***I have attached the  DPI Project Milestone: 10 Strategic Points for the Prospectus, Proposal, and Direct Practice Improvement Project Assignment with the instructor’s corrections/comments. This needs to be revised as well meeting the instructor’s expectations.

Details:

Empirical research is the foundation of scholarly research and scholarly writing. An empirical article is defined as one that reports actual results of a research study. An empirical article includes a description of the study, an introduction, a research question, an explanation of the study’s methodology, a presentation of the results of the study, and a conclusion that discusses the results and suggests topics for further study.

As you search the library for scholarly research, you should limit your search to identify empirical articles. (You can use the “Empirical Research Checklist” from DNP-801 to assist in this determination.) After finding an empirical study, begin to assess the validity of the conclusion by determining if the conclusion answers the proposed research question and if the methodology is appropriate.

As you move forward in your doctoral journey, you will read research papers that will require you to assess the validity of the studies in question. To accomplish this, qualitative assessments about the research must be made by comparing, contrasting, and synthesizing what the research says.

In this assignment, you will continue to develop the skill of writing, by reviewing 15 research articles associated with your chosen topic and using the content to identify at least five major concepts and subthemes related to your topic.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of this assignment:

  • Use      the “Empirical Research Checklist” to assist in the      determination of empirical articles.
  • Use      the “Research Article Chart” to provide a summary review of each      component of your assignment.
  • Doctoral      learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The      APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • This      assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the      assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful      completion.
  • You      are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the      directions in the Student Success Center.

Directions:

Part 1: Selection of 15 Articles

Select 15 empirical articles related to your PICOT question. Use the “Empirical Research Checklist” worksheet to ensure that each article you select meets all of the established criteria. At least one article must demonstrate a quantitative methodology.

Clinical/PICOT Question:

In Patients > 65 years of age with central line catheters, how does staff training of key personnel and reinforcement of central line catheter hub hygiene after its insertion, along with the apt cleansing of the insertion site, reduce the incidence of CLABSIs (Central Line Associated Blood-stream Infections) at a level two trauma facility compared to standard care over a one-month period?

P: Patients > 65 years of age with a central line

I: Staff training and reinforcement of central catheter, hub hygiene

C: Compared to standard care

O: Reduce the incidence of CLABSIs (Central Line Associated Blood-stream Infections)

T: A period of one-month

Part 2: Research Article Chart

Using the articles acquired in Part 1, provide a summary review of each component using the “Research Article Chart” template.

Part 3: Synthesis of Research Studies

Based upon your review of the 15 research articles, identify at least five major concepts that relate to your project topic, and three subthemes related to each concept.

Using the information from the completed “Research Article Chart,” and the major concepts and subthemes you have identified, write a 2,000-3,000 word paper that synthesizes the content of the 15 research studies.

Summarize each major concept and focus on providing a detailed synthesis of the three identified subthemes that support that concept by addressing the following.

  1. Introduction      of the identified subtheme
  2. Summary      of the research questions posed by the studies
  3. Summary      of the sample populations used
  4. Summary      of the limitations of the studies
  5. Summary      of the conclusion and recommendations for further research

Inventory Assignment

Creating an Interest Inventory

In Unit Two, which begins next week, you will write an argumentative research paper; basically, this means that you will have to use your own reasoning and evidence from sources to develop an argument.  All of the work you have done in Unit One should have prepared you for this next paper.  You will follow the same pattern of conversation with sources, but you’ll have to include several sources in that conversation.

This time around, though, you will choose your own topic!  And that’s what the interest inventory is for.  Let’s get started.

In a document, create several headings for categories of topics: CONTROVERSIES, HISTORY, SPORTS, TECHNOLOGY, EDUCATION, TRENDS, FASHION, CAREERS, POLITICS, PHILOSOPHY, RELIGION, HOBBIES/GAMES, ETC..

Under each heading (and you don’t have to use all of the headings, but try for at least eight), list some topics in that area that interest you.  Keep in mind that the research paper must make an argument, so your topic should be something that can be debated.  For instance, you might want to write about nursing as a career, but within that topic you would need to find something arguable, such as whether or not an extra year should be added to all nursing qualification courses to improve overall health care.

Give yourself 20 minutes to sit with these headings and brainstorm lists of topics.  I’d love to see you generate five ideas for eight categories!  That’s 80 potential topics (see, English teachers CAN do math)!

Once you have finished your list, take some time to review it; then, highlight the three topics that interest you most.

Finally, after careful consideration, choose the ONE topic you are most interested in.  Once you have that topic, you should pose a question about it that you’d like to pursue in your research paper.  That question is called a research question, and it should start with WHY or SHOULD.  For instance, maybe your favorite topic is “prayer in school.” A valid research question would be, “SHOULD public schools allow prayer in the classroom?” This would lead to an argumentative paper because you would have to support your answer to that question.  Avoid “what” questions; they lead to reports instead of arguments.  “How” questions are tricky:  sometimes, they lead to arguments, but often they lead to reports.

Type your chosen topic and research question at the bottom of the inventory, and turn it in as Assignment #3.

Here is an example of what I’m asking you to do:interest_inventory.png

I have updated my policy about research topics to include the following list of topics that I will not allow you to write about. Here is the list of topics that you many not choose to write about:

Corporal Punishment

Abortion

School Uniforms

Church Membership and/or Attendance

Standardized Testing

Legalization of Prostitution

Conspiracy Theories (Illuminati, 9/11, etc.)

Investment Decision

In 1 paragraph, answer questions below:

An independent orthopedic clinic is considering expanding by opening a small surgery center instead of renting space in a local hospital. They ask their financial department (you) for methods of calculating whether or not they should consider the project. They are unfamiliar with the methods and just want an understanding of how they work.

Choose the capital investment decision method (Payback, Net Present Value, or Internal Rate of Return) that you think would work the best for this situation. How would you describe the method so that the doctors can understand the way it works? What outcome would they need to achieve in order to go ahead with the project?

It was then decided that a new imaging machine needed to be purchased as part of the project. What financial and other factors do you think they need to consider when making a decision?

Scenario for Week 7 Case:

You are a PMHNP working in a large intercity hospital. You receive a call from the answering service informing you that a “stat” consult has been ordered by one of the hospitalists in the ICU. Upon arriving in the ICU, you learn that your consult is a 14 year old male who overdosed on approximately 50 Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) tablets in an apparent suicide attempt. At the scene, a suicide note was found indicating that he wanted to die because his girlfriend’s parents felt that their daughter was too young to be “dating.” The client stated in the suicide note that he could not “live without her” and decided to take his own life. Although he has been medically stabilized and admitted to the ICU, he has been refusing to talk with the doctors or nurses. The hospital staff was finally able to get in touch with the clients parents (using contact information retrieved from the 14 year old’s cell phone). Unbeknown to the hospital staff, the parents are divorced, and both showed up at the hospital at approximately the same time, each offering their own perspectives on what ought to be done. The client’s father is demanding that the client be hospitalized because of the suicide, but his mother points out that he does not have “physical custody” of the child. The client’s mother demands that the client be discharged to home with her stating that her son’s actions were nothing more than a “stunt” and “an attempt at manipulating the situation that he didn’t like.” The client’s mother then becomes “nasty” and informs you that she works as a member of the clerical staff for the state board of nursing, and if you fail to discharge her child “right now” she will make you “sorry.” How would you proceed?

To Prepare for this Practicum:

  • Review the Learning Resources concerning voluntary and involuntary commitment.
  • Read the Week 7 Scenario in your Learning Resources.
  • Research your state’s laws concerning voluntary and involuntary commitment.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Based on the scenario, would you recommend that the client be voluntarily committed? Why or why not?
  • Based on the laws in your state, would the client be eligible for involuntary commitment? Explain why or why not.
  • Did understanding the state laws confirm or challenge your initial recommendation regarding involuntarily committing the client? Explain.
  • If the client were not eligible for involuntary commitment, explain what actions you may be able to take to support the parents for or against voluntary commitment.
  • If the client were not eligible for involuntary commitment, explain what initial actions you may be able to take to begin treating the client.
