The study that the article does tries to point out the discrepancies that lie between what the employees claim to be the factors that motivate them at work and the actual factor that drives the behavior of the employees. According to the authors, the managers and the employees tend to disregard the importance of salary though it is actually the most important factor for providing impetus to the performance of the employees. In the first part of the article, the authors have tried to demonstrate their claim about the fact that there is a gap between what the employees claim and the reality. The authors have made a compilation from different articles and periodicals written by various authors on this topic. This has been done to make a comparative analysis of the ideas that the renowned authors seem to have. A review of the previous literature has been done where the two types of opinions have been presented. On one hand those authors have taken a salary as the motivating factor for employees and have asked the people to rank its importance and on the other hand, those who are dealing with real-time studies have considered the other factors as well for estimating the factors of their motivation. The problem with this analysis is that the authors have taken only the cases where major studies have been taken. It may not reflect the reality. This again has strengthened the position of the authors. The authors have taken the studies which are to some extent biased towards the points that they have tried to establish. Only those cases that are supporting their research have been considered and the others have been ignored. The concept of social desirability of the employees has been mentioned by the authors in this section. The authors feel that the employees do not want to mention pay as their motivating factor because it is unacceptable to the society that money is the sole driver of the performances. This is true because although people work for money, they have a tendency to portray that they work mainly for intellectual satisfaction and for gaining prestige in the organisation. This particular aspect has also strengthened what the authors posit. An important aspect that the authors have ignored is that there may be two organisations that offer the same salary to a particular employee. In such a situation there might be others factors that actually help an employee decide which organisation to join for example the level of job satisfaction, his relationship with his peers or the learning opportunities. The authors have mentioned about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in the article. According to them if the basic needs that can be fulfilled by money are satisfied the higher needs like education, socialisation would also be fulfilled with the use of money. This may not be true. Dante, through his poem Inferno, illustrates that human beings ignore their values and virtues in the pursuit of trivial pleasures. They indulge in sinful activities of varying nature despite their faculty of free will, in utter neglect of morals. Thus, they land up in hell, as the punishment for their misdeed. He assigns different circles in hell for each type of sin and contends that the worst sin is the lack of self control due to which humans embark on wrong deeds. Similarly, the anonymous author of Sir Gawain & the Green Knight also emphasizes the need for virtues and values in human life, through the protagonist’s chivalry. The poem also connotes to the lack of spiritual value in humans by depicting the protagonist’s conflict of having to choose between his life and his virtues.

Another significant similarity of these works is that they use their plot to depict the social, political and intellectual life of the medieval era. While Dante does this through the narration of the lives of the people whom he meets in Hell, the other author achieves this through Gawain’s encounter with different characters during his quest. Both these works use poetic language to illustrate their themes and to create impact on the readers. Such parallels can be found in Dante’s allusion that humans will not be “absolved without repentance//nor repent and wish to sin concurrently,” in which the author conveys a profound meaning in a few words (XXVII 118 – 119). Similarly, the latter paints a vivid of a character in a couple of lines with “Fair faced, and free of fear//He sitteth o’er them all”

This notion has further fanned and spread at every educational level, by the so called intellectual custodians, that blacks are innately intellectually and culturally inferior to whites. By the end of Reconstruction phase, which literally meant the rebuilding of the shattered nation after the devastating Civil Wars, the African Americans experienced their first taste of freedom and liberty from the oppressive Jim Crow Laws, and embarked on their sojourn to economical and political emancipation. Though the new amendments and enactments of law during the period emphasized the need for freedom and equality to the blacks, the process sustained a setback during the civil wars, pushing the blacks back again into the dark dungeons of slavery. This can be summed up by the remarks of Robert Richardson, former Confederate General that “the emancipated slaves own nothing. For nothing besides freedom has been given to them” (Chapter 15: “W hat Is Freedom? 473). However, it is the same slavery and suffering from discrimination that emboldened them to raise their voice and inspired them to fight for freedom. Garrison Frazier, a black Baptiste Minister, states that slavery means “one person’s receiving by irresistible power the work of another man, and not by his consent” and he defines freedom as “placing us where we could reap the fruits of our own labor and take care of ourselves” and further adds that this could be accomplished by having “land and turn it and till it by our own labor” (Chapter 15: “W hat Is Freedom? 440). This contention, in itself, sums up the aspirations of the African Americans about their yearning to break free of the shackles of slavery with their desire to acquire and own land and achieve prosperity. Besides, they also have had a rightful purpose to attain progress through their own hard work, enshrining in their lives the concepts of equality and liberty at par the other citizens.
