                                      Health Literacy Improvement

Health Literacy is an important aspect of Nursing Informatics, it’s how patients process and understand health information. When patients lack health literacy they do not understand their diagnosis and the treatment plans that the doctor makes for them. The big issue is making health literacy improvement plans for all clinics and hospitals, so that patients are better able to self-advocate in their health. We must be able to implement plans to explain in layman’s terms the instructions provided to the patient so that we can keep them from relapsing in health. Several studies were done where they implemented different strategies in clinical settings in order to improve health literacy between patients and medical staff.

Some of the methods used in the study was a mobile health app that helped the patients keep tract of their diabetes, as well as helped them keep up with their medications. This study was very important because it provided explanation and organization for the patients. The point of health literacy is to provide the patients with enough knowledge and understanding so self-sufficiency can occur and the chances of relapse decreases. During this study patients were found to be more compliant with their medications after they were able to comprehend the information given by the provider. The mobile app allowed them to track their blood glucose level efficiently and let them know when medication was needed.

The results of this study proved that people do not tend to be noncompliant from the beginning. People tend to fear asking too many questions and looking dumb or sometimes they do not understand enough to know what questions to ask. When given the right resources, that can explain their health in simpler or easier to manage ways then people are more willing to care for themselves.

Another process that should be done is proper training for doctors and nurses on how to simplify information for patients. Many times, the medical staff forget that the patients never had the training they received, so information needs to be simplified for all in the general population. Patients do not understand the consequences of their diagnosis most time, it is hard for them to know that if they do not take good care of their diabetes they will eventually lose toes or develop secondary diseases. As healthcare providers, we must have the sensitivity to every individuals’ situation and make sure we set up all our patients for success in the being of their treatment.

                                     Affordable Health Care Costs

One of the most pressing issues in health care is how to develop policies that make the cost of health care affordable to the citizens. The major issues when devising health care costs is the quality of health care, make health care accessible to more people, and ensure that the health providers receive benefits from their professional commitment. The logistics, in this case, is how to coordinate the different players in the health care system. These players include health care providers, insurance, and the government. Thus, health care providers have to develop mechanisms that ensure that they provide an affordable health care program that is cost-effective. The main approach that health care providers should ensure that they develop internal control systems that minimize costs (Hussey & Kennedy, 2016). For instance, they can hire young nurses who require lower wage rates in order to reduce the overall labor costs that are inadvertently passed over to the patients (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). In addition, to ensure that they minimize costs for the citizens they can minimize repetitive procedures that end up incurring unnecessary costs on the patients. Further, the adaption of technology can help in the data management of the population to provide health-related services and to provide preventive mechanisms to ailments.

The health insurance providers, on the other hand, have to be involved in the development of healthcare policies such as Medicaid and other policies that have been developed in the past. The development of these policies should be geared to improve the medical welfare of the citizens rather than the capitalistic approach of profit maximization. This concept should accommodate as many as all to ensure that every working-class individual has access to the health care covers (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). The significance of health care covers is to ensure that health care programs are affordable to a large population. In addition, it is aimed to minimize the immediate cost burden that the patients may find too huge to settle within a given time period.

The government acting as the health care regulator should ensure that health care products are available, as well as a sufficient health care workforce. To facilitate this, the government has to increase its health care spending and financing. To help the nursing informatics to develop new solutions and to be effective in health care delivery, the government can train the different health workers in nursing and health care fields at subsidized costs (Berg & Dickow, 2014). Further, it can subsidize the costs of health care products such as medicine to ensure that they are available.

In conclusion, the health care system can achieve affordable health care to all citizens by using a multi-faceted approach that includes all partners. Also, the issue of cost minimization while optimizing on results is key to achieving the desired ends of economics and strategy in health care. The significance of dealing with affordable health care in nursing informatics is to ensure that citizens have access to quality health care.

Discussion Professional Nursing And State Level Regulation

Board of nursing (bon) exist in all 50 states, the district of columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the northern mariana island, and the virgin islands. Similar entities may also exist for different region. The mission of BON is the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice. Bons put into practice state/region regulation for nurses that, among other things, lay out the requirements for licensure and define the scope of nursing practice in that state/region.

It can be a valuable exercise to compare regulations among various state/regional boards of nursing. Doing so can help share insights that could be useful should there be future changes in a state/region. In addition, nurses may find the need to be licensed in multiple states or regions.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the mission of state/regional boards of nursing as the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice.
  • Consider how key regulations may impact nursing practice.
  • Review key regulations for nursing practice of your state’s/region’s board of nursing and those of at least one other state/region and select at least two APRN regulations to focus on for this Discussion..

Post a comparison of at least two APRN board of nursing regulations in your state/region with those of at least one other state/region. Describe how they may differ. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how the regulations you selected may apply to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) who have legal authority to practice within the full scope of their education and experience. Provide at least one example of how APRNs may adhere to the two regulations you selected.

Discussion Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

Week 5: Strategic Planning

“For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” –African proverb

As this course has emphasized, healthcare leaders and managers typically have oversight of a vast array of responsibilities and outcomes. Like a general of an army or a physician helping a patient through a long-term disease, they must demonstrate that they can make critical day-to-day decisions, but they must also have a vision for a better future for those they serve. In healthcare management, that vision can best be achieved through planning involving a strategic process and group of stakeholders.

Healthcare leaders need to know how to ensure that their organizations succeed for the long term, and to anticipate market forces and policy and funding changes, among other challenges. In strategic planning, the process is as important as the plan itself.

This week, you will explore various aspects of strategic planning. You will examine challenges related to strategic planning in healthcare settings, the roles of stakeholders and healthcare leaders in the process, and components and goals of successful strategic plans.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Analyze stakeholder roles in meeting strategic planning challenges
  • Analyze the role of healthcare leaders and managers in meeting the needs of stakeholders and the goals of the organization through strategic planning
  • Identify the components and goals of a successful strategic plan
  • Compare goals and strategies of strategic plans
  • Analyze barriers to successful strategic planning implementation

Discussion Preventing Discrimination In The Workplace Paper

Discussion: Preventing Discrimination in the Workplace

Consider your rights as an employee or job applicant. What do you know about the laws that prevent unfair treatment and discriminatory practices in the workplace?

Prior to 1964, employees and job applicants had few rights. Many employers used skin color, religion, or gender as a sole basis to hire or fire employees. Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act aimed to protect employees from the prejudices of employers. In fact, after its passing it became the core foundation of workplace discrimination law because it protected five categories, or “classes,” of citizens from unfair employment practices. As time progressed, legislators supplemented Title VII with more anti-discrimination acts and policies. Today, employees or applicants who feel discriminated against due to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy, veteran status, or genetics can seek grounds for legal representation.

As a leader in the nursing field, you must take all necessary precautions to ensure that you and your unit, department, and/or organization adhere to the laws outlined and associated with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

To prepare

· Review Chapter 3, “The Legal Environment and Diversity Management,” in the course text, Human Resource Management: Functions, Applications, & Skill Development. Examine how Title VII protects classes of employees across all organizations and professions.

· Review this week’s media, “Legal Issues,” and the laws that address employment discrimination.

· Conduct research to learn more about applicable laws and regulations pertaining to the protected class assigned by your Instructor.

·

· Select one of the following options:

o Option 1: Conduct research via the Walden Library and other scholarly sites (such as the ones listed below) to locate an authentic discrimination case involving the protected class that you were assigned.

o

o Option 2: Recall an instance of discrimination you have personally experienced or witnessed related to your assigned protected class. Consider the events leading up to and the resolution of this instance.

Note: The case/instance that you choose for this Discussion may be from an organization in any field (not just health care) and must have occurred within the last 10 years.

· Once you have selected your option and case/instance, reflect upon the following questions:

o What legal issues (i.e., Title VII and other applicable laws) were relevant to this case or instance?

o What strategies would you propose to prevent a similar situation from occurring in your unit, department, or organization?

Discussion: Quality and Safety

A patient is prescribed an antibiotic for an illness caused by a virus. The patient is allergic to this antibiotic and has a severe adverse reaction that is life-threatening. If you were a leader or manager in the hospital in which this occurred, would you understand what aspects of quality and safety were at issue here? Would you be able to identify this as a problem of overuse, underuse, or misuse? What would your responsibilities be in this situation?

This is just one example of a scenario related to safety in a healthcare setting. Errors in quality and safety happen every day in healthcare organizations. Quality and safety remain critical issues for healthcare leaders and managers as well as patients and other stakeholders today. Because healthcare leaders and managers hold matters of life and death in their hands, it is imperative that they be vigilant in matters of quality and safety, and understand that quality might be perceived differently depending on who you ask. Therefore, it is important that healthcare leaders consider the perspectives of stakeholders.

To prepare for this discussion:

  • Carefully review your Learning Resources. View the two media pieces: Incident in the ER: Part I and Incident in the ER: Part 2. Consider how both healthcare managers handled the incident in both situations. What did the two individuals do wrong? What did they do right to ensure better quality and safety in the future?
  • Select one of the two case studies provided to discuss: “Trouble with the Pharmacy—Case for Chapter 7,” or “On Being Transparent.”
  • Seek additional resources to support your Discussion from one of these website resources on healthcare quality:
    • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/
    • Institute for Healthcare Improvement http://www.ihi.org/ihi
    • The Joint Commission http://www.jointcommission.org/
By Day 4

Post a comprehensive response to the following:

  • Describe how issues of quality of care and safety might be viewed from the perspective of each of the following:
    • A patient
    • A healthcare provider
    • A healthcare leader or manager
  • Describe the similarities between these perspectives.
  • Describe the differences between these perspectives.
  • Explain the role of a healthcare leader or manager in addressing quality and safety challenges in the case study you chose. Then, provide a specific example of a strategy that might help ensure future quality and safety by protecting patients from quality and safety errors.

Discussion Quality And Cost Measurements

As nurse practitioners continue to expand their role in delivering health care, it is imperative for NPs to provide the data and evidence to demonstrate the impact of NP care on patient outcomes. There are several challenges that advanced practice nurses face to provide quality care and meet productivity goals of an organization. This week it is important to explore the connection of quality care and performance measures. Some questions to consider as we discuss this topic are:

Why are quality measures important?

What is the difference between quality measures and performance indicators?

What performance measures are used for NP productivity?

Why are incentive plans used in clinical organizations?

To prepare:

Read the article, An Incentive Plan for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: Impact on Provider and Organizational Outcomes, by Catherine A. Rhodes, Mavis Bechtle, and Molly McNett (2015)

Explore quality measures and identify at least one clinical performance measure, such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

By Day 3

Post an explanation of the importance of quality measures using the clinical performance measure you identified as an example. Then, identify the performance measures used for NP productivity in Rhodes, Bechtle, and McNett (2015) article. Finally, share your opinion on incentive payment for care, including external motivators and at least one business model.

Discussion Psychological Aspects Of Aging 19476619

Theories of successful aging explain factors that support individuals as they grow old, contributing to their ability to function. Increasing your understanding of factors that support successful aging improves your ability to address the needs of elderly clients and their families.

To prepare for this Discussion, review this week’s media. In addition, select a theory of successful aging to apply to Sara’s case.

Parker Family Episode 2 Program Transcript PARKER: Ever since my husband died, there’s been no one to talk to. It’s just, really, no one. And when Stephanie is home, I just feel so alone. FEMALE SPEAKER: What about the day center you go to? Isn’t that helping? PARKER: I don’t like it. What makes me really feel good, though, is when I go shopping, buying things. And my kittens. I love my cats. Oh, have you seen them? I have pictures. Just take a look. Look! These are so cute. My babies. FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes, they’re very cute. And wow, you have a lot of them.  PARKER: Oh, well, it’s their home, too, not just Princess Stephanie’s.  FEMALE SPEAKER: The day program you’re attending, are you seeing a  psychiatrist there?  PARKER: Yes. Dr. Lewin.  FEMALE SPEAKER: May I ask how that’s going?  PARKER: He says that I’m depressed.  FEMALE SPEAKER: In the pictures you showed me, you just talked about the  cats, but I also saw all the things you keep around you, the hoarding. I understand how depressed you been since your husband passed away. How alone you’ve felt. [SIGH] But I would like us to try and set up a plan to begin to address the hoarding. It’s very clear that that’s one of the big issues that’s affecting your relationship with Stephanie and your life together. Can we try that? PARKER: I don’t like it when we fight. She’s still my baby, too. Yes, I want to try.

Discussion Providerpatient Confidentiality With School Age Children And Adolescents

When treating pediatric patients in clinical settings, you also treat patients’ families. With younger patients, this tends to be a seamless process. However, as patients age and grow into the adolescent years, the provider-patient-family relationship becomes more complex. The change in this dynamic often creates questions in provider-patient confidentiality. As the advanced practice nurse providing care for school-age children, adolescents, and their families, how do you handle these confidentiality issues? If a child is a minor, do you have to maintain provider-patient confidentiality? When is it appropriate to allow patients privacy? When is it your legal and ethical duty to involve family members? How do you facilitate the care of a minor when you have to work with parents and still maintain patient trust?

Consider the following three case studies.

Case Study 1

You receive a phone call from a mother who is concerned that her son is using drugs. The 16-year-old boy is seeing you in the afternoon for a follow-up for acne. The mother requests that you obtain a drug test during the visit, but she does not want her son to know he is being screened or that she requested screening because “I don’t want him to stop trusting me.”

Case Study 2

A 17-year-old girl comes to your office with a complaint of abdominal pain and missed periods. She thinks she may be pregnant. She requests pregnancy testing and does not want you to tell her parents if she is pregnant.

Case Study 3

The father of a 10-year-old boy calls your office to request assistance with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) for his son who was recently diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He wants you to contact the school and to facilitate getting an IEP developed.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s media presentation, as well as “Developmental Management of School-Age Children” and “Developmental Management of Adolescents” in the Burns et al. text and the Schapiro article in the Learning Resources.
  • Think about confidentiality laws regarding providers, school-age children, adolescents, and their families.
  • Select one of the three provided scenarios. Reflect on the provider’s role and responsibility regarding confidentiality between the patient and the patient’s family in the scenario.
  • Consider the appropriate way for the provider to respond and facilitate the care of the patient in the scenario you selected. Think about interventions and strategies that the provider should use to address the issues presented.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of the provider’s role and responsibility regarding confidentiality between the patient and the patient’s family in the scenario you selected. Explain how the provider should appropriately respond and facilitate the care of the patient in the scenario. Include interventions and management strategies that the provider should use to address the issues presented.
