Determinants Of Health 19153139

This week’s graded topics relate to the following Course Outcome (CO).

CO1: Apply principles of nursing theory to the public health system by analyzing determinants of health and the public health intervention wheel. (PO1)

What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill? Healthy People 2020 identifies five determinants of health that influence the health of individuals and populations. Healthy People 2020 describes them as “a range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018, About Determinants of Health, para. 1). Determinants fall into five categories, including (a) policy making, (b) social factors, (c) health services, (d) individual behavior, and (e) biology and genetics.

Go to the Determinants of Health link at https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Determinants-of-Health (Links to an external site.) Links to an external site., and click on each determinant to read about it.

Choose one of the five determinants other than individual behavior (as we are all aware of how individual behavior impacts health). In your post, describe this determinant and its importance.

Discuss how a community health nurse (CHN) could use one of the 17 intervention categories from the Public Health Intervention Wheel to address this determinant (Nies & McEwen, 2015).

Professor’s comment: Hello Class, please consider the following questions this week and share your responses in discussion.

  1. What changes would need to happen in the community for the determinant of health you chose to improve? How might nurses be involved in those changes?
  2. How would the actions you might take as a community health nurse be different from or similar to the actions you might take in your current nursing role?
  3. What consequences would the community face if the determinant of health you chose does not improve?
  4. How does this topic relate to one or more of the essential public health services discussed in the Nies and McEwen text?

Thanks,

Dr. Petko

Determining Sample Size 4 Dq 2

Assume you want to do a project that compares the survey results before an intervention to those after an intervention in the same sample (the same people will take both surveys). You plan to use a paired t-test to analyze your results. Using the “Determining the Appropriate Sample Size,” Topic Material, perform a sample size calculation to determine how large your sample should be. Justify your sample size calculation with citations. Discuss how your sample size may affect the validity of your study. I plan to use Qauntitative descrptive design. 1 page, APA. My topic is on  “the use of Advanced Practice Providers in triage in improving waiting times in Emergency departments”.

Develop A 3 4 Page Plan To Identify The Causes Of Organizational Conflict Explain How Conflict Affects An Organization And Select A Conflict Resolution Style To Use Explain Conflict Negotiation Strategies And Determi

Introduction

Disagreements occur because we have differences of opinions, values, and goals. Solutions to disagreements require negotiation skills. While negotiating, the parties involved have to “generate options, brainstorm ideas, give and take, and attempt to get their mutual goals met” (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 249).

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Identify variables within an organizational structure that can promote conflict.
    • Identify the factors responsible for conflict within an organization.
  • Competency 3: Apply appropriate strategies to reduce or resolve conflicts.
    • Describe a conflict resolution style appropriate for a conflict situation within an organization.
    • Explain conflict negotiation strategies appropriate for a conflict situation within an organization.
  • Competency 4: Analyze the impact of conflict on relationship building in face-to-face, virtual, cyber, and group communication.
    • Explain how conflict affects an organization.
  • Competency 5: Evaluate the outcome of proposed strategies of conflict resolution.
    • Determine the outcomes of conflict negotiation strategies for an organization.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats.
    • Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate APA format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Preparation

Use the Capella library and the Internet to research conflict negotiation strategies and conflict resolution styles. Find at least three resources to use in this assessment to support your plan.

Instructions

You volunteer with an organization whose executive leadership has conflicted for almost a year in deep, fairly public ways, on a variety of topics. At first the conflict seemed to center on the types of events the organization sponsored, but more recently some members of the leadership team have been making accusations of bias based on race, culture, social status, and religion against other leadership members, including the director. The conflict is making it difficult for anyone to continue working with the organization.

The leadership team is composed of seven members. Six of the members, including the director, are women. There are two African-American members, including the only man on the team. There is one Hispanic member. The other four members, including the director, are Caucasian.

You have successfully handled small conflicts among the volunteers and staff in the past, and now they have asked you to step in and see if you can help resolve the conflict before it destroys the organization. Leadership has already agreed to bring you in to try and help the situation, but you know you need to have a solid plan for this undertaking.

Include the following in your conflict resolution plan:

  • Identify the factors that may be responsible for causing the conflict.
  • Explain how the conflict is affecting the rest of the organization.
  • Describe the conflict resolution style you will use in this situation.
  • Explain the conflict negotiation strategies you will try.
  • Based on your chosen strategies, determine the likely outcome.

To facilitate the evaluation of your plan, format your plan according to APA guidelines.

Develop A 3 4 Page Report On How Conflict Can Affect An Organization

Develop a 3-4 page report on how conflict can affect an organization. Describe reasons for conflict and explain the role of both functional and dysfunctional conflict in institutional change. Recommend strategies for resolving both functional and dysfunctional conflict.

Introduction

Institutional conflict can be viewed as either functional or dysfunctional. From the functional perspective, conflict can be seen as productive because it causes members of the institution to learn, improve, and develop creativity and problem solving skills. On the other hand, conflict can be seen as dysfunctional to the degree that it threatens the structure and stability of an institution and to the degree that it stifles creativity and change. Managed properly, conflict can cause people and the institution to grow and improve.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Identify variables within an organizational structure that can promote conflict.
    • Describe reasons for conflict within an institution or organization.
  • Competency 3: Apply appropriate strategies to reduce or resolve conflicts.
    • Recommend a conflict resolution strategy for functional conflict.
    • Recommend a conflict resolution strategy for dysfunctional conflict.
  • Competency 4: Analyze the impact of conflict on relationship building in face-to-face, virtual, cyber, and group communication.
    • Explain the role of functional conflict in institutional change.
    • Explain the role of dysfunctional conflict in institutional change.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats.
    • Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Preparation

Search the Capella library and the Internet for scholarly or professional articles that address institutional conflict and institutional change. You will need at least three articles or resources to use in this assessment.

Instructions

Complete the following:

  • Describe at least three reasons for conflict within an institution or organization. How might individual differences and perceptions contribute to the conflict?
  • Explain the role of functional conflict in institutional change.
  • Explain the role of dysfunctional conflict in institutional change.
  • Recommend one conflict resolution strategy organizational leadership could use with functional conflict.
  • Recommend one conflict resolution strategy organizational leadership could use with dysfunctional conflict.

Format this assessment as a professional report. Use appropriate headings and support your statements with the resources you located. Follow APA guidelines for your in-text citations and references.

Develop A 3 5 Page Outline Of Concepts You Would Like To Apply To Your Own Life And Identify Relevant Scholarly Sources That Will Help You With Your Application Of Concepts

Develop a 3-5 page outline of concepts you would like to apply to your own life and identify relevant scholarly sources that will help you with your application of concepts.

As you may have noticed as you have worked through earlier assessments, Sociology is applicable to our everyday lives. We can oftentimes take a sociological concept and use it to explain something that occurs in our own lives. For example, you have learned about norms and how we tend to follow the norms of a society. You can use that to explain how people behave when they are in an elevator. Most people face forward, look up at the numbers, and don’t talk.

Many of your experiences can be analyzed using sociological concepts. For your final assessment, Assessment 6, you will complete a Sociology of Me and apply many of the concepts you have learned about in this course to your own life. For Assessment 5, begin to think about which concepts you would like to apply to your own experience, develop an outline, and identify appropriate resources. In order to complete this assessment, you will need to show your understanding of some additional concepts related to social structure, education, and technology/media.

We have learned how a society’s culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren’t impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.

Sociologists also study education and how it is impacted by a society’s culture and structure. The purpose of education is to provide knowledge (facts, skills, cultural norms) to members of a society. In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. Education transmits the dominant culture, ensuring that children understand cultural norms and values. Educational attainment impacts life outcomes—it affects our occupation, earnings, work conditions, and health. Thus, education is related to social inequality. We have a tendency to assume that education is an equalizer in the United States, but this is something that is debated by sociologists. Is education equally available to everyone? Studies suggest it is not. Social class can impact the quality of school children attend, what they study, and how many years they attend school. Many students graduate from college with significant student loan debt. How might someone’s experience after college graduation be different if they graduated from college debt-free because their parents could afford to pay for it?

We regularly see new products and services as a result of increasing technology. We often take the influence of technology and media for granted, but it has a substantial impact on how we understand our culture and society as a whole. Many new products and services are a response to society’s changing needs. But technology can also serve to shape the values held by a society. Think about how our interaction has changed in the past ten years as a result of technology. Has that impacted our values? A small number of corporations deliver Internet platforms and a small number of corporations produce most of our media. What impact does that have on our access to technology and information?

Develop A 4 5 Page Analysis Of Your Experience With Gender Socialization In Doing So Analyze How Gender Is Created By Society Specifically Looking At Childrens Toys Andor Clothing 19403639

Culture is the glue that holds a society together—it is what encourages the members of that society to cooperate with each other as much as possible. We learn culture through socialization, the lifelong social experience. From birth we are taught how to be members of our society.

The most common agents of socialization are our family, peers, school, and media. The family, for example, influences a child’s development by such things as the way the parents hold the baby, look at it, talk to it, and respond to its needs. We take on typical gender roles from the beginning as girls are given pink clothes while boys are given blue. Family socialization is reinforced or modified by experiences at school and with peers, by the mass media, and by interaction with others. Socialization, the lifelong social experience through which we learn culture, is vital to becoming members of a society.

In this assessment, we look at the sociological concepts of culture and socialization and how they impact our behavior and attitudes.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Examine how theory and sociological concepts apply to everyday life.
    • Identify gender-specific childhood clothing and/or toys.
  • Competency 2: Explain the basic tools of sociological inquiry.
    • Summarize gender socialization sources.
    • Explain the validity and helpfulness of gender socialization sources.
  • Competency 4: Analyze the influence of culture on both the individual and society.
    • Describe the impact of gender-specific messages towards one’s self.
    • Analyze how gender-specific messages of childhood clothing and/or toys reflect larger societal expectations.
  • Competency 6: Compose text that articulates meaning relevant to its purpose and audience.
    • Develop text using organization, structure, and transitions that demonstrate understanding of cohesion between main and subtopics.

For this assessment, you analyze how gender is created by society, specifically looking at children’s toys and/or clothing. The purpose of this assessment is twofold:

  • It helps you to start thinking about the impact of socialization on your life as a starting point.
  • This first analysis will be used again for Assessment 6.

It also requires you to locate and evaluate resources on socialization and these resources may be used in Assessment 6.

Deliverable

Write an essay in which you complete all of the following:

PART 1

Examine the toys and clothing you had as a child.

  • Describe the clothing and toys from your childhood and identify which were gender-specific.

PART 2

Examine your experience with gender socialization.

  • Describe the message your toys and clothing sent you about gender.
  • Analyze how gender-specific messages that arise from childhood clothing and toys reflect larger societal expectations.
  • Reflect on the impact these messages had on you. Describe how you feel about your experience with gender socialization.

PART 3

Analyze and then include outside sources.

  • Your analysis should also include information from two additional outside resources regarding gender socialization—one from a popular source and one from a scholarly source. A critical component of this assessment involves evaluating these outside resources.
  • Summarize your outside articles (one scholarly and one popular) and explain how they helped you better understand your experience with gender socialization.
  • Explain the validity (quality) of each source and how helpful each was. What conclusions can you draw about the difference in these types of sources (popular versus scholarly)?

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Develop text using organization, structure, and transitions that demonstrate understanding of cohesion between main and subtopics. Written communication needs to be free of errors that detract from the overall message. Write in a professional style using references and correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Develop A 4 5 Page Healthy City Initiative Suitable For Implementation By Your City

Introduction

Government and Environmental Health

Disasters, both natural and man-made, can greatly affect human health. Government agencies must work together during a disaster to protect the health and safety of the individuals involved. Fire, rescue, police, hospital staff, public health departments, military, and civil defense all have a role to play. Heat waves, drought, hail, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and blizzards are all natural, climatological disasters. Fortunately, technology allows us to predict many of these events, so we can warn citizens and emergency personnel.

Geological disasters such as floods, landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can sometimes be predicted; usually, the only available response is the evacuation of the region. Man-made disasters include forest fires, industrial accidents, and transportation accidents. In 2007, several disasters caught the media’s attention, including the Minneapolis bridge collapse and the collapse of a coal mine in Utah. These tragedies required the response of a large number of trained professionals from various organizations. Another man-made disaster concern is terrorism.

Terrorism is a purposeful disaster carried out to scare or threaten a large group of people. Terrorism includes both domestic and international acts. The state of the environment and its link to human health have gotten a lot of attention in the last few years. Individuals are more aware of how air and water quality, food safety, and disaster preparation are important to maintaining their health and safety. This trend is not just occurring in the United States but throughout the world. The World Health Organization (2014) has instituted healthy cities initiatives that “address a range of key topics: air quality, climate change, and flooding, food safety, housing, noise, transport, urban planning, waste, and water. Each offers information and support to people working at the local level. Other information and support for local government includes guides to planning and pamphlets for local authorities.”

Going Green

Green architecture and green energy and transportation are becoming more popular, as people understand the benefits of these technologies. Homes of the future will likely:

  • Be easier to maintain.
  • Be energy efficient with solar or alternative types of heating and cooling.
  • Use recycled materials and nonpolluting paint.
  • Have heat-efficient windows, low-flow toilets, and a reservoir for rainwater.

More and more cities are seeing the benefits of green areas and greenways for biking, hiking, and recreation. These changes benefit the health of individuals by providing fresh air, a space for exercise, and an option for commuting without a car. Urban planners are looking more at public transportation, energy conservation, waste treatment, and urban forestry. Downtowns are being redeveloped in many areas, and community gardens and recycling centers are growing. The future holds many opportunities for us to improve environmental health. By making wise personal choices, we can improve environmental health for ourselves and those around us.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Assess basic environmental health principles, theories, and issues.
    • Define the term environmental health.
    • Assess how healthy cities relate to environmental health.
    • Analyze obstacles for a city in becoming a healthy city.
    • Describe the financial issues involved in creating a healthy city.
    • Analyze how environmental health is an individual concern.
    • Analyze how environmental health is a global concern.
  • Competency 3: Apply personal and professional decisions based upon an understanding of environmental risks.
    • Describe how a city could become prepared for disasters.
    • Assess benefits of developing a healthy city to one’s self, family, and community.
  • Competency 4: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats.
    • Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Preparation

Please review the assessment instructions and scoring guide. No additional preparation is required.

Instructions

The purpose of this assessment is to consider aspects of what makes a healthy city and to integrate your research to provide strategies for individuals and communities to improve environmental health.

To begin, suppose you are working with your city planner to develop a healthy city initiative for your city (or a city near you). You are tasked with developing a report that will be presented to your city council.

Craft a 4–5-page written document that could be presented to your city council, addressing the following points:

  • What is environmental health?
  • Why is creating a healthy city important to environmental health?
  • What could your city do to become a healthy city?
    • What would be the obstacles to change and why are they obstacles?
    • What financial issues would have to be considered?
    • How would these changes benefit you, your family, and your community?
  • What could your city do to become better prepared for disasters, both natural and human-made?
  • Why should environmental health be considered an individual concern? Why should it be considered a global concern?
  • What could you or your family do—in your home, your neighborhood, and your workplace—to reduce your personal impact on the environmental health of your city?
Additional Requirements

Your document should follow a logical structure and be evidence based. Use the APA Paper Template as a resource for formatting and citations.

  • Written Communication: Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Length: The report should be 4–5 pages in content length. Include a separate title page and a separate references page.
