Ethical Interview: Each student will engage in and write-up an ethical interview. For this assignment, each student will identify someone that the student feels possesses “ethical wisdom”. The student will arrange to interview this person about what it means to be ethical, live a good life or how the interviewee thinks about his/her/their moral code, or similar. Then the student will engage the interviewee in a “debate” about these issues – not necessarily in an aggressive or overly challenging way, I am just looking for active, not passive engagement. The student will then write a report that (1) summarizes the questions the student asked, (2) articulates the interviewee’s perspective/point of view and (3) compares/contrasts the interviewee’s perspective with the student’s perspective.

Ethics is as old as civilization. The leaders of the earliest civilizations were lawgivers who codified ethics into systems of justice for the people who looked to them for leadership. From the very beginning of ethical discussion there has been an implied connection with the role of leadership.

Ancient ethics was involved with religion through the writings of saintly men, and that tie has never been entirely broken. To this day, the subject of ethics remains part of theological education and involves religious leaders with the issues of the day.

Conscience is a universal phenomenon that connects people beyond themselves to ethical expectations of unknown and uncertain source. While highly individualistic and self-condemning in action, the phenomenon of conscience crosses all boundaries of religion and culture.
