First introduced in 1970 by Tony Buzan, the goal of a mind map is to identify the core idea and then organize related topics around it. Each subtopic can be broken down further into end nodes if desired. This process is thought to depict the way our brain naturally operates and can aid in the organization of ideas. For this week, you will develop a mind map identifying each stage of a project lifecycle. When developing your mind map, be sure to include several characteristics of each stage, and cite your references when appropriate. Nice start on the background slides. Be sure to include citations where you have borrowed information from outside sources. I recommend using different facts on these slides other than the year the work was made or the medium. You’ve already stated those facts on the artwork slide. 

There should be a citation where you have the definition of the contextual theory as this idea presumably comes straight from the textbook. A citation for the textbook looks like: (Frank, 2014)Please be sure to write the artwork titles in italics. 

Formal theory is not three parts. There are three separate schools of theories: formal, contextual and expressive. 

The formal theory slide needs more on how Kindred Spirits was influenced by earlier artists. How do you know this? Which earlier artists influence the work? I would review the definition of formal theory, which also looks at the formal (ie visual) aspects of the work.

The contextual theory needs more info on the culture influencing the work, and where you see that influence in the art. 

I think you could give more information about Van Gogh when looking at The Starry Night and using expressive theory to explain it. Remember, critics using this theory want to know ‘who made it and who is he or she?’ so it would be appropriate to look more at just who the artists are and use the information to find powerful personal meanings.

On every artwork slide, you should include the following information:

– title of artwork- artist- year created- medium (that is, oil painting? drawing? bronze sculpture? etc)- there should also be a citation at the bottom, in parentheses

On the references slide, there should be one reference citations for each artwork in your gallery. They each should lead with the artist’s last name and include the artwork date, title, medium and where you found the image.

Art Gallery: Commentary

For Unit VIII, the last segment of your art gallery course project, you will be adding a comprehensive statement to your PowerPoint presentation and finalizing your segments from the previous units. You will submit the entire presentation, including those portions from previous units, for a final grade.

Begin by reviewing your Unit VI feedback and making any necessary revisions. In your comprehensive statement, present the last words on your art gallery. Summarize your thoughts and convey the larger implications of your art gallery. This is an opportunity to succinctly answer the so what? question by placing the presentation within the context of research about the topic you have investigated. Be sure to demonstrate the importance of your ideas. Do not be shy. The comprehensive statement offers you a chance to elaborate on the significance of your findings.

For this segment, use the slides in the art gallery template labeled “Comprehensive Statement.” A minimum of three PowerPoint slides are required; however, you are welcome to add as many as you feel you need. You may include more than one idea on each slide, but please do not overload the slides with information.

Be sure to address the following in your comprehensive statement:

• Describe what you learned about art in general.
• Describe what you learned about the art criticism theory.
• Describe what you learned about art’s role in society.
• Citations and references are not a requirement for this section, but if you choose to use outside sources, they must be cited and referenced accordingly.

First, read Chapter Two, “The Auteur Theory,” from Signs and Meaning in the Cinema by Peter Wollen, found immediately below (or after) this assignment on the course “Home” web page. Take notes on the reading, so to fulfill the second and third parts of this question (immediately following). 

Second, define Auteur Theory. What role does it see as the director’s in the making of films? Why is it best applied to the analysis of an entire body of work rather than an individual film? 

Third, briefly summarize Wollen’s comparison and contrast of the heroes in the works of Howard Hawks and John Ford and their characterization of women. Consider this an application of the theory. 

Fourth, using this approach, view one film below and any other two additional ones by the same Director (for a total of three). While watching them, look for common themes and trademark (cinematic) techniques for the treatment (depiction, handling, etc.) of the material.
