Ethics: A Personal Perspective

How we perceive ethical issues and how we expect others to act is in many respects a reflection of our personal views.  Considering the importance of our internal views of ethics, discuss what things come to mind when you think of the word “ethics”?  Do you think your views on ethics have evolved based on your life experiences or do you believe that your ethics DNA was established at birth. Why?

Drawing on your ethical compass as discussed above and using the assigned readings and viewing as a framework, how would you resolve the following ethical situation:

          You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are six people on one rock and five on the other.  Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?

 In your response be certain to identify what you believe is the ethical choice or dilemma that is presented, and discuss your reasons and possible alternative solutions to the one that you propose.  Is what you would actually do different from what you should do? If so, why?

 Learning Activity #2

Ethics: the meaning and importance of ethics

She asks that you give her your ideas and thoughts on this question in a conversation tomorrow.

How would you respond to your manager re:  this question?

#1

Gonzalez-Padron (2015) wrote,

Ethical dilemmas occur when a situation requires an individual to choose among alternatives that create a values conflict among stakeholders. In these situations, a conflict develops between the personal moral philosophy of the employees and the organization’s goals or culture. (Introduction, para. 4)

Organizations are always at risk for ethical dilemmas of some kind. Without revealing names of specific individuals, explain how an organization similar to the one you currently work in, or an organization that you may be aware of, is at risk for ethical dilemmas.  Why is this?  What other fields are at risk?

#2

From a managerial ethics perspective and considering some of the areas that were brought up in Week Two, Discussion 1, consider the following statement by Hagel (2015):

The demand for greater transparency from consumers and stakeholders across the world has pushed the areas of ethics and compliance up the corporate list of priorities in recent years. In addition, the risk to reputation and potential damage that can be done if evidence of unethical practice is discovered have increased significantly with the advent of social media.(para. 2)

In addition, consider the legislation that was brought up in Chapter 4 of the textbook.

Your organization (you can represent any organization, McDonalds, Starbucks, ESPN, etc.) has asked you to create a training presentation on ethics and compliance to be presented next week. Referencing the Hagel article, the Gonzales-Padron textbook, and at least two other journal articles, present an outline for your training as a response to this thread.

Ethical Principles and Dilemmas

What situations do psychologists find to be ethically challenging or troubling? The purpose of the study described in “Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Members of the American Psychological Association” (Pope & Vetter, 1992) was to have a representative sample of then-current APA members describe incidents that they found ethically challenging or troubling. These were collected to be used in possible revisions of the current APA’s Ethics Code. Participants in the study were asked to describe an incident that they or a colleague faced in the past year or two that was ethically challenging or troubling. Some of the incidents described also detail the psychologist’s response to the particular dilemma.

For this Discussion, you will consider whether you agree with the action taken by the psychologist and support your stance using the current version of the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct.

To prepare:

Read APA’s “Ethical principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct” and “Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Members of the American Psychological Associations” which discuss real scenarios of ethical dilemmas. Then, think about two of the scenarios discussed in the article.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 your answer to the following: Choose two ethical dilemmas in the article and the actions taken in response to it. First, choose one wherein you agree with the actions taken by the psychologist. Why do you agree with those actions? Use the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct to support your response. Next, choose an ethical dilemma wherein you disagree with the actions taken by the psychologist. Why do you disagree with those actions? Use the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct to support your response.

Ethical Paper!!!

Hi, I need a 2000 word paper as following:

The overall topic is „It is unethical to discriminate based on a persons physical appearance when hiring in the workplace”.

Evaluate the topic  from the perspective of two normative ethical theories (like it is explained below) and justify why they are relevant for the topic.

Explanation to the two normative ethical theories:

Choose ethical theories that you consider relevant and justify why they are relevant for the topic.

(Theories you can use:

Egoism Theory- Adam Smith;

Utilitarianism Theory-Jeremy Bentham/John Stuart Mill;

Ethics of duties Theory- Immanuel Kant;

Right & Justice Theory- John Locke/John Rawls)

Make sure the theories work to support the next section. Refer back to what you wrote in section 1 to support what you write in section 2,3 etc. Use references to Kant, Bentham, Hobbs, Rawls, Gilligan Nussbaum etc. whoever you think will help provide a USEFUL APPLICATION to support what you are writing. Show evidence of looking into the theoretical concepts beyond just the basics!!!

Frame the issues as questions: Is it right to discriminate based on a persons physical appearance when hiring in the workplace? Why not? Then answer the question from the perspective of all that went before. Present your answer from the „big“ perspective – the resultant likely impact on business and society and the world.

Articulate your own reflections on the ethical issues associated with the topic after considering from key stakeholder perspectives. Present a valid argument to support your viewpoint using current business issues to support your views. Be sure to provide references to support your views and to help produce a logical argument.

A conclusion that draws from points above to identify the key ethical considerations and implications presented by the topic for business and society.

Suggested Report Format:

Introduction: max. 200 words

Evaluation from normative theoretical perspective: 650 words

A valid argument developed through reflection from KEY stakeholder impact (reference to current business issue!!!!): 750 words

Conclusion: Considerations & implications presented by the topic for business and society (400 words)

List of References: formatted in accordance with guidelines on Harvard Style.
