Course Project Milestone 2 Guidelines and Grading Rubric

Purpose

To apply lessons in quality improvement in nursing to a real-world nursing issue. This Course Project will use the Six Sigma DMAIC process.

Course Outcomes

The Course Project enables the student to meet the following Course Outcomes (COs):

· CO1: Identify the role of the BSN nurse in the quality improvement process as a member of the collaborative interprofessional team. (POs 2 and 7)

· CO2: Discuss effective processes and strategies to improve quality in nursing. (POs 2 and 8)

Points

The entire project is worth 600 points. Milestone 2 is worth 225 points of this total.

Due Date

Submit your completed NR392 Milestone 2 by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT, at the end of Week 3.

Requirements and Guidelines

1. Download the required Milestone 2 Template (Links to an external site.).

2. Save it to your computer in Microsoft Word 2013 (or later) as a .docx file with the file name: Your Last Name NR392 Milestone 2.docx.

3. Carefully review the grading rubric criteria for Milestone 2 and type directly in your saved Milestone 2 Template.

4. No scholarly references or articles are needed for the Milestone 2 assignment.

5. Complete all rubric areas for a superior Milestone 2.

6. Use instructor feedback from Milestone 1 to improve your statements regarding the nursing issue in Milestone 2.

7. Watch the video that provides a detailed overview of the requirements of Milestone 2.

Care expressed and practiced in professional nursing models provides a way of looking at the nursing role from the aspect of care. It may seem excessive to consider aspects of caring and compassion in nursing. It is evident from this weeks readings that healthcare spending in the United States far exceeds that of other countries, without resulting in significantly better population health outcomes or experiences with care.  Reduction in healthcare spending is necessary for the sustainability of the US economy.  The Affordable Care Act is a government effort to address these issues.  

Based on your reading assignments and your exploration of related websites (such as The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS] website on financing and the KFF Commission) what do you see as the key factors driving the cost of health care.  Take one of these factors and describe an action that does, or has potential to, decrease spending without reducing quality of care.  What can you as a nurse or other healthcare professional do to influence adaption of fiscally responsible practice or policy building? 1. The multiple entry points into the profession of nursing has been a debate for over fifty years.  Is the current effort to produce a more educated workforce consistent with this unresolved situation?  Please discuss any programs or incentives for nurses advancing their education at your organization.  Do you feel that advancing one’s education is valued by your organization and worthwhile?  What is the position, if any, of your professional organization on advancing nurses’ education?
2. To meaningfully address the nursing shortage, policy initiatives must take a multi-pronged approach addressing the need to expand the workforce, increase diversity among nurses, and retain experienced nurses.  What steps can be instituted at the management level to address one or more of these goals?  Can you identify any larger policy issues beyond your own organization that may address issues related to the workforce?

Effective communication is a staple of our healthcare culture.  Working with patients, peers, and interprofessional teams requires that nurses manage information and evidence toward influencing safe and positive patient outcomes.

Submit an evidence-based practice paper about cultural competency in mental health nursing. An evidence-based practice paper allows you to explore best practice and help improve client outcomes on a psychiatric unit. Your paper should describe how you, as a nurse, will include – or have included – cultural awareness in a client diagnosed with a mental illness. The person you describe could be someone in your clinical setting, someone you have worked with in the past, or a theoretical client.

Remember that culture can also include gender equality, sexual orientation, and other cultures besides race and religion – including cultures unique to one particular family. Your paper should be at least 3 pages (double-spaced, not including the title or reference pages) in APA Format and include:

• Assessment: Discuss what you would assess in regard to a client’s culture. For example, are there specific dietary requirements? Are schedule changes necessary to avoid conflicts with religious practices? Who is the spokesperson for the family? What would you assess?
• Diagnosis: List any mental health nursing diagnoses this person has or may be at risk for. Include at least one cultural diagnosis.
• Planning: What planning needs to be done to ensure the cultural and emotional safety of the client?
• Implementation: What are interventions that would ensure the safety of your client in regard to culture? Include at least two interventions. For example, if your client has religious beliefs that affect the ability to take medications, what interventions would you create to ensure the client’s safety? What can you do to make sure the client’s cultural needs are met?
• Evaluation: How will you evaluate whether your implementation was effective? Make sure the parameters are objective and measurable.
• In your summary, discuss whether any completed interventions were successful. What could be done differently in the future? If the interventions have not yet been carried out, you might discuss some institutional changes that could be made to ensure cultural safety for all clients in that setting.

Your paper should utilize proper APA guidelines and include at least three scholarly sources to support your paper. A scholarly source is a source that has been peer reviewed and has appropriate authors that are credentialed.
