History and Philosophy of Sport Dr. Michele K. Donnelly SPAD 35065 Spring 2019

Identifying Your Personal Philosophy (15% of your course grade)

This assignment is due in class on Wednesday, February 20.

Assignment this paper is to focus on your own personal philosophy, and how your philosophy informs your beliefs about sport. The content should be personalized to be meaningful to you, while also using the formal philosophies that we have studied. Your explanation of your philosophy should be related to your particular interest in sport (for example, from a perspective focused on marketing, exercise science, athletic training, physical education, coaching, etc.; your current position or a position you aspire to hold).

“One of the main goals of philosophy is to clarify and help people sort out their beliefs so that the behavior which stems from those beliefs is sound and consistent” (Thomas, 1983, p. 19).

this paper needs to address the formal philosophies we have studied in the course. Specifically, given the different views presented by the formal philosophies we study, how do you make sense of life, and of sport? What makes us human and gives life meaning? This should be about your individual beliefs as they relate to these formal philosophies, i.e., which formal philosophical perspective most closely reflects your personal philosophy?

Your paper will include your metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological positions. Essentially, you are placing yourself and your beliefs in the bigger picture of human thought. Use the course materials about formal philosophies (e.g., classical humanism, Cartesian philosophy, pragmatism, existentialism, philosophy of science, sacred circle) to think about your own beliefs and how you understand the world, your place in the world, and how this influences your beliefs about sport.

Purpose When you have completed this assignment, you will have firsthand experience with philosophy. We all operate using a particular set of beliefs. This assignment gives you the opportunity to think explicitly about what your beliefs are, and to articulate those beliefs using the language of philosophy. This assignment contributes to your ability to understand and express your philosophical beliefs, as well as to understand the philosophical positions of others. In addition, you will improve your academic writing skills.

Personal Philosophy

To explain my personal philosophy, I must first state the fact that I am a metaphysical dualist and I believe that ideas are more real than matter, but still place some value on the body, and not ll of it on the mind. Throughout this paper I intend on looking at my personal philosophy through the eyes of coach, to better integrate the ideas behind sport and philosophy and how they relate. With coaching being something, I have done before, it gives a chance to reflect on my experience and allows me to understand why I mad the decisions I made more.

First, I would like to look at my ontological position. I believe my ontological position is from a dualist perspective, with mind being the most important part of a human being; however, still placing some value on the body. The mind, I believe, is also the source that provides the most accurate representation of reality, because the body senses, with things like morphine can be tricked much easier than the mind can. As a coach, I prefer my players to do their part of watching film and creating a strategy for a game, rather than players that just go out and play. I am of the belief that the reality of a sports game is focused more through the mind rather than the body. Of course, the goal of every game is winning right? Now which player would be better suit for winning? The one that just goes out and feels the game out with their body and sense? Or the one that focuses on watching film and creating strategies?

This brings me into my next point, which is identifying my epistemological position. I believe my epistemological position is that we acquire knowledge through intellectual activity. With evidence such as learning through a classroom setting, for all Untied States schools. In sports however, it is a coach teaching the mind of his players so that they can perform during game. That is why there is half time speeches in some sports, it is addressing the issue and teaching players how to solve it. With the idea that training the mind will then translate to the body to get the body to do what the coach and player wants it to do.

The first page is the writing assignment requirements and the second page is what I have so far. I need help with proofreading what I have so far. I also need help extending the length of my paper, by better explaining my ontological and epistemological positions.

Here is the feedback from my professor so far…”

The example you use for your ontological position is incomplete. What are you describing here? How does it demonstrate your ontological position? Also, you never explain what an ontological position is, and you are missing citations throughout your paper.” I also believe the same thing applies to my epistemological position. I just really need help better explaining everything and I am not quite sure how to do that.
