This week culminates in your submission of an annotated bibliography that should consist of an introduction, followed by two quantitative article annotations, two qualitative article annotations, and two mixed methods article annotations for a total of six annotations, followed by a conclusion.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation. Each annotation consists of a summary, analysis, and application for the purpose of conveying the relevance and value of the selected source. As such, annotations demonstrate a writer’s critical thinking about and authority on the topic represented in the sources.

In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful precursor for gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

• Use the Walden library databases or a credible source to search for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research articles from peer-reviewed journals on your topic of interest.
• Before you read the full article and begin your annotation, locate the methodology section in the article to be sure that it describes the appropriate research design.

1. For quantitative research articles, confirm that a quantitative research design, such as a quasi-experimental, casual comparative, correlational, pretest–posttest, or true experimental, was used in the study.
2. For qualitative research articles, confirm that a qualitative research design or approach, such as narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, or phenomenology, was used in the study.
3. For mixed methods research articles, confirm that a mixed methods research (MMR) design was used in the study. There are several design classifications in MMR; some examples of MMR types or families of design are parallel, concurrent, sequential, multilevel, or fully integrated mixed methods design.

• Prepare an annotated bibliography that includes the following:

1. A one-paragraph introduction that provides context for why you selected the six research articles you did: two quantitative, two qualitative, and two MMR.
2. A reference list entry in APA Style for each of the six articles that follows proper formatting. Follow each reference list entry with a three-paragraph annotation that  includes:

4. An analysis
5. A summary
6. A one-paragraph conclusion that presents a synthesis of the six articles.
7. Format your annotated bibliography in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced. A separate References list page is not needed for this assignment.

For this assessment, you will research best practices related to a current health care problem.  To explore your chosen topic, you should use the first two steps of the Socratic Problem-Solving Approach as described on Campus to aid your critical thinking.

  

The Socratic Method is a teaching style in which teachers ask students questions designed to stimulate more complete thinking and deeper insight. It also relates to the steps of performing scientific research. When the Socratic approach is applied, students are prompted to look more closely at your ideas, question your assumptions and accepted premises, and view your choices through a rigorous lens.

TOPIC: MEDICATION ERRORS

  

A medication error is a preventable adverse effect of a patient taking the wrong medication or dosage, whether or not it is evident or harmful to the patient. Medication errors can be a source of serious patient harm, including death.

Potential Intervention Approaches:

1. View the Assessment Topic and Write a brief overview of the selected topic. In your overview:
   • Describe the health care problem or issue.
   • Describe your interest in the topic.
   • Describe any professional experience you have with this topic.
2. Conduct a search for scholarly or academic peer-reviewed literature related to the topic and describe the criteria you used to search for articles, including the names of the databases you used.
   • You will want to access the applicable Undergraduate Library Research Guide related to your degree (found at the NHS Learner Success Lab) for tips to help you in your search.
   • Use keywords related to the health care problem or issue you are researching to select relevant articles.
3. Assess the credibility of the information sources you find.
   • Determine if the source is from an academic peer-reviewed journal.
   • Determine if the publication is current.
   • Determine if information in the academic peer-reviewed journal article is still relevant.
4. Select four current scholarly or academic peer-reviewed journal articles published during the past three to five years that relate to your topic.
5. Explain the relevance of the information sources.
   • Describe how the health care problem or issue is addressed in each source.
   • Discuss what kind of contribution each source provides on your selected topic.
6. Analyze the scholarly literature or academic peer-reviewed journal articles using the annotated bibliography organizational format.
   • The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to document a list of references along with key information about each one. The detail about the reference is the annotation. Developing this annotated bibliography will create a foundation of knowledge about the selected topic.
   • List the full reference for the source in APA format (author, date, title, publisher, et cetera) and use APA format for the annotated bibliography.
   • Make sure the references are listed in alphabetical order, are double-spaced, and use hanging indents.
   • Follow the reference with the annotation.
7. In your annotation:
   • Identify the purpose of the article.
   • Summarize the source:
     • What are the main arguments?
     • What topics are covered?
   • Include the conclusions and findings of the article.
   • Write your annotation in a paragraph form. The annotation should be approximately 150 words (1 to 3 paragraphs) in length.
8. In a separate paragraph or two at the end of the paper, summarize what you learned from your research.
   • List the main points you learned about.
   • Summarize the main contributions of the sources you chose and how they enhanced your knowledge about the topic.

Select a transition of care (hospital, specialty care, rehabilitation, nursing home, homebound, etc.).

Use the Library and other reputable academic resources to locate 5­ scholarly resources on nurse leadership during this transition of care. Extra Credit Assignment Worth: 10 points

This is a 2-part assignment due Monday, August 12th, at 11:59pm. To receive full credit, students are to do the following:

Select 2 scholarly practice based articles related to any nursing theory of your choice that have been published within the past 10 years, 2009 until current. Do not select a non-practice based article. Then analyze the articles, be sure to address the following for each selected article:

 

PART 1: Complete for each of the selected articles  

Summarize purpose of the article/research study                          

Description of theoretical concepts identified in article                   

Description of how are concepts measured in article                    

Describe implications of findings in support of the theory             

PART 2: Complete this part only once, after addressing the above questions for both articles separately.

 

Write a 1 paragraph description (minimum 300 words) analyzing how the selected theory can be used in advanced nursing practice. Be specific, including what outcomes (for patient as well as the nurse practitioner) you might expect. 

In total, this assignment is to be approximately 3-4 pages in length including the title page, no reference page is needed as students are to use the article name and authors as a heading before summarizing both articles.
