Life and Works Research Project (Week 8)

Research Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s life and work using the Internet, the University library, or other sources.

Create presentation of at least 20 slides that analyzes the life and art of your selected artist or architect.

Note: You may use PowerPoint, Prezi, or another format. If you choose to upload your presentation, remember that the maximum file size is 100MB. It is strongly encouraged that you host your presentation online and provide a direct link. 

Consider addressing the following questions:

• Why did you select this artist or architect?
• What were his or her influences? For example, you may wish to consider life events, political or historical events, artistic training, and even psychological factors. How did these influence his or her work?
• What were his or her most notable or important works? Why were they influential? Are they still relevant? What was his or her motivation in creating them?
• How successful was he or she financially and in terms of critical recognition? What might account for this success (or lack thereof)?

Include a title slide and a References slide in your presentation.

Format citations and references consistent with APA guidelines.

Create your own original work of art in the style of, or inspired by, your chosen artist or architect. You may use any medium you choose as long as you are able to provide an image or video of your creation and upload it.  Note:  Your original work must have an association with the artist or architect you selected for this assignment.  Your original art does not require a massive effort.  If you selected an artist, a very simple sketch in the style of the artist is all that is required.  If you selected an architect, a sketch of a detail of one of the architect’s buildings would be sufficient.  As an alternative, a model can be constructed of a detail of the building using very simple materials such as cardboard. 

Explain your own motivation behind your work of art and how it relates to your selected artist.

Life course theory suggests that change in predisposition towards crime is the norm, conflicting with some previous theories suggesting stability is the norm. Can you discuss this conflict and weigh in on the debate?

Life has evolved to occupy the entire temperature range that water is a liquid from the freezing point of water to the boiling point. Some organisms have even evolved to live routinely at temperatures below the freezing point of water (and many plants and some fish have evolved to survive occasional freezes). Please explain how an organism might adapt to such low temperatures. Hint: Recall how ice on the sidewalk melts (is kept liquid) when salt is applied.

Life is full of equation solving. You probably don’t even realize when you are solving equations.

Take, for instance, your cell phone plan. Your cell phone carrier charges you a flat rate of $60 a month for unlimited talk/text and 4 GB of data. You are charged $5 for every GB you go over. If one month you use 7 GB, how much did you spend? Thought question: If this pattern continues, should you think about switching to the 10 GB plan for $80?

Another example would be your paycheck. You earn $13 an hour plus time-and-a-half overtime for anything over 40 hours. One week you worked 46 hours and the next week you worked 51 hours. What would your gross pay be for that two-week period? Thought question: Using that pay period as an example, would you rather have a pay raise of $15 an hour but no overtime pay, or keep your current rate and take the overtime?

Bet you could figure those out!

For this discussion, include two different parts in your original post:

Part 1: Pick one of the above examples and set up your equation and work it out completely showing all of your steps. Then answer the thought question and justify your answer.

Part 2: The above are just two examples of how equations are used in day-to-day life. Describe two examples where you use equations in your daily life. Set up and solve one of your examples. Here is an example of what you are being asked to do:

LIFE STAGES NUTRITION PRESENTATION

Create a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation discussing the nutritional needs during a person’s different life stages (childhood, adulthood, pregnancy, lactation, and such). Include the following in your presentation:

Define nutrient, energy, and fluid needs during each life stage.

Describe nutrients of concern or special concerns during each life stage.

Identify physical activity recommendations during each life stage.

Discuss the following topics for the specified stages of life:

Pregnancy – weight gain recommendations

Lactation – benefits of breastfeeding

Infancy – growth rate

Childhood – helping kids develop healthy eating habits and bodies

Adolescence – helping teens meet nutrient needs

Adulthood – aging and factors that affect it

Include introductory slide, conclusion slide and reference slide

Include speaker notes that detail the implications of each slide.

Include a reference slide with citations in APA format.

Include clip art.

PART 2 FOOD SAFETY

Consult the Food Safety Scenarios document and then complete the following for each scenario:

Scenario 1

Write at least 50-word responses to each of the following questions. Be clear and concise, use complete sentences, and explain your answers using specific examples.

Based on Scenario 1, what are the possible sources of food-borne illness?

Although Jeremiah did not get sick, there were several areas throughout Jeremiah’s day that could have led him to a serious case of food-borne illness. Point out these areas and briefly explain why they are of concern and what Jeremiah could have done differently.

Why is it safe for steak to be pink in the middle, but potentially dangerous for a hamburger not to be cooked all the way through?

Scenario 2

Write at least 50-word responses to each of the following questions. Be clear and concise, use complete sentences, and explain your answers using specific examples.

How could this illness have been prevented?

Based on the incubation period and symptoms of the illness, what is the most likely microorganism responsible for this illness?

Describe the temperature danger zone.

How could Martha have sped up the cooling process of the lasagna?

If the leftover lasagna was thoroughly reheated, (which it was), how did it still lead to food-borne illness?

Scenario 3

Write at least 50-word responses to each of the following questions. Be clear and concise, use complete sentences, and explain your answers using specific examples.

What could be the cause of Sally and her family members’ illness?

How could this illness have been prevented?
