Most would agree that parenting is a lifelong job. The parent’s obligations begin once the baby is conceived and seemingly never end, even after his or her child becomes an adult.

Suppose that you are the parent in each of the following scenarios. Based on what you have learned from this unit’s materials, answer the following questions for each scenario by explaining how you would effectively handle each situation.

Note: While it is understood different people and even entire cultures have different parenting styles, your answers should be based on the research and theories presented in this unit.

• Describe the stage of cognitive development of the child in each scenario.
• Explain how you would address the child and the situation. Will you use punishment in any of the situations? What tactics would be the most useful considering your child’s level of cognitive development?

Scenario 1: At the playground, your 5-year-old daughter shoves another child and takes away the child’s toy. Your daughter then screams at the child and runs away.

Scenario 2: You discover that your 13-year-old son has taken $20 from your purse and is planning to use it to purchase vapes (e-cigarettes) at school. The only reason you found out is because your 15-year-old daughter tattled after becoming upset that her brother would not give her half of the loot to serve as hush money. How do you address each child?

Scenario 3: Your 21-year-old daughter comes home from college and excitedly shares that she met a new guy on Tinder, and she plans to marry him next month. She then reveals that she will be quitting school, despite only having 1 year left to complete her bachelor’s degree. (She does not see the need for her degree any longer, as her fiancé is rich, or so she has been told.) She has decided to throw away the career plans and dream wedding she has planned since she was 10 years old because now she finally has her Prince Charming, and her life is all set!

Your combined answers for each scenario must be at least 150 words, for a minimum of 450 words for the entire assignment (not including the title and reference pages).

Your answers should include an insightful and thorough analysis and present a strong argument with evidence. You must use at least one source to support your analysis. This may be your textbook or another scholarly source. All sources used will be properly cited. Your case study, including all references, will be formatted in APA style.

Project 3 (Final Project)

For this project you will write about a category of criminal activity you studied and found most compelling during the course of this class. In general, your assignment is to examine this criminal activity, its theoretical perspectives, and the underlying factors in an effort to explain the behavior and reduce recidivism in the future. Use your critical thinking and research skills to compose a paper that demonstrates what you have learned in this course.

Instructions:

Choose a category of crime from the range of criminal activities you studied this semester. (Sexual Assault)

· Select a specific individual or group that perpetrated this type of crime

· Begin with a brief (150 to 200 word) abstract, which is a comprehensive summary of the contents of your project

· Use your course materials and at least three (3) outside resources (not course instructional material) to support your work

Write a concluding statement.

Project Outline

1. Define and describe the category of crime, its characteristics, typical offenders, and the theoretical perspectives attributed to it.

2. Identify and describe your chosen individual or group that perpetrated this type of crime.

3. Explain the perpetrator/s background. For example:

• If an individual, explain where they were born, their family structure, the socioeconomic conditions, education, their life events that led up to the criminal act, etc.

• If a group of individuals or political faction, explain how and why the group was formed, when they were active, where they were located, how they were organized, etc.

4. If you have identified a specific exemplary incident describe the crime. Explain what happened, when it happened, where it happened, the conditions that led up to the crime (s), what if any gain the perpetrator realized as a result of the crime etc.

5. Explain the factors or predictors that may have influenced this criminal behavior such as, but not limited to:

• Risk factors (as outlined in your textbook)

• Psychological disorders

• Mental illness

• Substance abuse

• Motivations

• Political ideologies

6. Explain whether the offender (s) were able to follow through with the crime (s).

• If they were able to, how did they achieve it? Over what time period?

• If not, why not?

7. Identify and describe the legal, corrective, and/or rehabilitative action that is appropriately directed to perpetrators of this criminal activity. Is there evidence (or do you believe) the punishment and or treatment programs can be effective in reducing recidivism?

8. Describe and evaluate any associated outcomes/impact emanating from this criminal activity or specific incident, such as increased social awareness, change in policy or laws, negative backlash or unintended effects, etc.

9. Concluding statement

Grading:

The evaluation of this project will focus on:

1. Your understanding and description of the crime category you selected.

2. Your comprehensive review of the example case

3. Your analysis of the risk factors in the example case

4. Overall quality of the composition

5. Compliance with the format requirements.

Format:

1. A minimum of 2,500 words not including cover page and references page

2. The cover page should include the name and number of the course, the name of the student, title of the project and the date of submission.

3. The narrative composition is to be 12 pt. font, double spacing, with 1 inch margins

4. Resources, including course materials, must be cited both in the narrative where appropriate and on a separate references page, using APA citation rules.

5. Projects should be submitted using the Assignment Folder unless instructed otherwise.

6. At the instructor’s discretion, this project may be submitted to Turnitin or other services for verification of originality.

B. Select an emergency or disaster event in history, e.g., Pompeii/Mt Vesuvius, Hurricane Camille, The Great Chicago Fire, Hindenburg, Chernobyl, etc. Write a Media/News Release for the disaster event at any time period /significant event of the disaster, e.g., 4 hours pre-landfall, 2 weeks later, etc. Use yourself as the PIO contact and the disaster location as the origin of the release. You can originate the release from any organization/EOC you think reasonable.

NOTE: Remember, you are writing from the perspective of the Public Information Officer (PIO) from an agency “responding” to the disaster. You are not writing as a news reporter.

C. Prepare a media/news release in written form using the information found in the “Writing – Media Releases & Packets” presentation (specifically slides 6-11) from Week 2. The release should be done as a Microsoft Word document and posted to the “Media Release #1” folder in the “Assignments” section of the course Canvas website. Your release should show examples of each concept covered in the course to date. You will be graded on content, format (as covered in the Week 2 “Writing – Media Releases & Packets”) presentation, effectiveness of your message as well as empathy, stakeholder strategies and what readers should do next.
