first peer: In our society poverty effects many people from getting the proper health care that is needed.  Living in poverty makes people more at risk for different type of diseases.  Living in poverty also make you more vulnerable to health issue such as  diabetes,  High blood pressure and various type of cancers. Being poor you do not have assess getting the education that is needed for preventative care . 

second peer: Poverty-the state of being extremely poor. the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. Reading this definition screams “Money is the root to all evil”  When someones unfortunate situation stops them from receiving  any kind of health care or contributes to the situation, its unacceptable. If one does not have the means to live, eat, bathe, obtain  medications, then how do we expect anything to change or get better. And other day something or everything is going up in price. How do we work our way out of something when stuff just get thrown right back on us.

              Comprehensive Integrated Psychiatric Assessment

The comprehensive integrated psychiatric assessment of a child or adolescent consists of gathering information from not only the child but from several sources, most notably the family members, caregivers, and the child’s teacher or school counselor. Because of this, the diagnostic assessment becomes more complicated. Issues of confidentiality, privacy, and consent must be addressed. Also, the PMHNP must take into consideration the impact of culture on the child.

In this Discussion, you review and critique the techniques and methods of a mental health professional as he or she completes a comprehensive integrated psychiatric assessment of an adolescent.

Week 1 Discussion

Nursing revolves around the patient, the nurse, the patient’s health, and the environment. Therefore, these four concepts are known as the metaparadigms of nursing. There are many additional concepts that come to mind when I think of nursing. As a registered nurse, I feel as if collaboration and advocacy are two additional concepts that are relevant to my personal practice.

Collaboration is defined as “working with others in a way that promotes/encourages each person’s contributions toward achieving optimal/realistic patient/family goals” (Butts & Rich, 2018). In my opinion, working in the healthcare field truly requires amazing teamwork. A patient cannot heal purely by the medications the nurse gives them every morning. They must walk with physical therapy to get stronger, they must get their breathing treatments from the respiratory therapist, their labs have to be drawn by the phlebotomist, the radiologists must read their x-rays, and the physician must speak to/evaluate the patient each day to ensure that his/her goals are being met. Thankfully, I work in an environment where collaboration is welcomed. As the nurse, physicians often ask my opinion, as I have a closer relationship to the patient. Collaboration is most successful when there is active communication regarding patient care, and the correct resources are used to optimize patient outcomes (Butts & Rich, 2018).

Advocacy is the second concept that I feel is relevant to my personal practice. According to Butts and Rich (2018), advocacy is defined as “working on another’s behalf and representing the concerns of the patient/family and nursing staff.” On a daily basis, I find myself advocating for my patients. I do this by keeping the entire healthcare team informed, providing assistance or getting them in touch with the correct people to get them assistance, and providing professional nursing care. Working on an orthopedic unit, I most often find myself advocating for my patient regarding their pain. As nurses, we are taught that “pain is what the patient says it is.” If I feel as if my patient does not have adequate pain control, I am quick to call the physician. By advocating for my patients, I want to ensure that they get the proper care to optimize their health and outcomes.

I believe that many things are important in nursing practice. All of the aspects of the care we provide has a real and very strong strong impact on the lives of patients but, also their families. I believe in being an advocate for my patients, I always educate people on the importance of being an advocate for themselves. The truth is that, they will not always have a nurse at the bedside who truly advocates for what is best for his or her patients. I believe that advocating for patients is putting yourself and your opinions to the side and considering what the patient wants. At the same token, we need to be educators, we need to explain to our patients their real choices and what is really at stake or what their expectations should be. When we educate our patients on a diagnosis or pain levels or plan of care we need to bring facts and our education to be able to truly advocate for them. Many times I have had patients ask to be free of pain 1hr after major abdominal surgery, I educate them on what to expect, for example, pain level not being at zero at this point, and explaining medication orders. But, I also take time to think what medications are ordered for my patients and if nothing ordered for pain is working I advocate for them because I don’t want them to suffer unnecessarily.

As nurses we have the education and the background to support a persons’ wants and needs. We are their voice in front of doctors, and case manager and many other practices. We have the education to support what their needs are and know how to ask for what they truly need to help them feel better (Gerber, 2018).
