Case Study Using the Deontological Decision-Making Process
Because finding affordable housing was difficult, 26-year-old Terry White lived with her 6-month-old son, Tommy, and his father, Billy Smith, in a one room of the landlord’s house. Ms. White was morbidly obese and was diagnosed with bipolar disease, Mr. Smith had served time for drug dealing and was out on parole and staying straight. Neither has finished high school. Mr. Smith’s past drug use had rendered him unable to do much manual labor because of heart damage, but on occasion, he would work in construction to support the family.
Public health nurse Jim Lewis had received a referral on Tommy when he was diagnosed with failure to thrive, (FTT) 2 months earlier, Ms. White (who had had two children removed from her custody by Child Protective Services (CPS) in the past) and Mr. Smith seemed to adore their baby so much so that Ms. White would hold the baby all day long. In the past 2 months, the nurse had taught Ms. White about infant nutrient and gotten her enrolled in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program; as a result, Tommy had increased his rate of physical growth and was above the 5% level of his growth percentile. Yet he was not meeting his gross motor milestones per Denver Developmental Screening Test 11 (DDST111) testing. Mr. Lewis thought that Tommy was not allowed to play on the floor enough to progress in sitting, pushing his shoulders up, or crawling. Most of their small room was taken up with the bed and the boxes that stored their belongings. There wasn’t really space for “tummy time” or play. When not in the room, the family would take the bus to a discount store and spend the day walking around to get a change of scene.
One week Ms. White told the nurse she was not taking her medications for bipolar disease anymore because they caused her to gain weight. The next week she confided that Mr. Smith had had a “dirty” urine specimen check and would have to return to prison in the near future. The following week Mr. Lewis found the family living in a run-down motel because they were evictee after a disagreement with the landlord. Ms. White was agitated, and she told the nurse that they had only $100, Mr. Smith was going to have to return to prison that week, and the motel bill was already $250. Ms. White knew she would be homeless soon without Mr. Smith’s support but refused to talk with her social worker about her needs. She asked the nurse not to tell anyone about her situation because she was afraid CPS would take Tommy from her. It was clear to Mr. Lewis that he might not know where Tommy was after they left this motel.
Directions
Using the ethical decision processes and the of code of ethics discussed in chapter 4 discuss and debate these questions.
- Considering the principle of telling the truth, what are Mr. Lewis’s professional responsibilities to Ms. White, to Tommy, and to the social worker assigned to this family?
- Using the generic ethical decision-making framework discussed in chapter 4 and consider the deontological ethical decision-making process:
a. How should Mr. Lewis respond to Ms. White’s request to not tell anyone about their situation?
b. What communication, if any should the nurse initiate with the social worker?
c. What communication, if any should the nurse initiate with others?
- Using virtue ethics:
a. What actions would you take to resolve any moral dilemma you have about the safety of Tommy in this family situation?
b. If you do not tell anyone about the possible dangers to the child, what moral principles come into play?
c. If you do tell the social worker about the situation and the child is removed from the mother, what moral principles come into play for you?
- What ethical dilemmas may you experience if you are the nurse in this case?
- How can you deal effectively with these potential dilemmas?

/in Uncategorized /by developerPlease choose one health related issue that is specific to race/class/gender, and research it from a sociological perspective. For example, why are working class Americans more likely to experience morbid obesity than upper middle-class Americans? Why are African Americans more likely to have cardiovascular diseases? Why are Black women three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts? Why is the mental illness rate disproportionately higher in the Asian American community in the United States? While some of the factors that may explain the health issues may be due to biological / genetic factors, the point of this assignment is to examine the sociological factors that may contribute to these differences. You should do some Internet research to examine this issue and develop a discussion post.

/in Uncategorized /by developerMany of the taken-for-granted ideas about the capabilities, personalities, talents, etc. of women and men have been considered innate, natural or unchangeable. Yet, gender definitions and expectations have changed continuously over the long course of history. In looking at U.S. families today, where do we see increasing equality or recognition of “sameness” between husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, and what macrosocial changes, e.g., in the labor force, in education, in the division of family labor, have encouraged these changes? What has held them back?

/in Uncategorized /by developerFor many of us, one of the most interesting and fun aspects of studying sociology is how relevant the discipline is to our everyday lives. This is even true of the methods we use to study sociology. Hardly a day goes by without reading or hearing about research that can help explain our lives: for example, we are learning that life expectancy in the U.S. is on the decline, which may seem counterintuitive. After all, we are the richest nation on earth with excellent medical care. But when we look a little deeper, we learn that for the wealthiest Americans, life expectancy is on the rise, while for those with the lowest socio-economic status (SES), it is on the decline. Since there are far more people of lower SES than the highest, the overall rate is pushed downward.
Describe a current, personal experience that is relevant to research methods. You can describe something that “passes for knowledge” that you observed at home, work, or the community; something you saw or heard in the media, or some other current event. Include a description of the information, how you think that information was created, and your own reaction to that information (to quote a scene from Freaky Friday, how does that make you feel? Do you trust that information and to what degree?).

/in Uncategorized /by developerFor this assignment, we will examine gender roles during the holidays. To begin, please take a look at the following article on the website Sociological Images, found at https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2015/11/24/doing-gender-and-making-holidays/ After reading the article, reflect on your own past Thanksgiving experiences to answer the questions, below. If you do not celebrate Thanksgiving, think of another holiday you have celebrated with your family that involves cooking and eating a lot of food.
Think of the Thanksgiving celebration you had with your family this past year, paying special attention to the gender roles associated with this holiday, in your family. What do the men do during different parts of the day and evening? How do the women spend their time? And what about the children – do the boys and girls help their family members? In what ways? Take a look at the various rituals throughout the day and think about whether they differ by gender. For instance, is the turkey carved at the dinner table, and who carves it? According to your observations, did you find any kind of gender imbalance in the preparation for this holiday? Write a one paragraph summary of your observations and analysis. As mentioned above, if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, think of another holiday you have celebrated with your family that involves cooking and eating a lot of food, and write your summary about the gender roles found there.
Entries are reflective writing in which you respond to question prompts. They should be at least 200 words long, written succinctly. Address all parts of the prompt question

/in Uncategorized /by developerReview the video interview with Prof. Alondra Nelson about her research on genetic testing. Alondra Nelson’s interview on genetic testing and race explains the difficulties individuals encounter when trying to navigate the costs and benefits of finding out who they are and where they are from. In your discussion describe at least one way in which genetic testing is complicated for African Americans. Then reflect on how and in which ways the new research into genetics force us to reconsider the question of race as a social construct. Then consider Prof. Alondra’s discussion on the complexities of genetic testing in the African American community and think about how these complexities might apply, or not, to another ethic group. For instance, consider your own ethnic heritage and how you may or may not get accurate information from genetic testing. Would you suggest that there be warning labels on commercially available genetic tests?
