The mother also informs the nurse that their family has a history of anemia. With the family history of anemia, it appears that this is the likely diagnosis. The same holds true when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process much more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.

As emphasized in this week’s media presentation, all nurses need to be familiar with the laws and regulations that govern their practice: their state’s Nurse Practice Act, ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, specialty group standards of practice, etc. In addition, basic ethical principles guide nurses’ decision-making process every day. ANA’s Code of Ethics and ANA’s Social Policy Statement are two important documents that outline nurses’ ethical responsibilities to their patients, themselves, and their profession. This said, there is a dilemma: The laws are not always compatible with the ethical positions nurses sometimes take. This week’s Discussion focuses on such a dilemma.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) obtain their licenses through independence in healthcare sectors for nurses with specialist in provision of healthcare services. The main role of Nurse Practitioners are obtaining assessment, diagnosing, treatment and management of acute and chronic illness. Besides, they are tasked with responsibility of giving orders, conducting, supervising and interpretation of laboratory tests (Kellams & Maye, 2017). In general, Nurse practitioners are usually experts in health promotion and prevention of diseases. For the case of a Nurse practitioner who is licensed, they have roles in coordinating activities of health care with other health care professionals. When licensed, they provide services as researchers, advocates to patients and a team of consultants. However, responsibility of Nurse Practitioners are involved in healthcare provisions for families, groups or even relatives.
Expectations of a nurse in giving health services calls for accountability in all duties they undertake. In accountability, it is the role of nurses to deal with code of conduct, issuance of certificates at national levels, reviews on work progress among colleagues and evaluation of outcome from nurses as a profession.
NP role is giving commitment to work and meet patients as they enter to healthcare centers. Nurses have mandate of showing and practicing healthcare science to all patients. Nurse Practitioners are responsible for all healthcare issues pertaining patients while at healthcare centers. Nurses take responsibilities and are involved at local national and international levels while making decision pertaining service provision to different stakeholders. Moreover, nurses provide professional assessment for collogues in development of their professionalism and actively participate in activities related to medication. According to Kellams and Maye, (2017), it is clear that Nurse Practitioners have been providing quality healthcare services.

APRNs are licensed registered nurses who have earned a graduate degree at the master’s or doctorate level and achieved national advanced practice certification for their specific practice area. The APRN designation includes Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, Psychiatric Certified Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Florida law requires APRNs to practice within a collaboration protocol with a physician or dentist.

There is no minimum amount of time the physician must be present in the clinic, they must simply alert patients if the supervising MD is off site. Rules for specialty clinics are even stricter in Florida. Physicians in specialty practice may supervise nurse practitioners at only one location in addition to their primary practice and these clinics must be no more than 75 miles apart. APRNs are proven to provide effective and high-quality patient care. A review of studies published over the past 18 years demonstrate comparable performance between nurse practitioners and primary care physicians on clinical outcomes, including reduction of symptoms and overall health improvement. Patients seen by nurse practitioners also report higher rates of satisfaction. In addition, APRNs are more readily recruited to states that authorize full practice. Full scope of practice regulation is associated with a higher supply of nurse practitioners in rural areas and counties facing health-professional shortages. (Practitioners, 2015)
