Module 1 – SLP

INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY THEORY AND HEALTH STATISTICS

Your specific assignment for this week is to select one type of quantitative health datum to collect from your own life. Some examples of data to collect could be:

  1. How many minutes do you spend exercising each day?
  2. What is your total daily caloric intake in calories?
  3. What is your resting heart rate in beats per minute?
  4. How many ounces of water do you drink each day?
  5. What is your estimated total caloric expenditure from exercise each day?
  6. What is your estimated daily intake of saturated fat in grams?
  7. What is your daily systolic/diastolic blood pressure?

Your Task:

  1. Choose one variable that varies measurably from day to day. Be sure to specify the units of measurement, and state how it will be gathered.
  2. Then collect at least 5 days worth of data on that one variable. For example, if your variable is how many minutes you spend exercising each day, simply record the number of minutes that you spend exercising each day during the sampling period. Be sure to save this data for use in remaining SLP assignments. The more data points that you gather during the session, the better.
  3. Describe the data you have collected and its importance in relations to individual/population’s health.

Submit your (1-2 pages) paper by the end of this module.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.

The following guidance appears only in Module 1, but it applies to the assignments throughout the course:

File format:  Your work should be prepared using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel depending upon the assignment instructions. For assignments requiring video or voice recordings, use media formats that are supported by MyTLC Courses as noted in our Trident Support page.

In-text citations and references:  Be sure that all information and ideas in your papers are supported by in-text citations and corresponding references at the end of the paper.

Scholarly sources:  Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization (these have extensions .edu, .gov, or .org). Presenting consumer sources such as e-magazines, newspapers, Wikipedia, WebMD, or other commercial websites (these have extensions .com) as references is not appropriate.

Scholarly writing:  Use an academic paper format, not an essay based on your opinions or experience. Avoid using the first person in writing. Synthesize what you learned from the sources you read; write papers in your own words; and cite sources within the text, as well as include a properly formatted reference list.

Use of direct quotes:  Use of direct quotes should be avoided. Only use direct quotes when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. In the rare instance that directly quoted material is used, it must be properly cited (with quotation marks and page numbers in the in-text citation); quotes should not exceed 5-10% of the total paper content.

The Writing Style Guide that is linked on the TLC Portal homepage under My Resources will help clarify expectations.

Mod 1 Slp Cross Cultural Health Perspectives

Module 1 – SLP

HEALTH, CULTURE, AND IDENTITY

Read the following articles, which can be accessed in the Trident library:

Purcell, N., & Cutchen, L. (2013). Diabetes self-management education for African Americans: Using the PEN-3 model to assess needs. American Journal of Health Education, 44(4), 203-212.

Lindberg, N. M., Stevens, V. J., & Halperin, R. O. (2013). Weight-loss interventions for Hispanic populations: The role of culture. Journal of Obesity, 2013, 542736.

Choose ONE of the articles’ topics to focus on for the rest of the SLP. You will use the information in the selected publication as you go through the phases of applying the PEN-3 model to develop a hypothetical health education program.

Write a three-page paper that includes the following:

  1. Provide a brief overview of the health issue among your selected group, statistics about the scope of the problem, and its implications for health.
  2. Describe the Cultural Identity of the group you chose. Specifically address how each of the PEN-3 model’s three factors within Cultural Identity applies to your group and provide examples. Use subheadings to clearly show that you have addressed each of the three factors. Support your discussion with references from scholarly and professional references (not just your opinion).
  3. Reflect on the required readings, the article you choose for this assignment, and your own beliefs. Then, briefly describe how culture influences health care and what you learned that could help you effectively interact with diverse cultures in the health care setting.

Length: 3 pages, excluding the cover page and the reference list.

Mn581 Interpretation Of Common Diagnostic Labs In Pediatric Primary Care

No plagiarism Please. Template will need references and intext citations.

Please read instructions carefully to ensure maximum grade.

Applying Current Evidence Based Practice Guidelines

Assignment: Interpretation of Common Diagnostic Labs in Pediatric Primary Care

Nurse practitioners routinely order labs for a variety of reasons. Some labs are recommended as part of a certain wellness check. Some labs are tested at birth and repeated at regular intervals. Many labs are ordered to rule in or rule out a diagnosis or just to add to an objective data base along with physical examination, vital signs, image studies, etc. Some of the labs can be done at the point of care (POC) such as an Accu-Check®. Most all labs require a venous blood sample but may require different additives that are in the collection tube. Other samples include arterial blood, urine, sputum, spinal fluid, or exudate.

You will find the “Unit 7 Assignment Template” that you will use to complete this Assignment. It is organized to include information about a common lab test that you will be completing in pediatric primary care.

Please fill in the requested information.

Module 1 – SLP

INTRODUCTION TO ETHICAL AND LEGAL PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTHCARE

As a healthcare professional, you are among a group of frontline workers. Frontline workers are the backbone of effective health systems. In fact, according to Frontline Health Workers Coalition (2018), “frontline workers play a critical role in providing local context for proven health solutions, and they connect with families and communities to the health system.” Successful policy advocacy and creation is often encouraged by frontline healthcare workers since they are the individuals who interact with the consumers (patients) the most. Your knowledge and perspective are vital to policy and lawmakers as a voice for healthcare consumers and for providing validation/opposition to laws and policy.

Recently the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced the “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The office’s stated goal is to “protect institutions and people who refuse to provide medical assistance based on religious objections.” As noted by HHS (2018), the office is intended to protect religious beliefs. As with most policies, there are opponents and proponents. In general, supporters advocate that the office will protect against religious discrimination while opponents believe the bill will allow for open discrimination against women and LGBTQ individuals.

Information about the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division can be found at the following source: https://www.hhs.gov/conscience/index.html

Conduct additional research on Conscience and Religious Freedom. For your Module 1 SLP assignment, you are to use reasoning (from a healthcare professional perspective) and ethical principles (i.e., Religious Ethics, Normative Ethics, Descriptive Ethics, Applied Ethics, etc.) to compose a 2-page letter to your local Congressman/Congresswoman either in support of or opposition to Conscience and Religious Freedom. This should not be opinion (e.g., avoid “I think” in your paper), but a supported analysis. Your letter should address the following:

  1. Effectiveness or ineffectiveness of Conscience and Religious Freedom to the population that you as a healthcare professional serve.
  2. Rationale for your support/opposition.
  3. Ethical principles that support your position and supporting rationale (why).
  4. Suggestions or recommendations.

Note: You are not graded on your support or opposition, but rather your critical thinking skills in supporting your position, and application of ethical principles. You may also think about referencing pivotal Supreme Court decisions as well (review background cases and supporting information in the Module 1 Background).

Mod 1 Discussion Post 2

Formulate one new comment of your own. It must be a logical and thoughtful response that synthesizes the comments of at least 3 classmates into one comment. Be sure to synthesize; do not simply reply to each of the 3 classmates.

1. One of the characteristics of health care is the distinction between activities that are directed at keeping people healthy and activities directed at restoring health once a disease or injury occurs.  Public health’s focus is keeping the population healthy.  This involves making predictors regarding the environment.  For example, making sure water supplies and restaurants and food are safe and in the provision of preventive health services.  For example, smoking cessation, eating well, exercising and reduction of stress.  Once someone becomes sick, the medical sector takes priority and provides a wide variety of services and interventions to restore health.  Whether in the public health sector or in the medical sector, access is important.  Good website for access to health care:  http://www.rand.org/pubs/technical_reports/TR847.html

2. Many of you have discussed quality as one of the characteristics that have a significant impact on health care delivery.  The Affordable Care Act emphasizes value-based health care where the payment of services will be based on the provision of effective, efficient, and high quality practice.  Health care professionals will have to demonstrate the provision of high quality services and the attainment of Medicare recognized patient outcomes (rehospitalization, community discharge) in order to be reimbursed for services.

3. The two most important characteristics and components on the healthcare delivery system, is no central governing agency and little integration and coordination, and technology driven delivery system focusing on acute care. The first component is important because it provides flexibility of needed services, that is recommended per demand and location. Since the U.S. system is not centrally controlled, this could lead to a lot of money being saved. It is clear that this component benefits both the people, healthcare professionals, and the government. The second component is important if we are to always look for improved health services for our patients. Technology benefits people in many ways and also gives the patients the benefit of the doubt, that “innovations represent the best care” (Shi, Singh, 2017). Improved technology in an acute care setting would increase efficient and effective care for the patients, allowing medical professionals job to be easier.
