PART1/an

With a society that is so diverse in its own nature, issues pertaining to cultural diversity are bound to occur in the process of team management and leadership. Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about cultural diversity. Based on your research and understanding, answer the following questions:

· How does having members of different cultures on a team affect the team’s performance?

· How would you incorporate a person from a culture of your choice into your team, keeping in mind communication differences within your and the chosen culture?

Part 2

Understanding cultural diversity is extremely important specially leaving in Florida. According to a research “As the United States population becomes more diverse and camps employ more international staff, the issue of communicating and interacting effectively with people from other cultures becomes more important” (American Camp Association, 2017). Nurses get to work with many different cultures so it is extremely important that we get learn about different cultures types so we can provide the best care possible.

· How does having members of different cultures on a team affect the team’s performance?

Nurses also get to work with people from other cultures backgrounds which can definitely make a big impact on team performance. The biggest problem in this case will be language barrier which can definitely reduce the effectiveness of communication between team members. I will like to add to the discussion that I am from a different cultural background and do I agree that language barrier can make a big impact on team performance. Several times during my career I had to experience how some team members encounter a hard time trying to understand what I said because of my hard accent. I know this is something that I must work on and I tried to do better every day in order to not to compromise my work or the safety of my patients.

· How would you incorporate a person from a culture of your choice into your team, keeping in mind communication differences within your and the chosen culture?

The biggest thing about incorporating someone from a different culture to the team is that we must understand that they must be treated the same, we must respect the choices and we must take the time to learn more about their cultures and we can positively make them feel welcome in their new environment.

With a society that is so diverse in its own nature, issues pertaining to cultural diversity are bound to occur in the process of team management and leadership. Using the ————-University Online Library or the Internet, research about cultural diversity. Based on your research and understanding, answer the following questions:

· How does having members of different cultures on a team affect the team’s performance?

· How would you incorporate a person from a culture of your choice into your team, keeping in mind communication differences within your and the chosen culture?

Part 2

In the years to come, cultural diversity will only continue to increase. I don’t think nursing is educated well enough on culture. Every day we encounter patient after patient with different beliefs, practices, etc. However, we don’t encounter a well diverse of cultures. Of course, the diversity of people will depend on where we live. For example, a New York healthcare provider will possibly experience more diversity than someone in Kentucky or North Dakota. As far as having different cultures on a team, it can be beneficial, but it can also be degrading to some team members. Those team members who are the only one, like a team of eight members, four Caucasian, two African-American, one Asian and one Middle Eastern, the Asian and Middle Eastern may grow tired of being the only resource. In addition, because the Asian and Middle Eastern are the only ones, stereotypes are bound to be formed. The bad part about nursing is that we form opinions and pass it on to our coworkers instead of being positive and forming our own opinions. “Regardless of the personal background of the nursing faculty, there are some who contend that what Campinha-Bacote (1999) terms ‘unconscious incompetence’ with regard to diversity issues is the norm”(Bednarz, Schim, & Doorenbos, 2010). Performance wise, some cultures are known to work harder, whereas Americans get the stereotype of being “lazy.” Having different cultures will add some insight and possible comfort to patients of their own or similar culture.

When incorporating someone into my team regardless of their culture, they would be treated the same. Yet, I would take the time to discover aspects of their culture and how to use that in my everyday practice. I understand how it feels to be excluded, looked at differently or judged, so communication wise we would figure out a way that works for the patients and us. “Working with diversity also can be described in terms of opportunities and pearls. Facing the challenges of a diverse student body can be seen as a learning adventure” “(Bednarz, Schim, & Doorenbos, 2010).

Part 1

My post

Hello class and Professor,

The advent of the technological era has been linked to improved patient outcomes. Most of the technologies in place are patient-centered and are aimed at improving the quality of care and service delivery. At the facility I work for, there are several technologies in place. The most recent is the point of care technology. As much as this technology is in its initial stages of implementation, the benefits have had profound effects on the operations of nursing. This technology allows nurses to access patient data such as X-rays and medication directly from the bedside. This is achieved through linked computers placed at the bedside of patients to ensure that their records can easily be accessed (Adam, 2017).

Considering that the facility has not yet adopted electronic health records, the point of care technology comes with great significance to the hospital. Through the technology, time is saved which would have otherwise been used to access the documents physically. This also allows for easier update of the patient information ensuring that they stay up to date. Point of care technology also ensures that nursing practice focuses on patient-centered care (Adam, 2017). This means that the patient is engaged in making decisions, follow-ups, and education to better their health.

The facility should, however, consider the importance of implementing electronic health records to complement the point of care technology. With electronic records coupled with this technology, nurses will have diverse alert systems such as mobile phones and tablets to ensure that they can access patient data away from the bedside.

Professor Comments and question

It is really interesting that your organization has not implemented the electronic health record (EHR). The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 provided $35 billion dollars for organizations to implement electronic health records. The incentive did not cover the entire costs of implementation to organizations, but are mandatory to meet the requirements for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System, or MIPS which will start in 2019. Do you think the organization will change to the EHR in the near future?

Part 3/another students comments and question

I found your topic very interesting. Prior to working on the PCU unit at a hospital, my last employer was just in the process of implementing EMR. They were actually using paper charts. It is interesting that some health care organizations are behind when it comes to information technology. Do you think that this could be due to cost? I think cost was the major reason as to why my prior employer was slow to using EMR.

“Culture has a powerful effect on an organization and is recognized by many as the “glue” that holds an organization together and allows it to adapt to changing environments” (Glickman, Bagget, Krubert, Peterson, & Schulman, 2007). An environment that embraces diversity and equality will help assure the standards of nursing to include cultural competency. It is important for leadership and teams to understand the practices and behaviors of other cultures. Lack of cultural competence can be a barrier to effective communication and this can flow down to patients and the families we take care of. Patients are more diverse with the increase of global travel. All levels of the nursing workforce should reflect the diversity of the population the institution serves (Coe, 2013).  “Effective nurse leaders realize that diverse groups are more likely to consider a variety of different viewpoints; therefore, they are more likely to develop better, more creative solutions to problems”

My institution is located near one of the largest military installations in the United States. We see many patients of different cultures. I also live in Texas and we see a majority of patients that represent the Mexican culture. I would most definitely incorporate someone from the Mexican culture into my team. As a nurse leader I will need to understand the cultural differences among the staff. Having someone from the Mexican culture will help the team understand the language, health practices, beliefs and customs and this will allow for more effective communication with staff, patients and families. There are many dialects spoken in Mexico. They include Spanish, English and indigenous Indian language. Verbal communication is important and understanding that someone of Mexican cultural may stand close and use a loud voice is also important. Older adults do not maintain eye contact. Knowing that this culture may show up late to appointments, it is important to stress the reasons for being on time for health care appointments. Extended family tend to be a good resource for this population (Purnell, 2014).  This person will be able to help provide insight and education to staff. Having cultural diverse team and members will help the group learn and grow and provide safe, effective, quality care to our patients
