English Composition 18743693

Point of View, Character, and Theme

By the due date assigned, post your response of at least 150-200 words to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmates’ submissions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will assign 3-5 short stories for the class to read and discuss this week. Check the Week 4 Announcement for a list of the assigned stories. You must choose one of these stories to earn credit on the assignment.

Prompt:

Select one of the stories assigned by your instructor, and develop a response to the following:

  • Identify the point of view used in the narration of the story.
  • Provide a specific example from the story to illustrate your argument.
  • Discuss how this perspective affects your reading and interpretation of the story.
  • Consider how a different type of narration might alter the effect of the story.

Point of view refers to the perspective from which the story is narrated.

  • First person: In first person, the story is told from the perspective of the narrator, using first-person pronouns. (“We are driving off the bridge!” I screamed.)
  • Second person: This is not commonly used. In second person, the narrator addresses the reader as “you,” which gives the audience the feeling that they are a part of the story. (Example: As you drive off the bridge, you scream, but no one hears you.)
  • Third person: The story is told using third-person pronouns (“The car is driving off the bridge!” he shouted), and the narrator is either godlike in the ability to see and know everything (third-person omniscient) or not all-knowing with knowledge limited to the perspective of only one character (third-person limited).

Tips

Remember to provide evidence for your claims in the form of quoted passages from the story. Quotations, paraphrases, and summaries should be cited according to APA rules of style, including in-text and reference citations. Quoted material should not exceed 25% of the document.

Check grammar and spelling before posting.

Your replies to classmates should be at least a paragraph in length and made with an eye to expand, clarify, defend, and/or refine their thoughts. Consider asking questions to further meaningful conversation. Participation must be completed by the end of the week to earn credit.

Post directly to the discussion; do not attach a document.

Notes for Argument 3:

Be careful! We are not writing the body paragraphs in order. Look at where you should be for Week 6.

image 2.jpeg

Start by writing the topic sentence for Argument paragraph 3. Since Argument paragraph 2 is on top of the Argument 3 paragraph, you need to write an across paragraph transition that identifies the relationship between the two paragraphs. Since my Argument 3 paragraph is simply adding a new support paragraph for the essay’s overall argument, then I choose an across paragraph transition of addition- “…not only ___ but also…”

Image 4.jpeg

Check out the the text that is highlighted in yellow. Notice how “poor hours” is the controlling idea of Argument paragraph 2 and “heavy workload” is the controlling idea of Argument paragraph 3. Also, notice the use of “not only…but also…” to hold the two ideas together.

Image 8.jpeg

In the above image, notice that my plan is to write three sentences for each supporting detail. I like to do this to make sure my thoughts are balanced. Otherwise, I may write more about one supporting detail, making it appear that it is more important or that I don’t know much about another supporting detail.

In the below example, you have the completed Argument 3 paragraph, although I am missing a source citation 🙁

Image 9.jpeg

Now it is time to try your own Argument 3 paragraph. There are a few things to remember:

– start with an across paragraph transition

– create a strong topic sentence that uses a controlling idea

– identify 3 parts of the specific argument and write 3 sentences for each

– use within paragraph transitions to move from one supporting detail to the next

– finish with a concluding statement

Week 2: Assignment 2.1: Problem and Solution Paragraphs

STEP 1: Choose a topic within your profession. Make sure the topic you choose targets a problem that you know how to solve (e.g., Poor patient care, long shifts, inadequate gear, outdated philosophy, underpaid employees, etc.)

STEP 2: Divide your topic into 2 categories: problem and solution.

STEP 3: Create a thesis statement and place it at the top of the essay.

STEP 4: Write one problem and one solution paragraph beneath the thesis. (You do not need to write an introduction and conclusion for this essay. We are only thinking about the thesis statement and body paragraphs at this time.)

English Composition Essay 19417245

How to Write the Introduction 1. Write the hook. The hook must include a metaphor word. What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things. For example, I’m drowning in homework. 2. Use the S.O.A.P.S.Tone acronym to guide you through the middle of the introduction paragraph. 3. Thesis/Claim In one sentence, use strong language to express the purpose of your argument. Use an implicit thesis. Since the first paragraph is a counterargument, start the thesis sentence with that information. Example Thesis: Though not all people agree, it is evident that nursing facilities must treat LPNs better, because these employees are the most needed. How to Write the Conclusion 1. Write the telegraphic sentence. Show your concluding thought in a short sentence. Thus technique helps capture the readers’ attention. 2. Point-by-point method Look at your body paragraphs- counterargument, argument 1, argument 2, and argument 3- and write one sentence for each body paragraph. These sentences should be in a positive tone and they should remind the reader of the paragraph’s purpose. 3. Restate the thesis/claim. Using the explicit thesis statement structure, restate the thesis/claim. 4. Wrap the hook. Refer back to the metaphor word you used in the hook (introduction). Write the final sentence of the essay using a word related to the metaphor word you opened the essay with. • The conclusion should have 7 sentences. • There is no need to cite sources in the introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

2. Reflecting on the four modules completed this session, provide suggestions and advice to those taking this course in subsequent sessions. What would you have done differently a second time around?
