Final Project

You should begin working on elements of the Final Project in Week One. Each week, there is a recommended learning activity associated with helping you complete the Final Project. There are ungraded and graded practice exercises, which will allow you to practice applying accounting skills learned in class to different scenarios. Download and open the Excel file BUS591 Final Project Template (Attached). Review the instructions presented on the Instructions Tab in the Workbook and the weekly recommended learning activity. If you complete each part as recommended, you will have the complete Final Project finished by Week Six. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 are ungraded practice problems, while Chapters 4 and 13 are graded problems. Take your time and complete all requirements. Also, if you complete the practice problems from Chapter 3, completing the graded portion from Chapter 4 will be much easier.

Do not work ahead unless you read the corresponding chapters. For example, read Chapters 3 and 4 before completing the Continuing Cookie Chronicle problems from those chapters.

Final Project

For this project, pretend you are an organizer for a charity in your local area. The charity can be a real or pretend charity.  You will be creating a Flyer advertising a fundraising event, a spreadsheet showing donations for 3 events given in each of 3 cities and creating a presentation in which you are telling an audience about your charity and the great work it does. Read below for more detail.

Flyer Instructions:

Using Microsoft Word, create a flyer.  Have a title centered at the top of the page in an appropriate size font.  Below the title, you will have an image related to charity or event that is centered.  There will then be a paragraph telling us about the charity event.  Below the paragraph, left aligned and each on their own line tell us the What, Where, and When.  Bold the words What, Where etc. Below that type the words Point of Contact and center it and below that create a one row by three column table. In the table, have a name, email and phone number of the point of contact.   Below the table have the words:   For More Information, Visit: then type in a real or imaginary web address. The flyer should be one page.

Some ideas for charity events could be a Bizarre, Fair, Bake Sale, Cake Walk, Carnival, Book Fair, Car Wash, Craft Fair, Pancake breakfast, Dinner….

Spreadsheet Instructions:

Using Microsoft Excel, create a spreadsheet that will have three cities of your choice and three fundraising events for each city in which money was raised.  Have the word Donations in bold and merged and centered above the spreadsheet.  Also bold the Cities and Events. Best fit columns headings as needed so they are visible.  The spreadsheet is to calculate the total donations for each city and event.  It will also total all donations and provide percent of total donation for each city.  Percent will be formatted with percent symbol and totals with $ symbol with no decimal places.  The sum function must be used for the totals and a formula used for percent of total donations for city.   Be sure to label columns and rows, so it is clear what is in your spreadsheet and bold all column and row headings. Include your lastname and GIDnumber as a comment in cell A2.

Presentation Instructions:

Using Microsoft PowerPoint, create a 5-8 slide presentation in which you tell us about the charity you are involved with.  There must be a title slide with a title and your name as the presenter. There also has to a concluding slide as the last slide in which you include contact information. On other slides include charity mission, benefits or accomplishments and where donations are spent.  Also create a table showing donations locally.  The presentation should include at least one image and have at least 1 slide with bullets points.  The presentation should have one design theme or a background that is the same for all slides.  There should be one slide transition that is used throughout the presentation.

For your submission, zip together the three files, the spreadsheet, the flyer, and the presentation, into a file entitled YourLastNameWeek8.zip.  Upload this file into the assignment area.

o  Icebreaker activity (something that engages the audience immediately);

o  Overview of the crime (prevalence rates, history, changes in laws over time, impact the crime has on the overall community);

o  Barriers for victims in reporting and seeking assistance;

o  Challenges for criminal justice professionals in responding to the crime, investigations, etc.;

o  Best practices for law enforcement and community response to these victims;

o  Any applicable requirements for first responders and law enforcement in the relevant jurisdiction;

o  Applicable victims’ rights and resources; and

o  Conclusion activities (something to close out the training and summarize the learning objectives).

Final Project Submission: Grant Proposal

Submit your final grant proposal. The final submission of the grant proposal should assemble all components and the milestones into a single document. It is expected that each milestone area will be revised in response to the feedback provided during the milestone submissions across the course.  

Grant agencies will return strong grant applications with suggested or required changes prior to approval, so this practice mimics the actual process. Submit these sections as one complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product.

From the instructor: I hope that you all have read over the Final Paper Guidelines and  Rubric. If you have, then you should have noticed that more details are  needed and you will not be just submitting all three Milestones  together. Please review all sections to see what areas you will need to  add more information for within the paper. It is important that you use  SUBTITLES to indicate where you have included the information and so  that you do not lose track. I have seen students leave out a whole  section and lose many points. I recommend printing out the Grading  Rubric and checking off each section of your document before  submitting.

Introduction

Investment guru Warren Buffet is one of the largest investors in The Coca Cola Company. He originally became interested in the soft drink company because he believed other investors were undervaluing the company. Mr. Buffet uses EVA as one of the primary tools to value companies. He believes that the true value of a company is determined by the ability of a company to earn cash returns in excess of the company’s cost of capital.

When Mr. Buffet analyzed Coke’s bottling companies he found a business that required very significant amounts of capital, the cost of which was barely being covered by the cash flows being generated by bottling operations – low EVA. The remaining elements of Coke’s business involved brand management, product development, licensing, and several related areas. These operations required modest amounts of capital, but produced huge amounts of free cash flow – high EVA. This EVA analysis suggested that Coke would likely demand a higher valuation without the bottling operations. Mr. Buffet convinced Coke to form a separate company, Coca Cola Enterprises, to force investors to make two separate evaluations. The result was dramatic. The market valued these two separate companies much differently than when they were combined. The Coca Cola Company without the bottling organization was worth more than with the bottling organization.

The objective of your Final Project is to identify a company that might be worth much more if it were broken into pieces and valued (using EVA) separately. The rationale for this difference can perhaps be explained by the difficult investors have valuing companies with multiple business units and/or accepting the insights of EVA analysis.

In addition to identifying a candidate for a breakup, your Final Project Report should include an EVA analysis of the combined company as well as the individual elements you recommend would be valued higher if they were separate. Also be sure to describe strategic advantages that could be gained from a breakup that are not rationalized only by EVA analysis. So, the rationale for your company selection should be based both strategic advantage and financial analysis.

Deliverables

The final report for your Final Project should not be less than 3,000 words and formatted in MS Word using a 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Your report should be idea-driven, but researched based, so be sure to include research citations in your final report as appropriate. In addition to a brief executive summary, your Final Report can have any number and type of sections.

Research assignment: Final Research Report

From the syllabus: The purpose of this assignment is to explore the gender relations of the everyday world of spaces where criminal justice or social control is administered. These worlds include women as criminalized bodies, women as professionals such as lawyers, police officers, or judges, as well as administrative staff such as court clerks. Also, this includes women’s as mothers, girlfriend’s, friends, or wives of criminalized men. 

The aim of the final research report is to use your field notes as data in discussing how gender is a part of the everyday regulating, disciplining, or managing women, and how gender intersects with class or race.

As you have chosen to use a shopping mall food court as your site to study gendered forms of social control, you need to conduct a thematic analysis of your field notes to determine how and when gender is managed, disciplined or policed in that space.

Here are the next steps for completing this assignment:

1.     Review your field notes and if you haven’t already done so document your analytical comments of how and when gender is being managed or disciplined, as well as resisted by the women themselves.

2.    Identify three key themes/findings in your data using this list as a guide. Tip: use a highlighter or coloured pen throughout field notes

·       presentation of self (how women dress or behave in the space you have studied (conformity, defiance, classed etc) 

·       social relations (between women, or women and men in this space)

·       gendered organization of work: intersections of race and class

·       social exclusion or marginalization (how women are marginalized or ignored)

·       agency or resistance (how do women assert their power or autonomy)

·       forms of surveillance (security personal, arrangement of space/seating, signs) 

·       personal technology: disciplines or manages space/time/interactions 

·       community life: how is the space used?.

3.    Presentation of findings: summarize each key theme using examples from the field notes. This should be about 2-3 pages (750 words), depending on how much data you have. This is very descriptive writing that relies on the data exclusively. Each theme should be identified as a subheading. The aim of your writing is to make the scenario fully understood by the reader.

4.    Discussion of findings: theorize or analyze your findings but connecting your data to some of the published research in the field.  To simplify this process, I have provided articles to be used. They are available through Google Scholar.

Components of final research paper and rubric (50 points)

1.     Introduction: purpose of paper, the themes to be discussed. This is not a thesis statement, rather it is a roadmap for the reader as to the contents of the paper. (200 words, 2 points)

2.    Research site: description of where the research took place. This should be a detailed description of the city, demographics (size, socio-economic indicators, diversity) as well as description of location and the research site itself (court room waiting area and court room). Feel free to include map inserts and drawings. Finally, who was observed (general characteristics – gender ethnicity age socioeconomic status). (250 words, 6 points)

3.    Findings: key themes presented using subtitles, with data from field notes to support and illustrate each theme. (750 words, 20 points)

4.    Discussion: Using the academic sources provided, you may choose to locate additional academic sources but this not required. Present a discussion as to how your data illustrates/confirms or challenges the published research. You are to focus on the theoretical arguments made by the authors of the article (these may not be explicitly gendered) and apply them to your gendered analysis of your data (500-750 words, 20 points)
