For the unit 3 assignment, there will be three tasks:

First you must create a logic circuit using only basic gates such as AND, OR, NOR, NAND, NOT, etc. to implement an ADDER capable of adding two 4 bit binary numbers.

Second you must create a logic circuit using only basic gates such as AND, OR, NOR, NAND, NOT, etc. to implement a Subtractor that is capable of subtracting the second number from the first, by converting the second number into its 2’s complement form and then adding the resulting number to the first number. You do not need to worry about accomodating the addition or subtraction of negative numbers as part of your assignment.

Finally, for the third part of the assignment you must create a limited ALU (Arithmetic logic unit) circuit using Logism that implements a Full Adder circuit capable of adding 2 – 4 bit binary numbers and subtracting 2- 4 bit binary numbers. You must also implement the ability to select a bitwise AND operation and a bitwise OR operation. For the ALU it is acceptable to use the Adder and Subtractor circuits that are listed under the “Arithmetic” folder in Logism. Please check the video lecture on Logism tips and tricks to learn how to use multi bit pins, and how to set up different gates to support more than 1 bit.

If you would like to use YOUR adder or subtractor circuit in your ALU that is not only acceptable but would be preferred (it is not required as it will make the circuit much more complex) in order to do this you should learn to make use of the splitter that is located in the “Wiring” folder in Logism as this can simpify wiring all of the functions together.

This assignment demonstrates many of the key elements that are required for an operational ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit). First of all we are providing two inputs or operands which will be used in a computation. We are implementing four of the most important computations including add, subtract, bitwise AND, and bitwise OR. Obviously this would not be a complete ALU, but it does provide us with an understanding of the operation of the ALU and gives us some experience with designing components of the ALU.

Your circuit must use a multiplexor that will select between the add, subtract, AND, and OR operations. The multiplexor will select the operations using 2 bits for the selection as follows:

0 0 – Add

0 1 – Subtract

1 0 – AND

1 1 – OR

What this means is that when the selection bits on the multiplexor (or demultiplexor as the case may be) are set it enbles the path from one of the functions Add, Subtract, AND, and OR.

Your subtract circuit must convert the second of your two input numbers into 2’s complement format and then add the resulting binary number to the first number as this will effectively subtract the second binary number from the first binary number. Remember to convert a number into 2’s complement requires two steps. First the bits of the number must be inverted (make all 1’s into 0’s and make all 0’s into 1’s) second add one to the this inverted number. You could use a circuit similar to the following for this.

The bitwise AND and OR functions can be implemented using a circuit similar to the following.

DO NOT attempt to use the examples that I have provided here. They are meant to be illustrative but are NOT necessarily complete.

Your circuit should look similar to the following diagram (again this is meant to be illustrative it is NOT complete) with the two binary numbers to be added on the left, a bit selector that will select the operation to be performed. When it is 0 the adder circuit should be selected and when 1 the subtraction circuit should be selected. Of the output of the computation should be on the right.

Your circuit should follow this basic format, but you must design all of the actual circuits to perform addition and subtraction. You must design the actual connections between components what I have represented below is just to give an idea of where you should put the inputs, outputs, and processing that occurs in between.

Complete and test your circuit using Logism and submit the following materials.

  1. Using the export image feature in Logism (Use File-Export Image from menu), export your circuits in jpeg format include it as part of your post. Moodle has the ability to insert a jpeg image.
  2. Save your Logism models as a circ files and attach the files to your assignment posting.

First Year Writing as Introduction to Writing Studies

Previously, first year writing courses were designed

to teach students how to write very specific texts (like psychology papers) with great emphasis on genre and format. Students would leave these kinds of courses well prepared to compose specific types of essays but very underprepared for many other kinds of writing situations they would face.

Douglas Downs and Elizabeth Wardle proposed seeing First Year Writing differently in their article linked here.

 (Links to an external site.)

Today, this approach has become very popular in University First Year Writing courses and it is the approach we will be using in this class. Instead of teaching you how to write well in a few very specific genres, we will instead explore writing as a discipline of study with principles, concepts and ideas that can be transferred and applied across a wide variety of writing situations.

Writing Across the Disciplines or Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)

 (Links to an external site.)

Links to an external site.

In this framework, writing studies courses are concerned about exploring the ways different disciplines use writing and how we can see writing as a tool to compose texts and find success in writing situations across a variety of disciplines and curriculums. This frameworks focuses on helping students see how different writers use writing in various ways in specific disciplines, such as Engineering, and often these kinds of writing studies experiences embed students into a specific discipline, offering collaboration between writers and disciplinary experts.

Social Constructivism

This framework is very important for our work in this course and suggests that writing only really functions properly and can only be understood properly if it is seen as a communal, social act. When we create texts and compositions, we do not create these things in isolation as a solo act. Instead, we create writing because we are constantly being influenced by those around us, our peers, our teachers and our anticipated audiences. Texts and compositions are created as social experiences and this dynamic greatly influences the ways in which these texts are made.

in this we have to post a response to that..??

1. Consult an almanac, newspaper, magazine, or the Internet to find data that appear to lie approximately on or near a straight line. A few of the many free sources of data that might be appropriate to use are:

http://data.worldbank.org/http://www.statcrunch.com/5.0/shareddata.php?keywords=DATAhttp://datacatalogs.org/http://data.gc.ca/eng

2. Create a scatterplot and a line fitting the data in one of two ways:

a. To do this activity by hand, create a scatterplot by plotting the (x, y) data in a Cartesian (rectangular) coordinate system. Then, draw a line that approximately fits the data in the scatterplot, and then write its equation as a function in slope-intercept form. An easier way, and one that produces better looking results, is to find the equation of the line for your data using this free, online linear regression calculator: http://www.alcula.com/calculators/statistics/linear-regression/.

b. To use the regression calculator:

  • Enter your data, but without parentheses (  ), in the empty data field at: http://www.alcula.com/calculators/statistics/linear-regression/. For example, for my first point, I would type 1,5 not the usual ordered pair format of (1, 5).
  •  When all of your data points are entered, click on the “Submit Data” button. The line of best fit y = mx + b for your data will be displayed, as will a figure showing a scatterplotof your data and the graph of your line of best fit
  • Right-click on the displayed figure of the scatterplot/graph and save it to your computer. Then, load it into the discussion box when you make your post. To do that, click on the image button in the palette of the discussion text-editor window. In that menu, you load the figure from your computer into your post.

3. Also include a link to your data, along with an explanation of what the x and y axes represent in your graph.

To gain full credit for your work, you must complete all the directions.

Five ideas in the technology literature stand out. The first is Woodward’s research into

manufacturing technology. Woodward went into organizations and collected practical data on technology characteristics, organizational structure, and management systems. She found clear relationships between technology and struc- ture in high-performing organizations. Her findings are so clear that managers can analyze their own organizations on the same dimensions of technology and struc- ture. In addition, technology and structure can be co-aligned with organizational strategy to meet changing needs and provide new competitive advantages.

The second important idea is that service technologies differ in a systematic way from manufacturing technologies. Service technologies are characterized by intan- gible outcomes and direct client involvement in the production process. Service firms do not have the fixed, machine-based technologies that appear in manufacturing organizations; hence, organizational design often differs as well. E-commerce and f-commerce organizations present new service challenges.

The third significant idea is Perrow’s framework applied to department technol- ogies. Understanding the variety and analyzability of a technology tells you about the management style, structure, and process that should characterize that depart- ment. Routine technologies are characterized by mechanistic structure and nonrou- tine technologies by organic structure. Applying the wrong management system to a department will result in dissatisfaction and reduced efficiency.

The fourth important idea is interdependence among departments. The extent to which departments depend on each other for materials, information, or other resources determines the amount of coordination required between them. As inter- dependence increases, demands on the organization for coordination increase. Organizational design must allow for the correct amount of communication and coordination to handle interdependence across departments.

The fifth important idea is that new flexible manufacturing systems are being adopted by organizations and affecting organizational design. For the most part, the impact is positive, with shifts toward more organic structures both on the shop floor and in the management hierarchy. These technologies replace routine jobs, give employees more autonomy, produce more challenging jobs, encourage teamwork, and let the organization be more flexible and responsive. The new technologies are enriching jobs to the point where organizations are happier places to work.

QUESTIONS:

1.HOW THESE IDEAS REFLECT IN THE ORGANIZATION OF AMAZON? Explain

2. Were organization design changes necessary to realize the advantages of the new technology?Explain, example
