Interview With A Nurse Information Expert

Purpose:

· communicate your understanding of the importance of quality information in everyday nursing practice;

· discuss the roles and responsibilities of a nursing information expert; and

· articulate how the professional nurse uses information and data in everyday practice to improve outcomes.

Directions

1. Download the required Interview form. See attached, fill out answers directly on attachment.

2. Select your interviewee and schedule an interview. This individual must be a Registered Nurse. Job titles of RNs who may be considered include, but are not limited to, nursing clinical information manager, super user, director/manager clinical education, chief information officer, quality assurance or performance improvement nurse, nurse informaticist, telenursing specialist, nurse abstractor, case manager, or compliance nurse. If you have any concerns about whether the RN is suitable for this assignment, contact your instructor before you schedule the interview.

3. Review all questions (areas of inquiry) on the Interview Form prior to conducting the interview. You may print the form and take it with you to the interview.

4. Note that there are five required questions to ask the RN.

5. Note that there are four optional questions. You need to select only one of these to ask the RN.

6. Note that there are two follow-up questions you must answer.

7. Prior to conducting your interview, review two scholarly resources. These resources should guide your understanding of the RN’s role and responsibilities or make you more knowledgeable about GIGO, interprofessional communication, or other key concepts in the questions that you may not fully understand. For example, if your interviewee is a telenurse, you would want to review information on this specialty. If you do not know what GIGO means, look it up.

8. Answers must be written in 3rd person, and using APA format.

Introduction To Evidence Based Practice

Purpose

This week’s graded topics relate to the following Course Outcomes (COs).

  • CO 3: Identify ethical issues common to research involving human subjects. (PO 6)
  • CO 5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (PO 7 & 8)

Discussion

We begin our journey into discovering the new world of research and evidence-based practice (EBP) by exploring our past. After completing the required readings and lesson, answer the following:

  • Explain how research has evolved since the Florence Nightingale era.
  • Discuss how research and EBP are different; include how you believe research supports EBP for nursing.
  • Describe one past/historical unethical breach of research conduct; then, share how you would ensure care of a study participant using one ethical or legal research consideration (guideline/principle)

Hello Class,
Why should nurses incorporate research? How could it (or does it?) impact your nursing practice?  Think about these questions as you complete the assigned readings this week.  Our profession was founded by Florence Nightingale, who was not just our nursing pioneer, but a researcher, too. In the last few years, we have seen many trends pushing nurses to have a professional practice based on evidence.  With that as our beginning, consider our week’s discussion:

1. How has research evolved since Florence Nightingale?

2. How are research and EBP different and how does research support EBP?

3.  Unfortunately, despite the positive impact research and EBP has, there have been major cases of research misconduct.  Please choose one historical case and how you would engage in ethical treatment of a research participant.

Professor’s comment: This week, we will meet the following course outcomes:

  • Identify ethical issues common to research involving human subjects.
  • Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice.

You may begin posting in this thread no sooner than the first Sunday of week one. Posts prior to this time will not receive credit. I look forward to your thoughts!   Dr. Smailes

Introduction To Ethics 19308537

The following case for discussion is from the eText, chapter 18, page 297:

Steven and Marisol are a young married couple who are concerned about passing genetic diseases to their children.  Members of Steven’s family have been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, an incurable genetic disorder that causes cognitive problems, difficulties with movement that ultimately require full-time nursing care, and reduced life expectancy.  Members of Marisol’s family have tested positive for a mutation of the BRCA genes that are strongly associated with breast and ovarian cancer.

At a family reunion, they are discussing their decision to use in vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic screening of embryos.  Seven’s cousin, Valerie, is appalled.  She is opposed to the idea of in vitro fertilization and to the entire idea of genetic screening.

Valerie says, “You can’t just choose the babies you want to have.  God will only give you the challenges He knows you can handle.  And if a child is born with a disease, your job is to love that child, no matter what.”

Steven is speechless.  But Marisol is not.  “But if we can guarantee that our child is healthy and will live a happy life, shouldn’t we do that?  We don’t want to raise a child who is doomed to genetic diseases.”

Valerie shakes her head.  “There is no way to know,” she says.  “Kids get sick and die.  Some who have diseases get better.  You can’t control everything.  And besides, that test-tube baby stuff is really expensive.  How can you afford it?”

Now Steven replies, “We want to invest in this procedure now because it might save money in the long run.  I’ve seen how much Huntington’s costs a family – so have you.  I’d rather pay to prevent it now than have to deal with the costs later.”

Valerie responds, “That sounds really rude.  It sounds like you resent people who get sick and need your help.  The whole thing is very selfish.”

Questions for discussion:

What is good or bad, right or wrong, with IVF?

If you accept the good of IVF must you also accept the good of designer babies or selecting the gender of the baby you want to have (these options are available to couples today:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWhfsiXzmA4?

Explain your reasoning.

Is it wrong to want to prevent genetic disease?  Is it a wise investment?  Is it selfish to want to control your child’s genes?  Explain your answer.

Introduction Of Us Health Care Sector

Your Supervising Manager called a meeting early Monday morning to discuss the tasks you will need to accomplish in this week. He/she was very complimentary about the efficiency of your performance and quality of the submitted Memos. However, further investigation is necessary to make sure all areas of the response were covered accordingly.

You are asked to conduct research and to compile the information about the HC affiliated stakeholders in this situation in a table (attached).  Make sure to choose the stakeholders that will be involved in your area of expertise (as per your job description).

For example in an ebola outbreak situation, the Clinical coordinator may choose the CDC (Center for the Disease Control) as a stakeholder due to the mandatory reporting and follow up on the guidelines.  CDC affiliated stakeholder would be a local health department that reacts to the situation based on CDC provided preparatory guidance. At the same time, the local health department would be a direct stakeholder for the Clinical Coordinator because its representatives will be directly involved in guiding potential public health issues at the site.

All information should be presented in a table format. You can use bullet points, subcategories, and other white space organizational components. Each stakeholder should have their own PAGE in the workbook to give you enough space to put information for each stakeholder (4 – HEALTHCARE STAKEHOLDERS). In this instance the stakeholder is not the patient, doctor, hospital or the oil company – you are specifically looking for regulatory or other external stakeholders in the health care industry.

The template is attached. Make sure to provide

– minimum 2 credible sources from the UMUC library per stakeholder (their website does not count)

– the stakeholder home website

– the information pertaining to 4 discussed stakeholders (2 chosen direct and 1 affiliated to each direct stakeholder) – as above the direct is the state department and the affiliated / national is CDC

– APA format is required for the citation and references which can be placed at the bottom of the workbook

Post the table in the Group Forum and in the assignment folder for grading.

The briefing statement from week 2 and the stakeholder analysis from week 4 are the base for your week 5 group assignment- the linkage map.
