, 2017). Two ways that we can expect nursing practice to be impacted by the change in addressing our nation’s opioid crisis include patient teaching, and tracking medication use and pain levels (American Journal of Nursing [AJN], 2015). Patient education regarding opioid medications include educating the patient on the risks of opioid diversion, and the proper storage and disposal of opioid medication prescriptions (AJN, 2015). Studies show that approximately one-quarter of medications are diverted from legal prescriptions, while 71% of those diverted opioids were obtained either from friends or family, either for free or by theft (AJN, 2015). Educating patients about these facts as well as the importance of proper safe-keeping of medications and how or where to safely dispose of opioid medications is an important first step in correcting the opioid crisis. Monitoring patient and tracking usage of opioids include patient teachings that focus on the correct usage, as well as appropriate indication and expectations (AJN, 2015). For example, patients after surgery should be educated that they will not be pain-free immediately following their procedure and that opioid prescription medications should not be used for any other indication other than pain, which includes induction of relaxation or sleep (AJN, 2015). It is also important to teach the patient about keeping a pain medication journal which includes the type of pain the patient is experiencing, the pain scale rating associated with the pain, as well as time and dosage of the medications taken, reviewing these journals with the patient can help the healthcare providers notice usage or patterns that could indicate a current or potential problem (AJN, 2015). Helping to identify issues before they become an actual problem are other interventions that the nurse provides to the patient that will aid in addressing and correcting the opioid crisis in the United States. /in Uncategorized /by developerDiscussion: Scholarly Writing and Plagiarism
As a nurse embarking on an advanced degree, you are developing the characteristics of a scholar-practitioner, which includes strong communication skills. Writing in a scholarly manner involves supporting your thoughts with evidence from the literature and appropriately using APA formatting.
One of the challenges of scholarly writing is paraphrasing the thoughts of others in your work. Paraphrasing, and correctly citing the original author for his or her ideas, allows you to take the ideas of others, summarize them, and incorporate them into your own writing.
When summarizing the ideas of others, it is important to avoid plagiarizing (copying the words and ideas of others as though they were your own). In addition to expanding your knowledge of APA, this week’s Learning Resources help you to distinguish between paraphrasing and plagiarizing.
To prepare:
Think about the sometimes subtle difference between plagiarizing and paraphrasing.
Read the following paragraphs, which were written by Patricia O’Conner:
A good writer is one you can read without breaking a sweat. If you want a workout, you don’t lift a book—you lift weights. Yet we’re brainwashed to believe that the more brilliant the writer, the tougher the going.
The truth is that the reader is always right. Chances are, if something you’re reading doesn’t make sense, it’s not your fault—it’s the writer’s. And if something you write doesn’t get your point across, it’s probably not the reader’s fault—it’s yours. Too many readers are intimidated and humbled by what they can’t understand, and in some cases that’s precisely the effect the writer is after. But confusion is not complexity; it’s just confusion. A venerable tradition, dating back to the ancient Greek orators, teaches that if you don’t know what you’re talking about, just ratchet up the level of difficulty and no one will ever know.
Don’t confuse simplicity, though, with simplemindedness. A good writer can express an extremely complicated idea clearly and make the job look effortless. But such simplicity is a difficult thing to achieve because to be clear in your writing you have to be clear in your thinking. This is why the simplest and clearest writing has the greatest power to delight, surprise, inform, and move the reader. You can’t have this kind of shared understanding if writer and reader are in an adversary relationship. (pp. 195–196)
Source: O’Conner, P. (2003). Woe is I: The grammarphobe’s guide to better English in plain English. New York: Riverhead Books.
Paraphrase this passage from O’Conner using no more than 75–100 words. Remember that paraphrasing means summarizing the essence of the original text. It does not mean creating a thesaurus-based revision of the author’s original words or copying the piece, or any part of it, word for word. For this activity, do not use any direct quotes.
Turn your paraphrase into Grammarly and SafeAssign.
Review your reports.
Review the other tools, resources, and services available to you through the Walden Writing Center that support your growth as a scholarly writer.
Consider which of these resources you find to be most useful.
Review learning resources on APA formatting rules and information within the Walden Writing Center on APA
Post a description of your experience of using Grammarly and SafeAssign and share at least one insight you gained about paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarism as a matter of academic integrity.
Recommend at least one other online resource that supports scholarly writing, and explain your rationale. Lastly, share two APA formatting rules with the class and a specific page number in the APA manual where this rule can be located
Support your Discussion assignment with specific resources used in its preparation using APA formatting. You are asked to provide a reference for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Because this topic has been brought to the forefront due to a recent crisis, once the initial public health hazard has been taken care of, the community may go back to being ignorant or not caring about the topic. One way in which I can battle this is to stress the fact that elevated blood lead levels are not an acute problem for the general public but instead they are a chronic problem. While the initial threat of elevated blood lead levels in children due to the public water change in Flint has passed, there are still may ways in which children can obtain lead. Pointing this out and stressing this in my education will hopefully allow me to continue an active interest within the community. Another barrier I can see would be a one-size-fits-all approach to my chosen topic. Evidence-based practice changes are scientific based and often people take a strict adherence to the guidelines set forth within these proposals (Surface, 2009). These guidelines may not always fit with the audience you are working with and should be a revolving set of guidelines based on research and evidence. Just like my topic – 25 years ago obtaining elevated blood lead levels from imported toys and food items was not a big problem but in today’s global economy it has become an area of concern.
