Module 4 – SLP

HEALTH BEHAVIOR: RESEARCH FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

By now if you put together your SLP papers from Module 1 – 3, you have a program/intervention proposal to address a health behavior problem. Carefully read through your SLP papers from Modules 1 through 3.

Write an abstract (1 page in length) briefly describing your whole proposal. Be sure to use subheadings.

The following items will be assessed in particular:

  1. Describe the problem health behavior and the target population.
  2. Summary of the program goal and objectives.
  3. Briefly describe your strategies for program implementation and evaluation.
  4. Discuss what contribution the results/findings from your proposed program will make to the field of health sciences.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric. You can view it under Assessments at the top of the page. Review it before you begin working on the assignment. Your work should also follow these Assignment Expectations.

Bhe418 Reflection

 Previous  Next

For this reflective discussion:  Reflect upon two concepts that you learned in this course.

  • What are the concepts? What insight or ideas did you gain from learning each of these concepts? Were there aspects of the concepts that you would challenge?
  • What is the importance of these concepts to public health? How will you use this new wisdom in your current or future career?
  • Optional: Offer feedback on how the course and/or facilitation of the course can be improved.

Reflection is a mental process that challenges you to use critical thinking to examine the course information, analyze it carefully, make connections with previous knowledge and experience, and draw conclusions based on the resulting ideas. A well-cultivated critical thinker raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely; gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards; thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems. (Paul & Elder, 2008)

In order to earn maximum credit, the comment should be more than your opinion, and more than a quick “off the top of your head” response. Be sure to support your statements, cite sources properly, cite within the text of your comments, and list your reference(s). The response must be a minimum of 250 words.

Your specific assignment for this week is to select one type of quantitative health datum to collect from your own life. Some examples of data to collect could be:

  1. How many minutes do you spend exercising each day?
  2. What is your total daily caloric intake in calories?
  3. What is your resting heart rate in beats per minute?
  4. How many ounces of water do you drink each day?
  5. What is your estimated total caloric expenditure from exercise each day?
  6. What is your estimated daily intake of saturated fat in grams?
  7. What is your daily systolic/diastolic blood pressure?

Your Task:

  1. Choose one variable that varies measurably from day to day. Be sure to specify the units of measurement, and state how it will be gathered.
  2. Then collect at least 5 days worth of data on that one variable. For example, if your variable is how many minutes you spend exercising each day, simply record the number of minutes that you spend exercising each day during the sampling period. Be sure to save this data for use in remaining SLP assignments. The more data points that you gather during the session, the better.
  3. Describe the data you have collected and its importance in relations to individual/population’s health.

Prompt: In this activity, you’ll create an annotated bibliography by following the steps below and answering the questions as thoroughly as possible. The questions will prompt you to engage in a conversation with your sources. You will need to follow the steps below three times (for your three different sources).

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Selected sources from the Opposing Viewpoints database or the Academic Search Ultimate database.
  • • Applied the C.R.A.A.P test to the sources to determine if they are credible and reliable. (You can download a copy of The C.R.A.A.P. Test Worksheet. Remember, credible sources should score 35 points or more on the test.)

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

  1. Identify your sources, including author, title, and the database information or website.
  2. Summarize your source. (Use the template below.)
    • It seems this source is arguing ____________________. This source is using this evidence to support the argument: ____________________.
    • A counterargument for one of the provided sources could be: __________________________________.
  3. Credibility and Relevance
    • Explain the rationale for the credibility of the source by providing supporting evidence. (Use the template below.)
      • Personally, I believe the source is doing a (good job/bad job) of supporting its arguments because ____________________.
    • Explain the relevance of the source to your argument. (Use the template below.)
      • I think this source will be very helpful in supporting my argument because ________________________.

Guidelines for Submission: Your annotations must include at least three sources. Save your work in a Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Then, check your writing for errors.

Big Data Risks And Rewards 19468081

When you wake in the morning, you may reach for your cell phone to reply to a few text or email messages that you missed overnight. On your drive to work, you may stop to refuel your car. Upon your arrival, you might swipe a key card at the door to gain entrance to the facility. And before finally reaching your workstation, you may stop by the cafeteria to purchase a coffee.

From the moment you wake, you are in fact a data-generation machine. Each use of your phone, every transaction you make using a debit or credit card, even your entrance to your place of work, creates data. It begs the question: How much data do you generate each day? Many studies have been conducted on this, and the numbers are staggering: Estimates suggest that nearly 1 million bytes of data are generated every second for every person on earth.

As the volume of data increases, information professionals have looked for ways to use big data—large, complex sets of data that require specialized approaches to use effectively. Big data has the potential for significant rewards—and significant risks—to healthcare. In this Discussion, you will consider these risks and rewards.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the web article Big Data Means Big Potential, Challenges for Nurse Execs
  • Reflect on your own experience with complex health information access and management and consider potential challenges and risks you may have experienced or observed.
  • QUESTION

Post a description of at least one potential benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Then, describe at least one potential challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Propose at least one strategy you have experienced, observed, or researched that may effectively mitigate the challenges or risks of using big data you described. Be specific and provide examples.
