In His Article Appiah Notifies Us That In October 2005 The Unesco General Confer

In his article, Appiah notifies us that in October 2005, the UNESCO General Conference approved a convention on the ‘protection and promotion’ of cultural diversity.  According to Appiah, the motivation of this convention was based on ‘the fear is that the values and images of Western mass culture, like some invasive weed, are threatening to choke out the world’s native flora.’

In the same article Appiah refers to some of the ‘women’s rights’ like the right to vote, the right to work outside their homes, the right to be protected from the physical abuse of men, etc.

This activity will be undertaken individually into two parts. First, you are required to write an essay in which you are going to develop the idea of up to what point it is ‘cultural imperialism’ for us to defend those women’s rights.  By advocating these rights, are we then violating the convention of cultural diversity as we promote the protection of women’s human rights worldwide?

In His Book Leading Change Hbs Press 1996 John Kotter States A Strategy Of Embra 1

In his book Leading Change (HBS Press 1996), John Kotter states:

“A strategy of embracing the past will probably become increasingly ineffective over the next few decades. Better for most of us to start learning now how to cope with change, to develop whatever leadership potential we have, and to help our organizations in the transformation process. Better for most of us, despite the risks, to leap into the future. And to do so sooner rather than later.”

Do you agree with the author? If he is correct, how can we apply that to our own career plans?

In His Book The Conscious Mind 1996 David Chalmers Gave Zombies New Life And Mad

In his book The Conscious Mind (1996), David Chalmers gave zombies new life and made them a part of philosophical inquiry. Zombies give us a way of examining the question about whether we have minds or souls that are different from our bodies.

Chalmers asks us to imagine a world exactly like ours but populated by zombies. In this thought experiment, zombies do not have self-awareness but are otherwise exactly like us.

Daniel Dennett claims that zombies cannot be exactly like us, only without self-awareness, precisely because we learn from our awareness of what is happening to us. Zombies do not feel pain; we do. Therefore, zombies cannot, by definition, be exactly like us. They have to be a different type of being. The difference between humans and zombies IS self-awareness.

This week, consider the question, “Can humans be humans if they do not have self-awareness?” Put another way, the question is, are people? What difference does self-awareness make?
