Systems analysis serves as a vital design, strategic and long-term planning resource for Healthcare Manager and Administrators. This assignment will allow the student an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the systems framework which represents the central design of every health care delivery system or health services organization. Within the paper, the student needs to accomplish the following:

• Select a health system, health services organization or local hospital.
• Apply the Health System Assessment Headings to collect information from the organization’s website.
• Supplement findings with research on health systems or healthcare management.
• Document findings in an APA formatted paper using the Health System Assessment Headings.

Health System Assessment Headings

Include the following information in your course project.

1. System Foundation

a. Company Description: The healthcare organization description outlines vital details about the company, such as name, location, size, target market (ambulatory, dialysis, hospice, long term care, surgical center or tertiary facility). Also describe the health system’s mission, vision and values.

b. Management Summary: Describe how the organization is governed and introduce the leadership team.

1. System Resources

. Human Resources: Provide insight relating to staffing and human resources.

a. Technology & Equipment: Identify any noted significant current or new diagnostic equipment/technologies (CT Scan/MRI/Laser/Life Science/Research).

b. Finance: Denote and explain financial/economic approach (For Profit/Non-Profit). Provide a general summary reporting operating expenditures, if available.

1. System Processes

. Products or Services: Describe products and/or services with emphasis on the patient value. Note specialized care delivery capabilities (i.e. Cardiology, Emergency Management, Oncology, Stroke, Surgical, or Trauma) and/or any other special capability designations.

a. Market Analysis: The market analysis is also known as a documented investigation of a market that is used to inform a firm’s planning activities, particularly around decisions of inventory, purchase, work force expansion/contraction, facility expansion, purchases of capital equipment, promotional activities, and many other aspects of a company. Provide an overview of the health care market in the local community and potential major competitors.

b. Marketing Strategy & Planning: Describe the organization/system’s marketing strategy, scope of services (inpatient, outpatient, managed care, integrated). Note where you think the organization is positioned in the broader local, state, national, or global market.

1. System Outcomes

. Socioeconomic: Examine any concerns related to treating Special Populations based on the demographic makeup of the community served.

a. Globalization: Identify how the health system/organization could generate a more global impact and what critical health policy issue or issues would it address (access, cost, or quality). Describe what strategies you would recommend for this company to increase partnerships in the local, state, national and global marketplace.

Format

Students should use the following format for their written assignment.

1. Your paper must include three (3) to five (5) pages of written content.
2. The content pages do not include the title, abstract or reference pages.
3. Use APA format and cite sources, as necessary. If you need a refresher on APA, reference the APA Learning Unit. Do your resources meet the CRAAP test?
4. In addition to the 3 to 5 pages of written content, please include a separate:

a. Title Page

b. Abstract

c. Appropriate Headings and Sub-Headings

d. Reference Page (minimum of 5 scholarly references)

Imagine that, for about a year, your nursing unit has been involved in an intensive campaign to improve patient satisfaction scores with pain management. You are getting good data from your patients, as the length of stay on this inpatient geriatric medical nursing unit is only about 6 days. Your hospital does 100% survey to inpatients, and the response rate is about 25%, which is higher than it has been. This notwithstanding, the percent of “patient very satisfied” (top box), with a score of 5, has been in the low 70s. The national benchmark for medical surgical units like yours is about 85% very satisfied. Of all the units in your hospital, your unit is the lowest scoring on this HCAPHS survey. But as your unit is the only geriatric medical nursing unit in the hospital, you’d always thought it was the nature of the patient population.

You have been the day shift representative to the QI team, and the scores on your unit are posted monthly. Here are the numerous strategies that have been tried on your unit and the timeframes.

For this Discussion, examine the strategies and interventions tried in your unit and consider the following questions: a) Were the strategies effective in creating a sustainable change on your nursing unit, and b) To what extent can your nurse manager and CNO count on your unit exceeding the national benchmark in the next quarter, the next year? That is, does this run chart have some predictive ability? Does the run chart support the nursing unit’s decision to celebrate? To what extent can the leadership be confident that the trend will continue?

By Day 3

Based on the scenario, explain what was done successfully and where improvement was needed in the quality improvement process. Identify the performance improvement tools, and explain how they contributed to the outcome.

Support your response with references from the Resources and professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level (see checklist).

We face barriers to effective communication in healthcare. As our world becomes smaller, we are in contact with patients or colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds. Skills must be developed to improve effective communication.

Search the SUO Library for following articles:

• Improving Communication in the Health Care Setting

Based on your research, answer the questions (five sentences / question) in a Microsoft Word document. Think of communication with a healthcare colleague when answering.

• What barriers to effective communication occur with a professional colleague who is culturally diverse? How can these barriers affect patient outcomes?
• What assumptions can you make about a professional colleague whose customs are different than yours? How can these assumptions impact communication?
• How can you overcome language barriers to increase team unity and motivation? Why is it important to take responsibility and improve your cultural competence?

Think of communication with patients.

• What specific language barriers can result when you communicate with a patient who speaks limited English?
• How do you adjust to conflicting values or traditions from patients in a specific religion or culture? For example, patients who are Jehovah’s Witness religion may refuse blood products or other religions may not eat pork. 
• How do you adjust dietary restrictions communicating in a collaborative manner with the dietary department?
