Marcia Stapleton    2 posts   Re: Topic 10 DQ 2  Evidence based practice (EBP) is a large key to improving patient outcomes and therefore is an essential component of the BSN prepared nurse.As nurses, if we strive for improving the capacity for evidence based care in our facilities, we will make significant strides in achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.We must, continue to look outside our current practice to seek better practices for our patients (Halm, 2010).  In continuing to integrate EBP into my personal work environment, two ways would be through my role as a clinical nurse leader and through exemplifying a culture of learning and valuing applied research to the everyday routines of practice.Working as a nurse supervisor, I have a role as a clinical nurse leader.This role includes working with policies, workflows and new ways of doing things.Clinical nurse leaders support EBP in all of these roles by always asking the question “What is best practice?” Clinical nurse leaders also can assist in directing other nurses to data bases available to look into EBP research.In our facility, we have Up to Date embedded into our electronic medical record, which gives us quick access to EBP. Asking the “What is best practice?” question leads nursing into looking for EBP research to support the practices they are working with and exemplifies EBP as a culture.  Two obstacles that challenge the ability to integrate EBP into a work environment include time to read and implement new research and support from other staff (Halm, 2010). Reading and implementing EBP research takes time. Some ideas for overcoming this barrier are allowing BSN staff to have a certain number of hours allotted each month to EBP. The concept of EBP teams is awesome and seems like a great idea to overcome both of these barriers (Halm, 2010). If a facility could give these EBP teams allotted time each month to pursue a EBP project relevant to their practice this would overcome the barrier of time. Maybe we could have EBP committees a requirement for all nursing. From Medicine Men before Christianity began to today, there has been much change.  There are similarities of past nursing practice to present, but the scope of practice has changed (Spector, 2004), (Chapter 2 History of Professional Nursing by Stacey Whitney, 2018).  Key leaders in this change would start with Florence Nightingale in 1837, where she began the change in a hospital in Turkey (Cohen, 1984).  There she and her nurses took care of the wounded soldiers in unsanitary conditions.  She felt a change in environment was needed in order to decrease the death rate of infections.  It was because she took the leadership role to request a change and formed research and data analysis to convince those that could help her implement the environmental change (Cohen, 1984).  She then wrote a book of her experiences and founded a school in London in 1859, called the Nightingale Training School for Nurses (Cohen, 1984).  In 1867-1940, Mary Brewster and Lillian Wald founded a Visiting Service of New York and the Henry Street Settlement House.  The Settlement House was where they cared for poor immigrants.  Lillian Wald also helped student absenteeism in New York Schools due to sickness, to decrease by having one of her nurses, Lina Rogers, to be responsible for the care of the poor sick children in their homes so that they may return to school.  With nursing services needed in the American Civil War (1821-1912), Clara Barton volunteered and became the founder of the American Red Cross.  With the difference she made in the military, military officials saw the need and convinced Congress to allow trained female nurses to be members of the military.  It was in (1862-1919) that Jane Delano founded the American Red Cross Nursing Service (Sarnecky, 1999).  As the advancement of nursing continued, the need for professional nursing education was recognized during the Civil War.  Linda Richards became the first graduate as a professional trained American nurse.  By the early 1913, Nurse training programs was on the rise in the United States and Japan where Linda Richards began nurse training programs (Faison, 2012).

This history is the reason for the advancement of nursing practice.  With research and evidence of conditions and needs to ensure quality care of patients, and the foundation of focus on health promotion, disease prevention, and risk reduction. Nursing practice has taken this foundation and moved forward with understanding the importance of continuing education, the use of technology, and the importance of continuing research for the purpose of quality care and future knowledge of even better ways to meet the needs of the patients and ensure positive outcomes.

The Florida Board of Nursing regulate health care as the board and the interaction with other nursing affiliated groups in Florida, as well as the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the organization that improves the quality of health care in American territories. The standards should be used in conjunction with the scope and limits it establishes. Nurses must practice within these standards to ensure better intervention. These scopes of practices are used as guidelines for all specialties in nursing.

The nursing process as Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation, allow collect data, validate the diagnostics, planning the patient care, implement the appropriate intervention, evaluate the intervention in the case that need be changed has to follow the standards stablished.

Each one of these regulations allows to maintain in each of the areas the highest quality of services, for example maintaining in the long term care of a patient in the comfort of his home, teaching the families, and caregivers sometimes to provide the care Within those standards.
