Discussion Question 2

Identify at least two modes of communication you have used for the elderly in your clinical practice. State what modes of communication were effective and which modes were challenging. Explain why.

Modes of Communication Used for The Elderly Clinical Practice

Two of the communication methods I use for older people in my clinical practice are listening and attending as well as non-verbal communication. Unequivocally, some people do not consider ” listening’” as a “communication.” For them, it seems strange that part of communication includes tranquility. However, listening is essential for excellent communication and is particularly crucial for one as a health care worker. I work closely with more elderly patients and often reveal vital things to me. In fact, some may prefer to use me instead of staff writing about what they feel or things that stress them because they need to know and trust me.

In addition, nonverbal communication is regularly represented by “body language’. Body language speaks volumes about the benefits and commitment of people in their communication. Despite the fact that people say the right things, the message can be lost if the body language suggests thinking of something completely different. The nonverbal communication of individuals speaks volumes about their benefit and commitment to the communication they have. It is essential that their posture, facial expression, outward appearance, and touch match the words they say (Standring, 2015).

Both methods were effective communication modes for me. This is because when listening and attending to the patients, I was able to understand the patients and treat them as per their needs. When it comes to body language as a non-verbal communication mode, I used different aspects such as body posture, eye contact, facial expression as well as touch. With a proper body posture and eye contact, the elderly people will feel conformable and trust the clinical officer so that they can get treated. Approaching them with a smile, a body language that shows that as a clinical officer, one is ready to help them, they will communicate their problem clearly, and that will help in treating them well (Ganasegeran et al., 2017).

Professor question to my assignment:

Please elaborate on what exactly you mean by “listening and attending”.

Global Events Paper

Write a 5–6 page, APA-formatted report that explains the responses to a global event, how issues of race, class, and gender may have affected the response, and the role of international and altruistic organizations in providing health care services related to the event. Describe barriers to receiving health care services related to the event, and explain the role of the professional nurse in providing health care services related to the global event.

Preparation

Suppose that within your health care organization there is no formal process or structure for health care professionals to volunteer time and services in times of global need. You would like to develop a proposal for establishing a process that would allow nurses and other health care professionals to secure time off to work with a specific worldwide organization, to provide health care services during global events. As part of the proposal, you would need to provide background research to support your request.

Conduct background research on either one of the following to support the proposal you would develop:

  • Choose one worldwide epidemic, such as the 2009 flu pandemic, 2009 mumps outbreak, 2012 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus outbreak, the recent Ebola virus epidemic, or another epidemic. Research articles that focus on how the initial outbreak was handled; the role of social attitudes and issues of race, class, and gender in responding to the outbreak; barriers to people receiving proper health care; and the role of nursing in providing health care services related to the epidemic.
  • Choose one natural disaster, such as the earthquakes in Haiti, Pakistan, or Nepal; Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar; the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, or any other natural disaster that brought a worldwide response. Research articles that focus on the initial response to the disaster; the role of social attitudes and issues of race, class, and gender in responding to the disaster; barriers to survivors receiving health care; and the role of nursing in providing health care services related to the disaster.

Requirements

For this assessment, develop background research that would support a proposal for an organizational process allowing health care professionals to volunteer time and services when global events happen. First, identify the global event you will be using in your research, and then:

  • Explain how the local and national (meaning the nation in which the event took place) communities responded to the event. Who responded? How long did the first response take? How did health care providers respond?
  • Explain how social attitudes, as well as issues of race, class, gender, or other factors may have influenced the response to the event. Be sure you consider not only the response of the home country, but the global response as well.
  • Describe barriers to health care services for the people impacted by the event. Some barriers may be obvious, and other barriers less obvious; try to consider multiple aspects.
  • Explain the role of international health organizations and altruistic organizations in providing health care services related to the global event.
  • Explain the role of the professional nurse in providing health care services related to the global event. Consider scope of practice when working professionally out of one’s area of license—either nationally or globally.

Additional Requirements

Complete your assessment using the following specifications:

  • Title page and reference page.
  • Number of pages: 5–6 (not  including the title and reference pages).
  • At least 4 current scholarly or professional resources.
  • APA format for the entire document, including citations and references.

Discuss your own philosophy of aging. When do you think a person becomes elderly? What do you think of older people? Are they active, senile, debilitated, etc.? Give a description of an elderly person that you know.

Discussing my own philosophy of aging. It really changes with each year I get older I used to think 31’s was old now I’m 35 it doesn’t seem so old yesterday was my birthday, I see myself as young feeling most days I have noticed more aches with aging and pregnancy and I feel I’m young acting anyways, my husband jokingly says otherwise and my son told me yesterday, I can’t believe your still a teenager at 35, I joked with him that I was a teenager and I said I know me either. So, at this time in my life I feel elderly to me is 65 and older like at retirement age. Also, though it varies in my mind  my mom is 73 but doesn’t seem elderly at all, she is very active and seems to have more energy than me.  My grandma is 103 and  has very sharp mind, a better memory than myself, she still walks with a rolling walker, my aunt lives with her and has since she was in her 80’s and cooks for her, her vision and hearing has gotten worse with aging, she will complain about some aches, which I think she has deserved the right to do, but really she is, I believe in  superb condition to be her age this August 6th she will be 104. I love listening to her stories and she loves talking. Age to me has just become a number. How you act, feel, and  take care of your body can really can impact your aging. In the ICU I’ve seen drugs age people in there 31’s and 40’s and make them look twice their age and if it doesn’t kill them it really effects their health and has a impact on their family. I try and keep a open mind no two people  are alike even if they are in the same age category. As it talks about in the text I have found myself believing  certain things aren’t achievable because of a person’s age. As the text says:

“Promoting wellness in older adults is an ideal; however, nurses may not believe it is achievable in practice because of barriers such as the following:

  • Older adults may be pessimistic about their ability to improve their health and functioning.
  • Survival needs and a multitude of health problems may take precedence over the “luxury” of being able to focus on wellness and quality of life.
  • Despite the increasing emphasis on wellness and health promotion, health care environments focus more on treating diseases than on preventing illness and addressing whole-person needs.
  • Often older adults and health care providers mistakenly attribute symptoms to aging rather than identify and address the contributing factors that are reversible and treatable.
  • Health care providers may not believe that older adults are capable of learning and implementing health-promoting behaviors that are inherent in wellness-oriented care” (Miller).

So, it just really all depends on the person to me some age better and are able to take care of themselves, and some don’t, it may not necessarily be their fault they may have a debilitating disease that they cannot help, but one thing is for sure we all age if we are still here on earth and I just hope we all can age well, and make the most out of this life we are given.

Question 1

Watch at least 60 minutes of TV, focusing on the depiction of older adults. Analyze and discuss TV programming in the context of at least two of the following:

  • Portrayal of elderly characters
  • Intergenerational themes
  • Conflict in relation to the older population
  • Aging stereotypes or myths
  • Cultural diversity in relation to quality of care

your answer

The Portrayal of Elderly Characters

On television, today, if a character goes crazy, makes extravagant comments to a person of the opposite sex or is intrigued by fundamental things, this character will probably have silver hair. In one way or another, the divine beings of television have chosen disgusting, inappropriate or idiotic actors for old characters. Or again, all three. See, for example, what they did with poor Margo Martindale, an award-winning Emmy artist named Tony. Currently plays the mother of the character of Will Arnett in the parody of CBS “The Millers.” A complete secondary plot at the beginning of the settlement was worked around his belly, explicitly gas. In this equivalent scene, Beau Bridges, another Emmy champion who plays his other important role, is not apt to use a wireless phone properly (The Millers First Look, 2013).

Intergenerational Themes

Located on a sugarcane ranch in Louisiana, Ava DuVernay’s Queen’s Sugar is a multigenerational epic drama that American television has never been able to organize. The fact that it takes into account so many elements in its reports, including class and intergenerational conflicts, dynamic and distant prejudices, government laws and directives and even the effect of the atmosphere and financial changes, is much more than subtle friction of agreements. Televisions are full of convincing and beautiful characters on the screen, who are also the main characters are Charley Bordelon (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), a rich woman who leaves Los Angeles with her teenage son to make another life; Nova Bordelon (Rutina Wesley), writer and extremist of New Orleans; and his brother Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe), a single father with a proven track record in the world of work, who is trying to raise a child abandoned by a crazy drug mother. Nothing in the program moves as one would expect, and the emphasis on aerial and forced visual narration (with the confidence of female leaders) separates it further from other families at different times (Queen Sugar, 2016).

professor question to post:

How representative of elderly people do you believe this TV show really is?

Write a 5–6 page, APA-formatted report that explains the responses to a  global event, how issues of race, class, and gender may have affected  the response, and the role of international and altruistic organizations  in providing health care services related to the event. Describe  barriers to receiving health care services related to the event, and  explain the role of the professional nurse in providing health care  services related to the global event.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), natural disasters  kill approximately 90,000 people and impact another 160 million people  every year (2015). Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis,  hurricanes, and wildfires not only have an immediate impact on those who  live in and around the affected area, they also often have a  longer-term effect on the health and well-being of those impacted.  Developing countries are frequently unable to respond to natural  disasters effectively and efficiently because they lack resources,  infrastructure, and disaster-preparedness systems.

Poor health care systems in developing countries also make these  countries more vulnerable to epidemics such as the recent outbreak of  Ebola in Chad, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. According to a report  from Save the Children (2015), some developing countries have less than  one health care worker for every 2,000 people. Other diseases such as  malaria and pneumonia account for as many as 17,000 child deaths every  day (Save the Children, 2015).

Nurses can provide critical skills during times of global events.  Whether by volunteering directly at the site of the event or by  recruiting, screening, and training other professional nurses behind the  scenes, nurses are crucial to global relief efforts.

Discuss your own philosophy of aging. When do you think a person becomes elderly? What do you think of older people? Are they active, senile, debilitated, etc.? Give a description of an elderly person that you know.

Older adulthood is an identity that carries significant stigma, and individuals become increasingly closer to assuming this stigmatized identity as they age. When people become older adults, they could view themselves as becoming part of a group to which they have held negative attitudes toward their whole life (Chopik, Bremner, Johnson & Giasson ,2018). I have seen myself doing the same thing, identify myself as old and try to act like it as the society defines it. However, I really think aging is how we perceive it to be. I have my parents for instance, going on 78 and 88 years of age, I find them aging gracefully, embracing their age transition. Although affected by chronic diseases, I found both of them to be very resilient, powering forward with their life. It always amazes my friends and other family members  to see how active my elderly parents  are.  My mom loves to cook ,therefore cooking everyday keep her going. My dad on the other hand who survived stroke twice, that left him with hearing deficit is continuously striving to stay active, he is on top of his health-related decision, checking his blood pressure every day, he is always reading ,nurturing his mind. Overall, my parents make me believe that age is just a number, someone could be of old age but still be young at heart. Becoming elderly I believe is when one is no longer able to function physically and cognitively  while aging . Older people are wise people to be around with all the life experiences they have to share.
