One way that I will continue to integrate evidence into my practice will be to read journal articles, and publications from the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrical and Neonatal Nursing. This will allow me to have the most up to date information on caring for women in my field. One obstacle that may challenge my ability to implement the information I learn would be our hospital policies. To overcome this, I will actively participate in hospital committees and focus groups to change the policies at the hospital.  Another way that I will integrate evidence-based practice into my care will be to attend conferences that focus on labor and delivery. One challenge that may come up is that other nurses in my unit may not attend the same conferences. The way I can overcome this obstacle would be to ask permission to present the information to our labor and delivery unit. If the information is presented to all of the nurses at the hospital, we will have a better chance of changing necessary practices to make sure we are providing the best care to our patients.  Farokhzadian, Khajouei, and Ahmadian (2015) discuss common barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. Some of those barriers include: inability of nurses to distinguish quality of research, lack of resources, and difficulty finding time to read or attend conferences.  Reference  Farokhzadian, J., Khajouei, R., & Ahmadian, L. Discuss why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN. Identify two ways in which you will continue to integrate evidence into your practice and encourage it within your work environment. What obstacles could challenge this plan, and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?(My EBP is on hand washing)

Anne Kolsky    3 posts   Re: Topic 10 DQ 1  Professional Journal  A good journal to begin the quest to reach the capstone short term and long-term goals would be the Journal of Early Childhood Research by SAGE journals. It meets all the criteria for scholarly research and acceptance of research. It is an international peer-reviewed forum for childhood research that bridges across disciplines. It applies theory and research gleaned from empirical and theoretical research related to learning and development in the early childhood years. It is particularly helpful for policymakers and practitioners working in complementary and related fields (SAGE, 2019).  Conference  The Early Childhood Summit 2020 would be a fantastic conference to speak at. It is billed as the largest early childhood conference (at least in the State of Arizona). It would have been even more appealing if it was offered during a Minnesota winter. It is geared for professionals, stakeholders and supporters of early childhood education and health. It invites those in education, health professions, tribal representatives, business and community leaders, school administrators, university and college faculty, and state and local policymakers. Topics included impacts, health and development, language and literacy, empowering leaders, public awareness and engagement, strengthening families, teaching and learning toolboxes and tribal communities. All together there are more than 80 sessions to choose from and several exhibitors on deck. The line-up of main speakers is lacking a health care professional, so signing up to speak would be a terrific opportunity to develop collaborations, teach others about the need to partner, and implement services  First Things First. Re: Topic 10 DQ 1  When disseminating my research and results, one journal I might look at presenting it through is Nursing for Women’s Health. Nursing for Women’s Health is the official clinical practice journal of Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). The mission of this journal is to “improve outcomes for women and newborns through the dissemination of clinical scholarship” (Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses [AWHONN], 2019). This journal focuses on evidence based practice (EBP) research for obstetrics, women and neonates. One type of manuscript that Nursing for Women’s Healthpublishes is original research with a clinical focus (AWHONN, 2019). This category would align with my project. Nursing for Women’s Health is well read among obstetric (OB) nurses, so placing it within this journal would give access to other OB nurses around the country who could glean from my OB triage project.  A health care conference where I might disseminate my project is the “Round Table for OB Nurse Managers” in Minnesota. This is a yearly event where Minnesota OB nurse managers gather and share ideas and processes that are helpful in their respective OB units. This is a great avenue for dissemination as many of the OB managers that come are from rural Minnesota areas like mine and also a good number of these hospitals also use the Excellian electronic medical record platform, so the OB triage order set developed would be easily transferrable. As the project gets implemented and reassessed and evaluated for adjustments, I believe it would be beneficial to other facilities in their OB triage process.  Reference  Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses. Marcia Stapleton    4 posts   Re: Topic 1 DQ 2  Another “cultural” type barrier to EBP in clinical settings is our preference for humans  as our information source. When working in a clinical setting and there are more experienced nurses around us, most nurses default to asking the more experience nurse what to do in a clinical situation.  The more experienced nurse might have experience with the situation, but is it evidence-based?  Even when textual information was accessible in a clinical situation, it was shown that nurses preferred other nurses as a resource over the textual resource (Thompson, 2004).  This is seen over and over in the patient care setting.  When we are wondering how to deal with a situation, we just ask a nurse we think has dealt with the situation, and consider them the expert or the evidence-based research.  As a clinical nurse leader, I field many questions each day.  In order to move towards an evidence based practice, I must direct the nursing staff to the research related to the question.  Reference:  Thompson, C.  Please read the instructions

You are admitting a 19-year old female college student to the hospital for fevers. Using the patient information provided, choose a culture unfamiliar to you and describe what would be important to remember while you interview this patient. Discuss the health care support systems available in your community for someone of this culture. If no support systems are available in your community, identify a national resource.

Remember the cultural related characteristics would be related to communication in the culture, since we are conducting an interview, spacial distance, eye contact, level of openness, taboo subjects, who you should address etc. should be considered. Research cultural communication considerations prior to answering. The AHRQ tool kit is a great source for learning more about culture and providing culturally competent care. Here is the link, https://www.ahrq.gov/health-literacy/quality-resources/tools/literacy-toolkit/healthlittoolkit2-tool10.html

Any sources used should be scholarly and current (within the last five years ideally , expand your search only if there is no current information).

Nursing is a very demanding profession.   Having so many things coming at you at once is difficult.   Having critical thinking skills includes making a quick decision on what it is of highest priority.   Focus on the highest priority along with keeping the other issues in your mind so they are not forgotten can be difficult.   Rebecca I think you are very correct when you say the nurse can “develop a better outcome for the patient and self.”

A nurse must be able to delegate tasks to help them finish these tasks in a timely manor.  For example if you have a patient asking to use the restroom, a doctor on the phone,  and you notice the faucet in the patients bathroom is leaking.   The nurse could asking the Patient Care Assistant to take the patient to the restroom.   Asking the Unit Clerk to call maintenance to fix the faucet.   And speak to the doctor on the phone.   Within a minute all three tasks were done in a timely manor.

Well Said. I like the part about speaking up if you see someone not washing their hands. It happens too often and to be honest the majority of the time its the doctors who are guilty. Just last week I saw a Doc coming out of an isolation room and he did not wash his hand. Even worse he’s an infectious disease MD. not only did I say something to him but I also notified my nurse manager as I felt like that kind of behaviour is unacceptable.
