Workers had a holistic view of their role, they believed that work was necessary to achieve harmony between mind/body and the external world, thus, they needed work to feel complete (Carroll, 1998:13-15). Workers were able to derive immense pleasure and satisfaction from their working life. Industrialism, however, changed that work ethic and it was replaced by the modern work ethic where workers cannot always immediately see the fruits of their labor and therefore are alienated from it (Sennett, 1998:99). Work in contemporary times is valued mainly for its economic benefits and the fact that it enables leisure activity and family life. Family life has also experienced a change in attitudes towards assumptions about love and what it means to be part of a family. The marriage was once seen as necessary for procreation and to regulate sexual behavior, but ideas about modern marriages and intimate relationships&nbsp.have transformed and this is reflected in the makeup of those relationships and family composition.&nbsp.

That definition was of “a land in which life could be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” This is a dream that European upper classes might have some difficulty in interpreting and now many of our own are having trouble hanging on to. Americans have become weary and mistrustful of it. It is a dream about a social order in which each man and woman shall attain their fullest potential of which they are innately capable of being recognized by others for what they are regardless of the circumstances from which they came. This is the dream that is being lost to Americans who are working hard and losing to companies who are not.

From the time we are young children, we are taught, if we work hard and do well, we will be rewarded. Essential to the American dream is the belief that you will be rewarded if you are successful. This is so much a part of the society and culture that it also becomes part of the ethics of the culture. If you work hard throughout your life, you will have what you want and maybe more. This is where the anger really comes from.

Greed is part of the American dream. All Americans are greedy. Americans do not hope to have just enough, they hope to have everything they can get but they expect to get it by working hard, doing a good job, and being successful (Sandel, 2009) anything else is considered theft. Additionally, permissive parents tend to “accept and support all the child’s behavior and actions including sexual and aggressive impulses” (Talay-Ongan &amp. Emily, 2005, 130). Levine, &amp. Munsch, (2011) asserted that permissive parents also hold the view that restricting child’s actions in any way might “infringe on the child’s autonomy, in turn hindering normative child development” (Lerner, 2003, 70). In light with this, the permissive parents rarely set rules for the child’s behavior. In fact, a permissive parent is more concerned about “being the child’s friend than an authority figure” (Levine, &amp. Munsch, 2011, 28).
