Health Promotion in Minority Populations

Select an ethnic minority group that is represented in the United States (American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander). Using health information available from Healthy People, the CDC, and other relevant government websites, analyze the health status for this group.

In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words, compare and contrast the health status of your selected minority group to the national average. Include the following:

  1. Describe the ethnic minority group selected. Describe the current health status of this group. How do race and ethnicity influence health for this group?
  2. What are the health disparities that exist for this group? What are the nutritional challenges for this group?
  3. Discuss the barriers to health for this group resulting from culture, socioeconomics, education, and sociopolitical factors.
  4. What health promotion activities are often practiced by this group?
  5. Describe at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the most effective in a care plan given the unique needs of the minority group you have selected. Provide an explanation of why it might be the most effective choice.
  6. What cultural beliefs or practices must be considered when creating a care plan? What cultural theory or model would be best to support culturally competent health promotion for this population? Why?

150 Words Positive Response No Plagiarism With References Due Tomorrow At 800 Am Est

Components of a healthy community are outlined in the textbook as having “low crime rates, good schools, strong family life, robust economy, good jobs, high environmental quality (clean air, water), accessible and quality health services, adequate housing, civic involvement, nice weather, good transportation (roads, public transportation), wide variety of leisure activities, exposure to the arts, [and] reasonable taxes” (Maurer & Smith, 2013). Is the culmination of all these variables what defines a healthy community? I don’t think there is ever a perfect combination of these things in most communities. However, I do think that communities that try to achieve these things can be described as healthy or at least striving for health.  For example, a city (a general area that can define community) may not have the best roads or schools or crime rates, but if community members are working towards improving these things, they could be at least described as working towards the improvement of the health of their community. I suppose “health” in a community, as with an individual, is a spectrum and relative to the context in which it exists. We as healthcare providers aim to reach out to our communities and educated them in order to teach them to create changes in themselves and their surrounding areas. “Health promotion is the process of enabling people to improve their health, and stretches beyond individual behavior to encompass areas such as social and environmental interventions… community outreach is a catalysis that can bring these fields together” (Mucedola, 2015).

Educating our youngest community members about healthful lifestyles and learning healthy habits early on is one of the best forms of prevention of chronic diseases. “School and community based health education continue to be valuable assets to curbing the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States” (Mucedola, 2015). This is why public health education and nursing has such an important place in the healthcare system.

A healthy community may be one that has a lower risk of chronic disease and utilizes education and prevention strategies to promote health and reduce risk.  Community health nursing is a combination of nursing and public health practices that focus on prevention, health promotion, risk reduction, and well-being of a community or population (GCU, 2015).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was attempting to address community health issues by the implementation of the Health Communities Program (HCP).  Unfortunately, this program is no longer funded.  However, the goal for the HCP was to partner with local and state officials to prevent chronic diseases, educate, and promote strategies to help people make healthy choices in all aspects of life (CDC, 2017).  Therefore, one example of a healthy community would be one that provides support by way of physical activity (safe and clean places to exercise and play), availability of healthy food (more farmers markets, fresh produce and meat vs. corner stores with less healthy selections), and smoke-free/drug free environments. There are many other things a healthy community could do such as workshops, cooking classes, exercise groups, or various types of clubs to get people (old and young) out and active.

One thing that the CDC states is necessary to successful prevention of chronic diseases is providing the community with “the tools needed to achieve health equity and prevent chronic diseases” (CDC, 2017).  As a healthcare provider, I would utilize workshops or information sessions that include fact-based health information regarding prevention of obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease or any other topic of interest within the community.  I would integrate how diet and exercise can help change these diagnosis’ and provide information and motivation to pursue healthier lifestyles.  Getting people involved in their own community can help change the community, as a whole, for the better. Community/public health nursing is the care provided by educated nurses in a particular place and time directed toward promoting, restoring, and preserving the health of the total population or community (Maurer & Smith, 2013).
