You are a public health scientist and informatician assigned to lead a team of environmental specialists investigating an outbreak of lead poisoning in a small community. The suspicion is that the lead poisoning has been caused by pollution generated by a large commercial plant that produces paints under a federal contract. The community water sources have been contaminated with the plant waste. Your assigned task is to organize your team and lead a surveillance investigation. You must meet with the community’s elected leaders to discuss the outbreak, present preliminary outbreak data, and explain how your team will proceed with its investigation (O’Carroll, Yasnoff, Ward, & Ripp, 2010).
You have chosen the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which is used in the CDC’S Epi Info™ application to understand, question, interpret, and visualize data.
As the team leader and primary informatician, explain the data collection procedures, which you will instruct the team to use to investigate the outbreak. Why might you choose to use the CDC’s Epi Info™ and its GIS for the outbreak analyses and report? From your readings on theory and strategy-based communication principles, describe what approach you will use to present likely outcomes, and to best answer questions posed by the community leaders. In this assignment, you will continue to use your pre-intervention asthma surveillance data set from the CDC in the Excel spreadsheet to analyze your database from a summary perspective. You will calculate various statistical means of the asthma data in your Excel spreadsheet using Pivot Table reports. You will then answer the following questions in a 3–4-page paper, and embed your pivot tables in your report to explain the summary results.

Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization (these have extensions .edu, .gov, or .org). Presenting consumer sources such as e-magazines, newspapers, Wikipedia, WebMD, or other commercial websites (these have extensions .com) as references is not appropriate.
Scholarly writing: Use an academic paper format, not an essay based on your opinions or experience. Avoid using the first person in writing. Synthesize what you learned from the sources you read; write papers in your own words; and cite sources within the text, as well as include a properly formatted reference list. APA format is recommended, but you may use another standardized format.

In Week 4, you will continue to assume the role of the public health informatician and use your pre-intervention asthma surveillance data set from the CDC to calculate risk/odds ratios and prevalence/incidence rates. Review the data set from a population perspective and calculate various population ratios and rates for the asthma data in your Excel spreadsheet. You will then answer the following questions in a short application paper of 3–4-pages, explaining your results. You may refer to the suggested readings for this week.
