The careful collection of evidence is the first job of every medical practitioner, not least the nurse, who has the most extensive and intimate contact with the patient. However, it does not stop with the nurse. Whatever your role – social worker, hospital administration, human services – whether your problem is the allocation of scarce resources, where to add or cut staff, or the treatment plan for a patient, you will need to present and defend your position in a clearly structured argument

For this discussion, address the following:

• Explain how applying the methods of analyzing an argument can help you make and win your point.
• As you collect and prepare to present your evidence-based argument, how might diagramming your findings be helpful in clearly and accurately conveying your findings?
• Provide an example of how you might diagram your findings.

Students are to select a topic from your readings addressing a specific disease (see list below) and pharmacological treatment used to manage the disease process. Write a 300- 500 words discussion that describes the pathophysiology of the disease in detail, listing at least two (2) nursing diagnoses and current treatment for the disease for your initial posting.  

Topics: 

• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• A minimum of two references are required and one reference must be an original research article.  The two current textbooks can be used as one of your references but must use a Scholarly Journal Article or online peer-reviewed journal. For your two response posts to your peers, requires only one reference. 

Your initial Post and two response post to your peers cannot be on the same day.  For example: if you post your initial post on Wednesday, your response post will have to be on Thursday.  You are allowed to post both response post to your peers on the same day. 

Online sources like Wikipedia cannot be used as a reference.  

Reference is to be cited in APA style.

Deductive arguments are top-down, working from general principles to specific cases. Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, is bottom-up, working from specific observations and looking for patterns that lead to a general conclusion. Your career path in healthcare and health-related fields will present many problems that will require critical reasoning. Think about potential issues or even issues you have already encountered. Determine what type of critical reasoning – inductive or deductive – best suits the situation – or do you need both? If you are short on ideas, use one of these scenarios as a starting point:

• Suppose you are on a committee that has to decide whether to cut nursing staff or social services staff. How would you approach the problem?
• Suppose your hospital suddenly sees an enormous increase in emergency room patients, and you are on a committee to investigate the problem and relieve pressure on the ER. How would you approach the problem?
