The paper must following the formatting guidelines in The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010), (6th ed., 7th printing), and contain scholarly references. In addition, the paper will be submitted through the Turnitin originality-checking tool.

Assignment 5 – Visual Veracity: The Truth in Photography (20pts, 20% of final grade)

Purpose

Photography has always been directly tied to ideas of ‘truth’ because of its ability to create impressions of things we experience in the world around us. Many photographic purists consider factual representation to be inherent to the medium, where as others feel the truth of Photography depends more on the intentions of the photographer and the context in which it’s placed. For this assignment, you will make images that support your particular version of a ‘truth’. This ‘truth’ could be about something in your life (“I am an excellent student”), apply more broadly to societal issues (“Philadelphia is racially divided”), or be totally fantastical (“Cats are taking over the world”). The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider how your use of Photography affects the meaning of the subject matter you photograph, and how that meaning can be manipulated to communicate an idea to others.

The final paper will be your opportunity to present a plan and objectives for providing logistic support to a fictional disaster situation. Although every situation encountered has its own unique requirements in order to successfully support the operation, there are basic actions taken pre-, intra- and post that should be followed. Incorporate what you have learned in policy, practice and possibly personal experience and develop an operational (tactical) plan- focused on logistics support- to ensure that disaster operations go smoothly. The goal of your paper should not to create the “perfect solution”; more it should be an examination/analysis of the situation at hand, and your role as a disaster logistician to assist the Incident Commander in supporting emergency operations.

The final paper is due no later than Friday of Week 14 so that we have ample time to grade them before grades are due (which is one weekend after the course ends). Choose one of the 3 scenarios listed below and write a 3000-word paper (plus or minus 10%) that briefly describes the incident.

Government leaders and health officials are contemplating community containment. Discuss how you, as the logistic chief, would supply and support emergency operations, what agencies would you seek support from, and establish points of distribution.
