As students, if we do not carefully research the topics and issues before us, and discover the best way to address and get it under control through proper data collection, giving credit to where it is due, we will not be able to carry these out as nurses. This is exactly what we are going to do for every patients concern. We will have to research or investigate the problem, collect data, analyze it, plan, while advocating for the patient as we present our findings to the physicians. Our implementation of the prescribed care will focus on the patient’s safety, and we will patiently and together with the physician evaluate the outcome of the whole process. This will aid to enhance a much better outcome for these patients.Their trust in the profession of nursing will be strengthened. The issue here is about honesty and integrity in our work as nurses. We are expected to research enough materials and get an excellent  grasp of the researched topic while giving credit to the sources of our acquired wisdom. Nursing is a very trusted profession and therefore nurses are meant to provide professional care to members of the community, integrity is essential in this type of work. Poor decision making is led by lack of integrity and dishonesty, this can have poor patient outcomes. I think that since most people who are achieving their baccalaureate degree are full time nurses, time is a big issue. They think cutting corners and copying and pasting will save time. They forget that nursing is a profession passed on integrity and trust, plagiarism can affect their performance and impact EBP created to affect change in patient care (LaDuke, 2013).

Things that I will plan to do to ensure my academic integrity when doing work for my BSN is to use plagiarism prevention software like Turnitin, making sure to give credit to each piece of work by citing authors and dates correctly, and for asking for help if I am not sure if it’s a credible source or if I am citing correctly.

Critical thinking can be defined as incorporating data analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data to determine patient interventions. It allows the nurse to implement care and evaluate the outcome. It further permits for care to be changed if outcomes aren’t as desired. Critical thinking and critical evaluation are interchangeable. It enables the nurse to gather data and process that data to influence better patient care giving rise to better patient outcomes. Patient outcomes have improved when this process has been implemented. Foley catheter utilization driven by EBP and how it’s decreased catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) is one great example of its success. Patients no longer have a Foley catheter placed without a medically necessary reason. Risks and benefits have been tested, evaluated and substantiated to Foley catheter usage. This has greatly improved (decreased) CAUTI incidence and decreased negative patient outcomes. (Green, 2018) “EBP is aimed at hardwiring current knowledge into common care decisions to improve care processes and patient outcomes” (Stevens, 2013) This is an outstanding improvement to delivering patient care. As nurses we want to facilitate health and well being without causing harm. Exercising critical thinking and EBP when rendering care will help achieve that goal.

Green defines critical thinking by saying,“Critical thinking in nursing is the ability to apply the nursing process effectively and purposefully to an identified problem” (Green, 2018). While this is a good definition it seems to be lacking in that it does not clearly indicate or explain the “critical thinking” part. The definition appears more about the problem solving while using the nursing process. The nursing process is a efficient method for solving problems but to define critical thinking a little expanding is required. Critical thinking includes Green’s definition plus requires formulating a solution to the problem utilizing creativity and analysis from as many view points as possible looking for potential alternative responses and outcomes to the problem. In nursing the nurse utilizes critical thinking in every aspect of client care because nursing utilizes a holistic approach. This includes care for the client in the areas beyond just the diagnosis and includes treating psychological and social aspects of a person. The importance of using critical thinking to treat the client in a holistic approach is a source or interference with the healing process maybe beyond physical. Once the nurse critical thinks about the situation and addresses the problems then solutions can be applied, and the healing process can continue.

    The eBook defines EBP in chapter three as, “The integration of clinical expertise, the most up-to-date research, and patient’s preferences to formulate and implement best practices for patient care.” (Dean, 2018). The intertwining of critical thinking and EBP will allow for better client outcomes, shorter stays, and increased satisfaction scores. These will all be accomplished through applying a scientific process to aspects of care and determining if the care is indeed helping, hurting, or no impact on client outcomes.

The other factors are work-related factors including a relationship with the doctors, health professionals, and other interdisciplinary health care team. As nurses, we have the power to influence how the public views the nurse’s role today.This can be accomplished by educating our patients and their families in our day to day practice.A task-oriented nurse can go in a patient’s room and hang an IV and take vital signs without even saying a word to the patient or family.The family may have questions and concerns; however, if a nurse does not even make eye contact the perception of nursing may be negative.A nurse that makes eye contact with the patient and family, explains what they are doing, and in turn asks if they have any questions or concerns can help put the nursing profession in a positive light.The role nurses have is multi-faceted. The need to care for the sick has been around since the beginning of time. The practice of nursing has greatly changed in that time. The matriarch of nursing, Florence Nightingale, started her influence during the Crimean War. Nursing education has changed over time. The 3-year diploma programs, that once were so popular have all but disappeared. The associate nursing degree, pioneered by Mildred Montag, in the 1950s, as a response to an increased need for nurses, has also lost its appeal as baccalaureate nurses today are in demand. Because of the IOM recommendation that 80% of the RN workforce by the year 2020 be baccalaureate prepared it has changed the landscape of entry level nursing. (Whitney, 2018)

Advanced practice nurses are widely utilized today. The range of advance practice nurses is great including: nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists. Nurse practitioners can prescribe and treat minor illnesses, nurse midwives provide low risk obstetric and gynecological care and nurse anesthetists administer more than 65% of all anesthetics. Contemporary nursing uniforms have radically changed, thank goodness. After reviewing the required reading for this week, I decided if I had to wear the “get up” from the turn of the century picture of Georgina Pope 1898, I would have picked a different profession. The use of nursing theory in research is very important.
