Three examples of plagiarism are intentional plagiarism which is when a person knowingly copies the work of another person and purposefully did not give credit to the author. Unintentional plagiarism involves a person having poor writing and paraphrasing skills (de Souza, 2016). Cheating is known as plagiarism and is when another person takes someone’s work and presents it as their own (LaDuke, 2013).

Nursing is a very trusted profession and therefore nurses are meant to provide professional care to members of the community, integrity is essential in this type of work. Poor decision making is led by lack of integrity and dishonesty, this can have poor patient outcomes. I think that since most people who are achieving their baccalaureate degree are full time nurses, time is a big issue. They think cutting corners and copying and pasting will save time. They forget that nursing is a profession passed on integrity and trust, plagiarism can affect their performance and impact EBP created to affect change in patient care (LaDuke, 2013).

Things that I will plan to do to ensure my academic integrity when doing work for my BSN is to use plagiarism prevention software like Turnitin, making sure to give credit to each piece of work by citing authors and dates correctly, and for asking for help if I am not sure if it’s a credible source or if I am citing correctly.

Plagiarising as a nursing student, goes beyond the academics. It reaches to the core and very foundation of trust, and integrity upon which the profession of nursing was built, and affects the very care we give to our most trusting clients, our patients. It attempts to uproot and, make a mockery of it all by taking away the trust the public has in our profession. As students, if we do not carefully research the topics and issues before us, and discover the best way to address and get it under control through proper data collection, giving credit to where it is due, we will not be able to carry these out as nurses. This is exactly what we are going to do for every patients concern. We will have to research or investigate the problem, collect data, analyze it, plan, while advocating for the patient as we present our findings to the physicians. Our implementation of the prescribed care will focus on the patient’s safety, and we will patiently and together with the physician evaluate the outcome of the whole process. This will aid to enhance a much better outcome for these patients.Their trust in the profession of nursing will be strengthened. The issue here is about honesty and integrity in our work as nurses. We are expected to research enough materials and get an excellent  grasp of the researched topic while giving credit to the sources of our acquired wisdom. As we practice doing this at this level of our education, we will easily transfer it to our professions as nurses. As we ethically practice this, we will be able to stand with those great giants in healthcare, and deliver the best possible care with integrity to those that have come to us with trust in their time of illness or trauma.

Standards of nursing practice provide guidance and expectations of nursing practice and nursing performance, which help define the responsibilities of the nurse. Standards of practice include assessment, diagnosis, planning, coordination of care, health teaching, consultation, prescriptive authority, and evaluation while the standards of performance include ethics, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, communication, leadership, collaboration, professional performance evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health (Case de Leonardi, 2014 and cited by Green, S.Z. (2018). Each state has their own Nurse Practice Act that addresses the scope and standard of practice specifically for that state and empowers a board of nursing which creates the administrative rules. Once adopted these rules have the same weight and effect as law (Green, 2018).

The Georgia Board of Nursing has the power to enforce the regulations as defined in the Nurse Practice Act as well as amend them if deemed necessary. The board is in charge of developing state nursing standards, license enforcement and evaluate nursing programs on a regular basis. The board also investigates any complaints against licensed nurses and imposes a disciplinary process. It has the authority to require the surrender of a nursing license during any pending action. The board’s primary purpose is to protect the public.

The Georgia Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act recognizes that assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, teaching and supervision are the major responsibilities of a nurse. The steps of the nursing process include assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Standards of Practice delineate the quality of nursing care that a patient/client should receive regardless of whether it is provided solely by a RN or by a RN in collaboration with other licensed or unlicensed personnel. My current position is in quality. These Standards ensure a responsibility and an accountability of the RN to the patient for the quality of nursing care rendered (Georgia Board of Nursing, Nurse Practice Act, Rules Chapter 410-10 Standards of Care).

In an article titled Promoting professional accountability and ownership: Nursing leaders set the tone for a culture of professional responsibility published by American Nurse Today authors Sherman, Rose O.; Cohn, Tanya M. examine and attempt to come up with their definition of professional accountability. The authors state,“Professional accountability is an internally driven mindset. It’s a commitment that you make to yourself and your career when you become a nurse to advance, grow, improve, and adapt to your work. It’s also a pledge to apply your talents, energies, and gifts to improve patient outcomes.” (Sherman, R. O., & Cohn, T. M. 2019 para. 5) The authors explained how professional accountability applies to nursing but focuses on the individual making themselves accountable. While holding oneself accountable as a nurse is very important it will be more effective if the each and every professional holds their counterparts accountable as well. This has the weight of the 3 plus million nurses each leaning on each other to maintain standards of care and act as a “professional” should.

Application of professional accountability in clinical expertise occurs on a regular basis as the nurse is working. How this is happening is due to the fact the nurses are continually expanding their clinical experience with each and every patient they care for. Through detailed systematic assessments they are utilizing a clinical skill and will often refer to professional resources to learn more and ensure they are providing the best level of care possible. They will often utilize more experienced nurses for advice. The nurse will also apply professional accountability in the clinical setting in regard to the nursing process usually by communicating with others in the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) on the plan of care. The nurse is continually applying the nursing process, but it is verbalized to the IDT and usually the charge nurse during the shift. This is a demonstration of professional accountability because the members of the IDT are expecting the nurse present the nursing process to them so they can have input. This expectation of others is the accountability part. Another area of professional accountability is in evidence-based practice (EBP). The general public and the profession expect that nurses are utilizing current EBP in their care for others as this allows for better patient outcomes and is the standard of care. The nurse is held to this standard and is accountable by the other nurses that will care for the client. An example would be a client admitted to the hospital for a surgical procedure will potential have multiple nurses caring for them during their stay in the hospital. Every nurse that cares for the same client need to have continuity and consistency in their care and this is established by standards of care and EBP.

According to Stacey Whitney in eBook Dynamics in Nursing Art and Science of Professional Practice she defines a theory as the following. A theory is a collection of statements that explain a relationship between two or more ideas. Theory maintains a central role in the evolution of the nursing discipline. (Grand Canyon University,2018). She later describes a conceptual model as, “Conceptual models explain a particular way of thinking, or a mental picture of how the theory fits together, according to the theorist. A conceptual model is the organizing structure that defines the theory.” (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Using Whitney’s definition of theory and conceptual model can see that theory is statement whereas a conceptual model is an expression of a particular theory. Any individual can have a conceptual model of something, but a theory has a body of accepted proof. An example would be a personal concept that traffic is heaviest on Thursdays. For this concept to be a model longer definition or visual representation would be needed. To continue the example the model would state that traffic is heaviest on Thursdays due to the fact that it is last day of the week that most people are engaged in regular activities including school and work. For the model to be considered a theory then studies to back the claim up would be needed like traffic studies that would be repeated in several different areas and would continue to be proven true.

A nursing theory would be Orem’s self-care deficit theory.Whitney describes the theory by stating the following: Orem’s theory states that the individual should be in an appropriate environment to receive care. The environment is external; however, for Orem’s theory, the environment and individual are bound together, and they function as one unit. Individual health is a condition in which humans are structurally and functionally complete. Health is considered physical, psychological, interpersonal, and social (Orem, 1995) A brief summary of the theory is that the patient is no longer able to care for themselves at an adequate enough level and this where the nurse will step in and provide care in a manner that matches the patients’ needs to return to health. An example of Orem’s theory being used on daily basis would be when a client is recently diagnosed with diabetes the nurse’s role would be to educate on self-care and how to manage the disease appropriately with things such as foot care, blood glucose checks, and diet changes and so on. The nurse is working with the individual and giving them the ability to care for themselves with the education. By educating the patient the self-care deficit has been eliminated.

Nursing practice started as far back as 250 B.C. Most of the early nursing professionals were men of God. Then they slowly became men associated with the military. During the Crimean War, nursing took a dive for the worst. “Nursing had become a job for the “undesirables” in society — the immoral, the alcoholic, and the illiterate” (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). The income for people within the field, wasn’t sufficient enough to live off of, let alone anything else. After gaining some backing from the military, nursing become a more recognized profession.

Way before our leading lady, Florence Nightingale, stepped into the spotlight, there was the great Dorothea Dix. Dorothea was a pioneer, “she began the movement toward recognizing the role of women in medicine and the development of nursing as a profession” (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). She was an advocate for how our mentally ill patients were being treated and their living conditions. She fought for the people who could not fight for themselves, and she traveled all over to do it.

Another person to shed some light on the nursing profession was not known for his nursing qualities, but his writing. Walt Whitman became a caregiver by accident, by caring for his brother after being wound during the Civil War. “When he went to Washington, DC to care for his brother he saw the plight of many wounded soldiers and decided to stay and care for the sick and wounded” (Grand Canyon University, n.d). After his experiences, he put pen to paper, and did what he did best. He wrote a poem called “The Wound Dresser”. Not only did it explain what he did, but is expressed how badly the men were hurt and how bad the conditions were. The poem is moving and you can almost see all of the men Walt Whitman helped.

Mildred Montag addressed issues within the education for nursing professionals. Mildred “revolutionized nursing education by the creation of the 2 year associate degree in nursing” (Grand Canyon University, n.d). She set up a program that could be achieved in less time than attending a 4 year college. This assisted with the nursing shortage and allowed more nursing to be produced.

All three of these people, changed nursing in some way. History allows us to look back, and remember that this is a profession that is full of compassion and devotion. What an honor it is to be apart of it all.

The public has great trust in our profession, and believes that we will be there to help them alleviate their greatest fears during a time of illness. The only way we can deliver this care is by diligently studying and gaining an up-to-date understanding through research and the application of this knowledge to our patients conditions. This will help to optimize these patients outcomes ( Brower & Nemec, 2017). Our critical thinking skills, our careful observations and the analysis of these informations takes us from being task oriented nurses to educated scientists who are able to enhance their patients lives by making discoveries with solid evidence from our varied data collections and analysis, and implementing those plans for a better outcome for our patients. This process further solves problems and impacts our clients or patients  by improving their outcomes ( Brower & Nemec, 2017).

In order to ensure academic integrity in my work, I will thoroughly research materials on a given subject and gain a good understanding of it (Eberle, 2013). I will carefully study and ask questions to gain the understanding needed to become a safe nurse.

I will be very careful to give credit to each source I use by citing it authors and the dates of its publications.

Plagiarism is when we are using another person’s thoughts, idea, work, and effort without acknowledging it. When we do not use the name of the author or use the resource and material but don’t cite the source or author. We are then using someone else work as our own and this is being dishonest and cheat. This discredits us not only personally but professionally also we lose trust.

When we properly cite the name of the author, quotation and a source of the reference then it helps us to prove that our research is substantial and is based on some evidence. This gives credibility to our work and proves our viewpoint. In the nursing profession keeping the integrity, reliability, confidentiality, and trust is the key. In order to maintain the academic integrity, we should use the resource properly by providing the name of the author, publication, book or article and also mentioning it in our references. Also should not copy someone work. I will try to ensure that I use the resources properly and ask for help if I need to.
