part 1
What does it mean to be a change agent?
A change agent is a person who implements or promotes the changes in a group or an organization.in business it is usually someone who supports the new ways of doing things within an organization.
Give two examples of when you were a change agent or witnessed another nurse as a change agent
Leaders as change agent:
A leader can act as a change agent by supervising his subordinates (nurses) and by reviewing and regarding their progress, he can suggest the other ways of doing the thing and this way he can promote it in a better way and can increase the leading skills of nurses that can help the organization to transform and work more effectively.
HR manager as a change agent:
In order to bring change or to transform, a change agent should have a vast treasure of broad knowledge and the update regarding the new technology. And being the manager of HR, you can predict the potential difficulties in system or staff (nurses) and can bring a change accordingly by guiding them and increasing their potential by giving them a proper guidance in the eras where they are lacking their leadership skills.
What happened and how did the change occur?
The change usually occurs when there is some lacking either in the system or in the staff that is managing the system. Nurse leaders can bring a change by analyzing the current potential and the lacking points. It can also be done by encouraging the nurses to decide the best option to get the better outcome. Change can only occur if you share the knowledge effectively that will eventually help in enhancing their skills and will also bring a change in their attitude and behavior with other nurses. The major effective pillar in bringing the change was the cooperation with other nurse that gives rise to the remarkable leadership skills.
part 2
Have you worked to change anything on your unit? Have you seen other nurses change patient care or other functions in your organization? Please describe how the change was accomplished.

Being a change agent is a nurse that brings about change (positive change) into the work environment and helps facilitate the change. They facilitate the change by helping bring about the change in a positive manner and show why the change is necessary and what improvements it will make in their day-to-day work. I have recently been a change agent in the implementation of a new labeling process for our specimen and blood collection process. We needed to change the way we labeled our specimens to help facilitate the way they were processed at the core lab. This was going to impact our work flow in the clinic dramatically though. First, I talked with the staff about the upcoming change (which was going to cause a slight increase in work for my staff). Then, to show the impact of the change to our staff I took them to the core lab where our specimens are processed and showed them how much extra work goes into the current process vs. the new process. After seeing the decrease in work that it causes the core lab our staff was willing to take on the slight increase in work to help them out. Another example of being a change agent was when we implemented LEAN into our work flow several years ago. This was a process that done over a whole year, but over this year we had to introduce new process to the staff and help them see the LEAN way of trying things. We would get staff impute when we were drafting the process changes to help with the understand of the why the changes were important and needed to be done. With LEAN one big development was the development of standard work so that all patients were to receive the same standard of care every time they walked through the doors. We had staff help us with the processes and so when we rolled it out, they understood the importance and we all had the same goals in mind, which was the patient. I’m sure that we all are change agents everyday with small things we do, but they affect someone or somebody at some point. Change is hard but we should always remember that change is often for the good.

To be a change agent means to transform the environment that needs to be worked upon. “Being a change agent is a major function for nurses. Nurses are on the floor seeing the effects medicine and the health care system is having on the patient” (Keyes, 2017). I personally have yet to act as a change agent, but I have witnessed it in my own facility. Just recently we switched how we handle wound care. The hospital went years without a hospital-acquired wound, and sadly they had 14. Due to the reoccurring issues, a team of nurses, physicians, CNAs, CNO, etc. all gather together to come up with a plan and implement it. Included in this plan was: a turn schedule, inquiring more/better air mattresses, and wound care education for everyone. With the new plan in place, the wounds have decreased and the existing wounds have healed better as well.
In just the last month, our charting system has been updated. Our old system had many complaints, issues, too many steps and overall just wasn’t the best. The new charting is more efficient for the medical staff in that it takes less amount of time to chart. Also, steps and certain things like IVs, wounds don’t have to be re-charted unless there was a change. In addition, with the old charting, the same questions and answers would have to be re-charted when the ER admitted a patient. With the new charting in place, admissions to the floor take half the time than before. Nurses were definitely on the list when implementing this change. It took some years to come up with a plan and put it into place, but it happened and it works. We use the system probably more than anyone else and voiced our concerns for a change. Nurses “play a critical role in shaping the health care system of the future” (Keyes, 2017) someday I too hope to become a change agent.

/in Uncategorized /by developerTo be a change agent means to simply facilitate change. The change agent is responsible for translating changes into plans and executing them while also motivating and encouraging others to achieve the desire results (Nurse Leader, 2017). As a leader, I have been a change agent on many occasions. I am the responsible person for training and enforcing policy changes in the clinic. Change does not always (if ever) go over smoothly with my team. One scenario in specific stands out to me. Recent changes in leadership at our facility have created some chaos at the clinic. Annual clinical competencies have always been completed and reported in the same manner. When the new leadership came, the entire evaluation and competency program was revamped. Although this was for the better, the staff had a difficult time adjusting. After being given my guidelines, I was responsible for creating a plan to get all of the skills organized. This included making a schedule to have everyone observed and signed off, educating staff where needed, and reporting the results to my leadership. I motivated the team with words of encouragement. “How fortunate are we to work for a facility that not only keeps us accountable, but also aids in our continued education to help us be as informed as possible. We are able to provide better care to our patients because we are better educated.”
Another nurse at my facility (also a member of leadership) is often times a change agent as well. She has a way of wording things to sound pleasant when they may not be. In this way, she encourages and motivates our team to take active roles in changes around the clinic that they may otherwise shy away from. The staff are more engaged with changes when they feel involved. This makes a smoother transition for everyone.
