Langer and Rodin (1976) conducted studies in nursing homes.  They found that when people were placed in institutions where they lost a sense of control there were detrimental effects on their health.  These residents learned to be helpless.  However, when residents were given an opportunity to care for a plant, their sense of helplessness decreased.

Based on your resources this week, choose three areas of language and reading acquisition that you found most interesting and that were unknown to you prior to this week. Explain the theoretical perspectives of each of these chosen areas. Apply skeptical inquiry to a brief discussion about why language acquisition is an important area for scholars and educators to understand when developing learning opportunities. Apply the concept of language and reading acquisition to your own academic success. Has your own language development affected your success as a student? As an employee? How? Based on the resources and your current knowledge, do you believe you could develop areas personally that would be beneficial to you, your loved ones, or your friends? Your initial post should be 450 to 600 words in length and thoroughly discuss each of the elements in the prompt.

 Language, Gender and Identity

Pick three words or phrases that you feel best personally describe you (e.g. athletic, smart, reserved, domestic, etc). Then, discuss whether and how these words are considered typical of your gender, according to American culture and/or your own culture(s). How do the terms you chose illustrate the expectations for the gender that you identify with? Or, if they do not illustrate the gender that you identify with, explain why this is so. You can explain this last point either in terms of shared cultural expectations of gender roles or your own expectations.

Also consider this page on Navajo genders. What would you be if you lived in a culture with multiple genders and gender roles? Remember these are not necessarily tied to sexuality as Gender is in Western culture but represent different cultural roles and responsibilities.
