Writing and Pronunciation – Including QEP Enhanced Assignment

—Urology and Obstetrics & Gynecology Departments

By the due date assigned you will write 2 reports referring to the departments of

Urology (Genitourinary System) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (Female Reproductive System). For the Urology Department, you write a 2 paragraph report and use that for the script of your Oral Report. For the Female Reproductive System, there are 2 audio clips containing spoken medical terms. See Instructions below for the special directions for this section only.

In order to earn the maximum credit for the written report you need to incorporate at least 10 medical terms for each department, using them in a manner that demonstrates your knowledge of their meaning.

  • Include the major or most common diseases or conditions seen in each department.
  • Include at least three of the principal procedures that are relevant to each department.
  • Highlight pertinent laboratory and radiological diagnostic services relevant to each department.
  • Limit your analysis of each department to two paragraphs.
  • Special Addition of QEP Assignment for Spoken Medical Terminology.
  • In addition, we have something for you auditory learners who prefer to listen for understanding. (This week only!) This only applies to the Female Reproductive Body System.
  • Instructions: click on the audio clips to hear a Healthcare Professional describing 2 patients admitted to your fictitious hospital. One is a patient with a gynecological problem, and one is a patient with an obstetric problem. There are many medical terms used. You are to identify at least 20 (10 from each patient) medical terms, and list them with correct spelling, and a definition in your own words (to verify understanding! Copying a definition can bypass the brain altogether!)  Put your list in an MS Word doc. File and place that into the Submissions Area. (This might push down your other assignments already submitted, but the files are still safely in there and retrievable by your Instructor.)

Don’t forget your references!

Medical Terminology 19048509

Seth, a thirty-eight year-old white male of Scandinavian descent, has lived his entire life in Southern Florida. He is very concerned with maintaining a “healthy” appearance. Seth is very athletic and especially enjoys surfing. He has been surfing since the age of twelve and he started making surfboards while he was in high school. After obtaining a college degree in marketing Seth decided to start his own business making surfboards and giving surfing lessons for a local resort near his home. During a routine physical examination the physician assistant that Seth sees commented on the presence and appearance of a small growth (approximately 2-cm in diameter) above Seth’s right eyebrow. This growth was shiny with a pearly border, a central ulcer and engorged surface blood vessels. The physician assistant was concerned that this might be a tumor and asked Seth a number of questions to aid in the diagnosis. Seth reported that he noticed this growth approximately six months ago but thought nothing about it since he often developed “pimples” when he was working on surfboards because of the heat and dust. Seth noticed that the growth would occasionally bleed, but he thought the bleeding most often occurred when he absently scratched above his eyebrows when he was working. Seth also reported that after bleeding the growth would “crust over” and appear to heal, but not disappear. Seth also thinks the lesion has increased in size, but he can’t be certain.

The physician assistant asks Seth to come back in two days to visit with the attending physician and encourages Seth to be sure to use sunscreen whenever possible, especially when he is surfing or teaching surfing classes. Upon returning to see the physician, Seth is told that he probably has a basal cell carcinoma. This, the physician explains, is a cancer that while not benign, rarely metastasizes and grows very slowly. This type of cancer usually occurs in areas that have the greatest exposure to the sun (i.e. the face, head, and neck). While this cancer would probably not metastasize, the physician suggests surgical removal to minimize damage to any underlying tissues and a histological examination of the excised tissue to confirm the diagnosis.

Seth is concerned that if this is indeed cancer he will have to undergo radiation and/or chemotherapy and suffer from both hair loss and nausea like his mother did when she was being treated for breast cancer 10 years ago. The physician assures Seth that these treatments are not required for basal cell carcinoma and explains that this cancer usually remains localized to the specific area of the skin and does not usually spread to other tissues, so radiation and chemotherapy would not be necessary. Seth then asks why it is necessary to remove the tumor if it will not spread and is told that while the tumor does not spread to other body areas it will continue to grow and also invade deeper layers of the skin, such as the dermis, and destroy normal tissues. Seth agrees to the procedure and schedules a follow-up appointment to discuss the results of the biopsy the following week. At the follow-up appointment, Seth is told that the lesion was indeed a basal cell carcinoma. He is told that it will be important for him to try to use both sunscreens, specifically those containing para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA, and protective clothing as much as possible to minimize the effects of the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sunlight. Seth is also told that while he should not be overly concerned, he should also pay close attention for similar lesions in the future, since a person with a single basal cell carcinoma is likely to develop additional basal cell carcinomas in the future.

Using the medical terminology learn this week as of the following questions about the case:

Identify both the primary risk factors that Seth presents with and other risk factors that may or may not be related to Seth’s case? How are benign and malignant tumors similar and different from each other?

Here are the discussion board requirements.

  • The initial discussion post must be at least 250 words of content, referencing the reading of the week, and include a scholarly source.

Week 2 Project: assignment writing and pronunciation assignment.

  1. Please note this assignment is NOT to be written as patient case studies like in our discussion forum assignments, but is a medical department report where you tell me about the medical department with at least 10 diseases or disorders per department, at least 3 different medical tests used to diagnose patients, and at least 3 different medical procedures used to treat patients. READ the directions for the assignment and grading rubric very carefully. Remember that half of the assignment points are for the audio recording of the report as well, so you must also record your report by speaking into a recording device and submit it the assignment dropbox as well.

Please look at the writing and pronunciation assignment advice/example I posted under announcements and emailed as well, so you do not have to revise the assignment.
PLEASE REFER to the following “EXAMPLE” to help give you an idea of how to write the descriptions of the other Medical departments.

PEDIATRIC CARE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT REPORT:

The pediatric department attends to mostly ambulatory patients. Our most common cases involve asthma, influenza, otitis media, constipation, appendicitis, and allergic rhinitis, in addition to various trauma cases mostly involving fractures such as simple fractures, complex fractures, and spiral fractures. Our physicians perform surgical procedures such as tonsillectomies, inguinal herniorrhaphy (inguinal hernia repairs), and appendectomies. For fractured bones, our surgeons perform surgical procedures such as external fixation, open reduction and internal fixation.

In the diagnosis of trauma cases we utilize our new CT scan and MRI facility, and we have recently added capacity to perform PET scans, which we use effectively to diagnose various early onset pediatric oncology cases such as osteoblastomas, and osteochondromas. A speciality group is being formed to diagnose and treat pediatric cardiology cases to include children with cardiac disorders such as congenital heart failure, cardiac valve abnormalities, ventricular septal defect, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and tetralogy of fallot. Some of the cardiac tests utilized to diagnose these cardiovascular disorders are ECG, echocardiogram, cardiac stress test, coronary angiography and cardiac catheterization. Recently, our pediatric department identified a chronic lead poisoning case that presented only with lead colic. It was quickly recognized by our physicians who utilized the laboratory staff, who examined the patient’s blood sample in doing a complete blood count CBC and identified the stippled red blood cells, pathognomonic of lead poisoning.

References should be listed at the end of the assignment, even our book reference, and references should be cited too in APA format with author’s last names and year like this at the end of the sentences (Little, 2017).

Also, read the grading rubric and instructions first on this assignment! Please do not submit discussion forum posts of your patient case studies for this assignment as it is not acceptable because this is a separately graded assignment.

This week’s topic  is :  The Case of the Sweaty Salesman

Michael is a 30 year old salesman, who spends approximately 4 days each week traveling to visit with customers in his region. During his routine physical, he casually mentions to his physician that he seems to be sweating more profusely than normal and mentions that most rooms that once felt comfortable are now too “hot”. He thought that it was simply due to the change in seasons and companies being slow to turn down the thermostats from the winter temperatures, however, this problem seems to persist even when he is at home. A room that his wife and children find to be comfortable causes him to sweat profusely. Michael also reports that he seems to be loosing weight even though his appetite has increased. He also complains that he has a shortened attention span and that he always wants to be moving around. Despite the fact that he feels fatigued, Michael claims to have difficulty sleeping and seems to have more frequent bowel movements, occasionally accompanied by diarrhea. The physician checks Michael’s medical history and finds that, indeed, he has lost 15 pounds since his last physical. Wanting to rule out the possibility of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the physician asks Michael questions about his sexual history and practices and finds that he is not at risk for HIV infection. Also, in checking his chart, the physician finds that Michael has a negative history for chronic illnesses, does not smoke, and has a low risk for cardiovascular disease. He does, however, have a positive family history for autoimmune diseases. His father suffers from idiopathic thrombocytopenia, his mother has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and his oldest sister was recently diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Results of Michael’s physical examination were within normal ranges with the exception of the following: he demonstrated tachycardia, loud heart sounds, and apparent cardiac arrhythmias accompanied by slight hypertension. These arrhythmias were confirmed by electrocardiogram to be supraventricular in origin. Michael’s eyeballs appeared large and protruding and his hair was fine and soft. He was also beginning to demonstrate some degree of alopecia. Michael was also observed to have palmar erythema. Palpation of the neck revealed the presence of goiter. Results of blood tests indicated elevated concentrations of thyroid hormones (thyroxin and triiodothyronine), hypercalcemia, and decreased circulating concentrations of lipids. Based on the physical characteristics and the results of the blood tests, Michael’s physician suspected that Michael was suffering from some form of hyperthyroidism and sent him to an endocrinologist to confirm the initial diagnosis.

Following the initial consultation and examination, the endocrinologist ordered tests to determine whether Michael has a hyperthyroid. The test results indicated an elevation in the concentration of thyroid hormones in the blood and the presence of thyroid-stimulating antibodies. These antibodies specifically stimulate the thyroid gland by binding with the thyroid stimulating hormone receptor located on the plasma membrane of the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. Based on these results, the endocrinologist concluded that Michael has Grave’s disease, a form of hyperthyroidism believed to be autoimmune in nature. Michael was presented with a number of possible treatment options. These included treatment with chemicals (propylthiouracil and methimazole) that decrease the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, radioisotopic destruction of the thyroid gland by the use of 131I, and surgical removal of the thyroid gland. After considering all the options, especially the possible effects of radiation on gamete development, Michael chose surgery. Following successful surgery, Michael was prescribed synthetic thyroid hormone to ensure that his body was receiving adequate thyroid hormone and was told to return within 2 months for a follow-up evaluation of circulating thyroid hormone concentrations. He was also cautioned to carefully monitor his calcium intake.

Using the the terms covered this week answer the following questions about this case:

Why would an imbalance in thyroid hormones have such a widespread effect on the body? Why was a goiter observed in Michael’s neck? Given that Michael and his wife may want to have more children, why was radioisotope, for the destruction of the thyroid gland, ruled out?
