This paper will conduct a detailed analysis of these two theories when evaluating the usefulness of psychological motivation theories in explaining behaviour in organizations. The paper has briefly explained the context of the study. After this brief background of the study, the next chapter is the literature review that will provide appropriate examples of how useful psychological motivation theories are when describing behaviour in organizations. The last chapter will be the conclusion, and it will summarise the results of this paper.

A study by Heng (2003) defined motivation as ‘the study why people think and behave as they do (2003, p. 45).’ Psychology motivation is concerned with examining what employees are doing (choice of behaviour), estimating time taken by an employee to initiate an activity (latency of behaviour), measuring the efforts taken by an employee to complete a task (intensity of behaviour), estimating the time an employee wishes to stay in a particular organisation (persistence of behaviour), and finding out what an individual thinks and feels when doing a task (emotional reactions of behaviour).&nbsp.

I agree that for offenders to be deterred stealing from the swimming club, security measures such as hardening of the target must be instituted. For certain, the absence of security measures in the swimming club must have encouraged offenders to break into the club. t will not be long that this simple burglary will escalate and in addition to cash, other important equipment in the club may be stolen. I also agree with findings of Bruce that apprehension almost do not work (2005 pg. 74). Most of the time, burglars will already be gone before apprehending officers can catch them. So the question now would be what is the most effective way of hardening the target given the situation? By now, the burglars are already emboldened from stealing the club. The best suggestion is to have a combination of security measures that would deter the offenders.

Introduction

An aspiring entrepreneur has a few alternatives available to fulfill his/her dreams of owning and managing a business like franchise, buyout, and starting a new venture from the scratch. These options present different risk/reward situations and a careful evaluation can lead to the right choice. This essay briefly describes the advantages/disadvantages of starting a business from the scratch or buying out an existing business, and considers the specific case of a franchise option.

Advantages/disadvantages of alternatives

Starting from the scratch denotes a high risk-reward situation. Advantages include the freedom to implement one’s ideas to a large extent, aligning the investment and resource mobilization with market conditions rather than committing to rigid plans, and ease of entry and exit with minimum dependence on outsiders (Longenecker et al, 2011, pp.104-133). Disadvantages include high risk of venture failure due to lack of previous experience, making a wrong choice of product/service, and longer time needed to achieve physical and financial goals.

Outright purchasing of an existing business denotes a medium risk and gives assured customer base and revenues from the start. This advantage is diluted if the unit has poor reputation for quality or ethical practices. While the experienced staff is an advantage, if there are unresolved industrial relations problems, the new owner has to solve them, which is not always easy. Also, it may not always be possible to identify hidden liabilities representing additional risks, which accrue to the new owner (ibid.).

Taking out a franchise is a minimum risk option for new entrepreneurs since it provides the advantages of a new unit as well as a running business model. On the minus side, one has to depend on the parent company for all major decisions besides committing to pay initial fees and royalties. Profitability is reduced as a result of these limitations.

The International Franchise Association (IFA) provides assistance, both online and offline, and is of considerable help to entrepreneurs in choosing a franchise that fits their bill (IFA, 2012).

Conclusion

Various options are available for new entrepreneurs with different risk/reward profiles. Starting and running a business requires experience. Risks of failure can be minimized if one goes for franchise option and gain experience before implementing more ambitious plans. Even while choosing a franchisor, one needs to consider the nature of business vis-à-vis one’s interest, investment levels, initial training and on-going support, scalability etc.

To prove or disprove this, we need to first clarify the meaning of the ‘French Revolution’. The Revolution as it is most popularly called was actually the sum of several shorter protest movements which led to the ultimate widespread changes in the French administration. These changes can be summarized as meeting the demand of “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity”. Revolutionaries aimed at a more centralized government, more independence of the individual irrespective of his or her lineage, equal treatment before the law, a more tolerant outlook on religious beliefs, and recognition of merit in work.

Georges Lefebvre, noted historian and chronicler of the French Revolution has called Napoleon a hater of feudal privileges, inequality among citizens and bigotry based on religion. In these sentiments, Napoleon was on agreement with the principles of the Revolution. For instance his code of governance (or the Code civil des Français) provided the bourgeoisie with more jobs. One was not required to be born of a noble family to earn a respectable status in society any longer. The Legion of Honor that Napoleon established also recognized and rewarded handsomely merit and talent in individuals. This anti-aristocratic ideal was again exemplary of the Revolution’s propaganda.

Napoleon did have other features in common with the Revolution too. His outlook resembled that of the Jacobins’ in its emphasis on nationalism. He sought to consolidate the gains of the Revolution by urging the citizens to preserve their nationalist loyalties. A centralized state would also bring France the stability it was desperately looking for.

In his tolerance towards all religions, Napoleon reflected the Revolution again. The Revolution had gone as far as to abolish all organized religion. Napoleon, for his part, conceded some of the Church’s powers back to the clergy, but retained most of them. He was equally disposed towards all religions and did not have any prejudices based on these differences. The Church had been previously above the State, but the Revolution reversed this situation, making way for a much more secular France.

Napoleon was above all a very practical ruler. He would adopt strategies and policies as he saw fit from either the Revolution or the Old Regime. He cannot be therefore called a blind follower of the revolutionary ideals. He used his own, keen sense of governance to style his Code and rule. Neither did he make the Revolution his unquestionable mentor, nor did he ignore it. He did draw heavily from the basic revolutionary principles and strengthened the overthrow of the oppressive monarchy, making him an apparent heir to the Revolution.

However, Napoleon himself made the claim of having buried the Revolution. By consolidating its achievements and re-fashioning them into his Code Napoleon, he can be seen as having preserved the Revolution by ending it. Had he not stepped in when he did, the state would have possibly reverted to the ancien regime under the Bourbons. He is also often criticized for ignoring one of the three ideals of the Revolution: that of “Liberty”. In his defense, it can be argued that when he came to power, individual liberty in France was not in existence.

In conclusion, it is true that Napoleon was the “heir” of the French Revolution of 1789 after a fashion, especially since he himself claimed to be one. but it is not entirely true that he followed every article of the Revolutionary doctrine.

In order to finally air the interview, Bergman applied some unethical practices by going to other media personalities and to have them write a story about CBS being controlled by a tobacco-company. This did not bode well for his smooth relations with his colleagues in 60 Minutes and in CBS. This eventually led to his resignation from CBS citing the fact that he could not any more have the same integrity among his sources because he could not promise that they would not be left in the lurch after providing him with crucial information. Lastly, the acts of the heads of the tobacco company in giving false testimony to the Congress on the effects of tobacco, the intimidation tactics they applied on Wigand and his family, and the strong-arm techniques they applied to CBS and 60 Minutes are just some of the many unethical decisions and practices applied by Brown and Williamson.
