The Reuters’ video exemplifies this with scientists developing a stain-, scratch-, and damage-resistant coating inspired by the slippery walls of the pitcher plant.

People have greatly benefited from the innovations spurred on by the study of nature, especially plants. In fact, the opportunity for rediscovering new and useful technologies from nature is so great that a new body of science has been established: Biomimetics. Biomimetics or Biomimicry is the creation of new technology by imitating functions found in nature and applying these concepts to various fields such as robotics, engineering and even medicine (Lepora, et. al.). Many commonplace materials such as velcro, to complex architectural designs are innovations inspired by plants (Cohen 6,13, 612). Plants are also used as biological models to study the action of various organic and inorganic substances at the cellular level and they are also utilized for studies in molecular biology and genetics (Morrissey 295).

Aside from the benefits gained by science, plants also impart wisdom in conducting our day-to-day lives. Growth, resilience, stability, and nurture can all be observed and imbibed from planting trees from seeds. Appreciation for life in general can be fostered through gardening and watching the plants bloom and fruit in their season. These are important values which should be rooted in every man’s soul.

Sources of knowledge and inspiration can come from all around. Plants should never be disregarded in this aspect for the kingdom contains a plethora of scientific information as well as examples for our everyday lives. As Sir Francis Bacon once said,

Natural abilities are like natural plants, they need pruning by study (Klein). From the realms of science and technology to the depths of man’s psyche, the fountain of knowledge from the world of plants continue to enrich, enlighten and inspire.

Shooting Dad is a reading that looks at the interaction between father and daughter. The daughter has been opposing his father’s lifestyle for almost the whole of her life. Conversely, when she grows up, she discovers she has so much in common with her father. This paper will look at the reading, where I will discuss some aspect that made an impact on me.

The difference between father and daughter is highlighted from the beginning of the story. Her father is a Democrat while she is a Republican. It is astonishing to see how the two are divided along political lines. It goes to the extent of putting up posters of their respective political parties in sections of the house and his father sticking stickers on his car. Moreover, the daughter does not like guns, as opposed to his father who is obsessed with them. She is so deep into art and calm, while his father is stubborn and single minded.

In another occasion, after her father was scolded by her mother for shooting at crows, he claimed shooting is a pastime like apple pie and baseball. This statement means that he could use his gun whenever, however, and whenever he felt like. In addition, the author’s sister has so much in common with his father as she loves guns too. Later on, she realizes she shares some similarities with her father as she comes to terms with his father’s love for artillery. She even wants to go and see his father’s manufactured cannon being launched. She finds out his father is artistic and creative (Vowell, 2001). Though they seemed different at first, they were similar in many ways.

Proscenium Theatre Setup Affiliation The proscenium stage Despite the proscenium stage being the most common type of a theatre stage for centuries now, I still prefer this setting than any other. Proscenium stages have a large arch (proscenium arch) through which audience can see the performance. The audience faces the stage directly and can view one scene side.

Proscenium stages visually allow a much more thrilling approach for creation of stage images. Their depths allow for perspectival effects, something impossible in other stage settings. The distance they allow between audience and actors deem them the best theatrical of spaces.

The space left behind a proscenium is fashioned to be packed with scenery and flats for elaborate sets but it is not necessary. When it is left empty, it symbolizes an eloquent empty space and in its vastness and hollow cavernousness expresses choices not made, memories, and uncreated illusions (Puchner, 2007). There is an overwhelming feeling watching characters on this set up create their fictional existence in front and inside this purpose-built cave.

With all the proscenium theatre effects, the time an actor takes walking across to downstage, effects of rather murky little figures emerge into the brightness from the gloom, extraordinary light quality on a proscenium stage, and fog effects among others are a genuine marvel and purely a theatrical wonder. This theatre setup is dumb striking and amazing specially the effects of an empty proscenium.

The stage makes provisions for an actor to stand between the greater stage expanse and the auditorium thresholds, a virtual space where we can only glimpse, but not enter physically awarding them a liminal position and a magical sphere to speak right at us (Puchner, 2007). Personally, there is nothing comparable to Proscenium Theater. It is the ultimate theatrical high. It does not take much as well, just an arch, a lot of space and a great actor.

IMPACT OF THE DEATH PENALTY ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Over the years, there have been occasional incidences of execution of criminals for various capital offenses in the country (Bureau of Justice Statistics). This was practiced in various states with numbers varying in individual states. However, there were oppositions to these rulings since some people argued that it was an inhumane way of punishing capital offenders. In the case of Furman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 153 (1972), there was debate over declaring the death as punishment for rape. After a suspension of the case for four years, it was decided that it was unjust to execute rapists and thus there were reforms throughout Supreme Courts invalidating this law. In fact, it was against the 8th Amendment of the United States Constitution.

In the case of Kennedy v. Louisiana, 554 U.S. 407 (2008), involving the rape of a 12 year old girl by his stepfather, the ruling was against the death penalty. It was argued that one should not be sentenced to death since the victim did not die. They laid out debate that it was unfair to kill such a criminal since it was not a capital offense compared to other cases involving outright murder.

There is a trend showing that with the passing of time, capital punishments had to be revised so as to allow justice and consistency in the rulings of court. No evidence has shown that the death penalty had an effect on the rate of crime in any state. This was because, if anything, it contributed to murder at all levels and the devaluation of human beings.

Michelangelo and Bernini both created magnificent sculptures of the Biblical David, They are often compared because Michelangelo’s figure epitomizes the High Renaissance period in art history, while Bernini’s David shows the distinctive features of Baroque art.

Michelangelo’s David stands with his weight on one leg, but balanced in such a way that he stands squarely with his body facing forward. There is symmetry in his leg positions, and a slight variation from this in the raising of one arm. David exudes a calm masculine strength through an emphasis on the shape, especially the forms of human anatomy, such as his large muscular hands, and slim torso which is like an inverted triangle. This statue lacks depth, since all the focus is on the frontal view. David’s expression is cool and enigmatic, which distances the viewer and encourages contemplation of his beauty rather than empathy with the story of David and Goliath.

Bernini’s David, on the other hand, is leaning to one side, in a bent position. It is as if he is moving through time, having just picked up the stone, and now aiming it in his sling and about to fire it at Goliath. The viewer is drawn his facial expression, which is contorted in quite extreme emotion, and the sweeping line from his left ankle to his head. There is no mistaking a frown of concentration around his eyes and a firm determination in his downturned mouth. Bernini’s David has both arms drawn to the left, holding the sling tight, which takes him temporarily off balance. Arm and leg muscles are tensed, making the sculpture dramatic, and dynamic, almost as if he is about to step out from the podium. This is an open form sculpture which interacts with the space around it in a dramatic way, while Michelangelo’s David is static, and merely looks out from a still space.
