I intend to travel to Jamestown to inquire find information on the first African American immigrants, their culture during the time, what motivated them to travel to the United States and the relationships they had with the North Americans after the arrival.

Although the cultural element of African Americans emerged strongly especially in the early times of their arrival in the United States, their ability to maintain their culture faced massive challenges. Examples of the challenges included the, arrival of second generation African Americans in the continent, cultural oppression form the slave masters and the demeaning view of African culture by the Europeans.

To establish the truth of this fact, I will visit the school and collect information on African American culture and the challenges the community faced in maintain them. I will also visit neighbourhoods with high population of African Americans with the view of interacting with different generations of the community and establish the levels of cultural erosions especially in their music.

According to the text, African American music replicates the styles of music and performances that still exist in Africa. These kinds of music integrate human life experiences since the communities strongly consider music to be a fundamental art of life. According to the African life and music are inseparable. Because of this the performances of music not only signifies entertainment but also accompanies certain activities. Further, the performers enjoy close associations with the community. When preliminary tests on animals provide promising results, only then these studies are conducted on human beings. Therefore, the use of animals in medical research has been extremely useful in understanding the human body and the changes in functions when dealing with a disease. Hence, animals provide a good testing ground to conduct medical research and should continue to be used within the limits of the code of ethics. This paper will examine the historical background concerning the use of animals in medical research and closely examine the different perspectives pertaining to it. It will also elaborate my arguments supporting the use of animals in medical research and why I feel it is especially critical to do so in this day and age. Relevant History and Background The use of animals in medical and behavioral studies can be traced back to ancient Greek writings which record that Aristotle, the Greek philosopher conducted experiments on live animals. In fact, Aristotle argued that, “animals, having sense perception but lacking reason, fall below humans in a natural hierarchy and are therefore appropriate resources for human purposes” (DeGrazia 3). …

Traditionally, the moral status of animals has been shaped by religion and philosophy. The Bible mentions that God created human beings in His own image and gave him authority over all that was created – including animals. According to DeGrazia, the Bible reinforces the Aristotelian view of animals of using them for human purposes (3). Christian philosophers like Augustine and Thomas Aquinas also emphasized that since animals cannot reason, they are subordinate to human beings (DeGrazia 3). However Hinduism and Islamic beliefs consider animals to have some degree of rationality and at times consider them on par with human beings (DeGrazia 3). Current medical research practices ensure only the least number of the most appropriate animal is used. Again, the U.S. federal law requires all animals to be treated humanely and that they should experience the least amount of pain and distress when used in medical research. For as long as animals have been used for medical research, there have been people and groups fighting for animal rights through writings and peaceful protests. However, as the experimentation on animals increased over the years, so did the controversy and criticism concerning it, especially with respect to the practice of vivisection – a process which involves conducting surgery on living organisms, usually animals, for physiological or pathological investigations (DeGrazia).

It is not surprising that 51 percent of American adults consider casino gambling “acceptable for anyone,” (Popkin and Hetter 1994), as the proliferation of sports books and new casinos on virtually every Indian reservation continues unabated. Adding gambling addictions, scams, the drain on taxes, and the unchecked expansion of Internet gambling to the mix, this lucrative industry is draining much of the life out of families and the economy to the point that its illegalization is the only answer. With America’s continued economic downturn, gambling is exacerbating society’s financial woes, as it also reported to feed into costly collateral damage seen in alcoholism, prostitution, drug abuse, destroyed families and various criminal behaviors. But compared to the revenues generated by other segments of the entertainment industry, does gambling really take that big of a bite out of America’s pocketbook? To get an idea, a government report stated that in 1997, Americans spent some $50 billion on gambling, which was more than all the money spent on movie tickets, theme parks, recorded music, and video games combined, which generated a substantially lower $39.9 billion (Campbell 1999). The government has even gotten into the gambling business through seemingly harmless state lotteries, which are often touted as “supporting our schools,” yet many taxpayer dollars go into funding gambling winnings. And even though it is noted that “Legal gambling operations in the U.S. pay millions of dollars in taxes annually to the local and federal governments,” (Hammer 2001), it is also contended that gambling throws away a great deal our federal government’s money. Yet it is argued that shutting down the gambling industry could have disastrous effects, “What happened with alcohol [prohibition] was a disaster . . . Nobody wants this business, which is flourishing offshore, being pushed back onto the streets and the back alleys of the U.S. . . . there’s a huge opportunity here [for the government to collect revenue],”(Carruthers 2004). But legal experts assert that legalized gambling has never been on the scale to resolve any social issues, as “States frequently overestimate the financial impact of gambling revenues,” (Popkin and Hetter 1994). Consequently, it is hard to argue that keeping gambling legal will outweigh the harmful financial and social ramifications that this frivolous pastime carries with it. Feeding into the burgeoning gambling industry with its lotteries, casinos and sports books is the expansion of Internet gambling, which has ensnared Americans in the dangerous privacy and comfort of their own homes. To give a perspective of its growth, it is estimated that worldwide Internet gambling accounted for $300 million in 1997 (Campbell 1999), $2.2 billion in 2000 (Bedell 2011), and the projected amount for 2006 came to $100 billion (Baker 1999). In addition, “It is reported that more than 4.5 million Americans have gambled online at least once,” (Bedell 2001) and it is also reported that online sports books take in more money from the Super Bowl than all Las Vegas sports bookies combined (Any Given Sunday). And with increased Internet gambling, there has been a proliferation in criminals scamming gamblers by illegally obtaining personal information, including credit card, social security and pass code data.

Later on Blair was succeeded by Gordon Brown who maintained the same stance as Blair about UK joining Euro. About seven years ago, Gordon Brown made decision that has until now has been withheld about the zero chances of Britain joining the Euro zone (Owen, 2012:120). Although many economists in Britain at the time when economic crisis was experienced suggested that UK joining the Eurozone would work for the benefit of the nations, these suggestions were greatly condemned and detested by a majority of the citizens including Gordon Brown himself. This period of economic upheaval seemed like it could set United Kingdom to pair with other states of the Eurozone and share the Euro currency but it did not materialize then (Owen, 2012:124). However, there are several reasons why UK should or should not join Euro and they have been discussed.

It would really serve UK best in the international market if it joins the Euro since it will be best insulated from the many ever changing rates in currency. This is because most of the countries it will be trading with have the same currency (Euro) rather than having pounds and other currencies bring fluctuations in exchange rates.
