Re:       Financing Parochial Schools

The Catholic parish I belong to operates a grade school.  The annual cost of the school is just over $5,000 per student, but tuition is only $3,000.  The parish can no longer afford to support the school under these circumstances.  The parish finance council has proposed a plan that involves increasing tuition to $4,000 per student and giving enrollment preference to families that pledge to donate at least $2,000 per child per year through the Sunday collection.  Children of families that pledge a lesser amount (or no contribution at all) will be admitted only to the extent that there are openings, based on a budget that includes tuition and school family pledges.  Families that fail to fulfill their pledges will not be allowed to enroll their children in subsequent years.

One of the members of the council asked if this arrangement will affect the families’ ability to claim a charitable deduction for their Sunday contributions.  Please research this issue and let me know if there are any problems. If there are guidelines, how strict are they; that is, do the courts or the IRS indicate that there is some wiggle room?

For this Discussion, you’ll be writing about the work of two of these artists and commenting on two of your teammates responses.

Answer the following questions (MINIMUM OF 500 WORDS)

1)  Which artist’s work did you find most interesting?  Why?

2)  How did her work relate to the ideas of Shape or Space in Chapter 4?  Both in technical terms, but also conceptually.

Be specific here by using vocabulary from the textbook.  I’m looking for you to be able to apply the language and concepts from the book to the specific works shown in the videos.  Can you expand on the just the actual presence of shape and space and apply these formal elements to their main concept?  Make sure you cite specific works from the video.

3)  How did her work relate to the ideas of Line in Chapter 3?  Both in technical terms, but also conceptually.

Again, be specific by using the terminology from the textbook.  Also, see if you can push the formal element of line to apply to the main concept of the artist. 

4)  Compare your answers to questions 1 – 3 with one of the other two artists.  Did this other artist use Shape, Space, or Line differently?  How?
