Ethics and Evidence-Based Research

Write a 1250-1500 word essay addressing each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. There should be three main sections, one for each bullet below. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least two (2) sources using citations in your essay. Make sure to cite using the APA writing style for the essay. Part 1: Describe why ethical safeguards designed for clinical research may not be feasible or appropriate for evidence-based practice or evidence-based practice implementation projects.

Part 2:  Review the sectioned headed, Two Ethical Exemplars in Chapter 22 of the textbook (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2015, pages 518-519). Discuss three main ethical controversies related to implementing Evidence-Based Quality Improvement (EBQI) Initiatives. Describe how these controversies relate to the four core ethical principles.

Part 3: Identify which ethical principles may be in conflict with the concept of “patients having an ethical responsibility in improving healthcare.” Discuss how these conflicts may be resolved.

As referenced in Week 2, Discussion 2, nurses are perceived as having very high ethical standards (Gallup, 2013). Doctorally prepared nurses should be able to consider ethical issues from multiple viewpoints. In this week’s media presentation, the experts discuss ethical challenges encountered by nurses as they assume leadership positions and as they engage in research.

• Reflect on ethical challenges that you have encountered in your nursing practice.

Ethical dilemmas occur when a situation requires an individual to choose among alternatives that create a values conflict among stakeholders. In these situations, a conflict develops between the personal moral philosophy of the employees and the organization’s goals or culture. (Introduction, para. 4)

Organizations are always at risk for ethical dilemmas of some kind. Without revealing names of specific individuals, explain how an organization similar to the one you currently work in, or an organization that you may be aware of, is at risk for ethical dilemmas.  Why is this?  What other fields are at risk?

From a managerial ethics perspective and considering some of the areas that were brought up in Week Two, Discussion 1, consider the following statement by Hagel (2015):

The demand for greater transparency from consumers and stakeholders across the world has pushed the areas of ethics and compliance up the corporate list of priorities in recent years. In addition, the risk to reputation and potential damage that can be done if evidence of unethical practice is discovered have increased significantly with the advent of social media.(para. 2)

Ethical Principles and Dilemmas

What situations do psychologists find to be ethically challenging or troubling? The purpose of the study described in “Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Members of the American Psychological Association” (Pope & Vetter, 1992) was to have a representative sample of then-current APA members describe incidents that they found ethically challenging or troubling. These were collected to be used in possible revisions of the current APA’s Ethics Code. Participants in the study were asked to describe an incident that they or a colleague faced in the past year or two that was ethically challenging or troubling. Some of the incidents described also detail the psychologist’s response to the particular dilemma.

For this Discussion, you will consider whether you agree with the action taken by the psychologist and support your stance using the current version of the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct.

To prepare:

Read APA’s “Ethical principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct” and “Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Members of the American Psychological Associations” which discuss real scenarios of ethical dilemmas. Then, think about two of the scenarios discussed in the article.
