Overcoming Difficulties During Puberty Stage The of the article “Puberty and Its Crisis. Educational Help in Overcoming Difficulties” Johannes Bockemühl revealed such questions as the problem of relationships between an adolescent and his parents, their mutual understanding, different ways of help to overcome difficulties during this period. He considered puberty as not only as sexual maturity, but also earthly maturity. “Earthly maturity identifies the possibility of familiarizing oneself with the world: the laws and principles at work on the earth, with other people and how to encounter them thoughtfully, sentiently, and actively.” (Bockemühl 2004). A special attention is paid for inner life of the young people, the search of their place in this world and self-acceptance.

The study of the peculiarities of puberty was conducted on the basis of the experience of educators, psychologists specializing in adolescence, school physicians and psychiatrists in natural conditions. There were three case studies on the examples of which the author showed consequences of negative influence of the incorrect childrearing. He distinguished three styles of such upbringing: intellectualizing, soulless and overprotective style. Three adolescent, two boys and one girl, who were brought up this way were taken for studies. It was clarified that parents’ excessive protection, masculine-imprinted form of interaction and inclination for explaining a child everything without giving him an opportunity to think independently caused to psychological shortcomings, alcohol or drugs addiction and criminal future. The author stated that “this could be avoided if parents and educators learn to recognize their own unbalanced behavior.” (Bockemühl 2004).

The results of the study exceeded expectations because appropriate pieces of advice for parents were selected. Johannes Bockemühl made a major contribution by proving that “it is important that parents and educators understand the young person not only as thinking individual, but also as someone who feels and acts.” (Bockemühl 2004). This way he advised not to use moralization, but on the contrary to listen to young people and understand them, to be compliant and to look back on the troublesome situation without making judgment.

Although puberty is the stage of tremendous physical and mental changing accompanied by different problems, it is still an important period of formation of personal identity. Following this article author’s recommendations parents will be successful in helping to overcome difficulties their adolescent children.

The former is an informal referencegroup since my classmates have no authority over me, whereas in the latter case my football team including myself are under the authority and direction of the coach and quarterback who stipulate when I must attend practice, what players will play in different situations and what plays will be used in games. On the other hand, while my classmates have no authority over my behavior, I want to feel part of the group so I wear similar clothes, study about the same amount, and hang out with them at parties and consume about the same amount of alcohol so that the others consider me part of the group as I display similar norms, behaviors and attitudes.

Three examples of the sociological significance of the concept of reference groups are the family, religious organizations and celebrities. Such groups are sociologically significant because they influence vast numbers of people to behave in similar ways.(Williams). For example, the formal family is the reference group an infant interacts most with in early life. Therefore the family is the institution charged with the responsibility of nurturing the child not only physically by providing adequate food and shelter, but also with socializing societal norms so that the child learns what his/her society consider to be right and wrong behavior. The importance of this socialization can be seen in the lack socially acceptable socialization when parents are absent, abusive or they are incapacitated by alcohol and/or drug dependency. Formal religious institutions can be very sociologically significant especially in populations considered disadvantaged. For example, in Muslim culture mosques can exert tremendous influence in either curbing unrest by teaching their members to accept their situation or they can foment strife by fostering anger towards Western values and encouraging people to join terrorist groups such as ISIS. Celebrities, an informal reference group can influence behavior especially among adolescents as they are role models encouraging by example their fantasies of mimicking their glamorous, successful and wealthy lives and selling their endorsed products .For example, girls starve themselves trying to develop model like figures in the hope of becoming movie stars. Boys become addicted to working out trying to become wealthy adulated athletes. In both cases few will achieve this sought after success, but this reference group is sociologically significant in influencing adolescent aspirations and norms.

In addition, parents can nurture good values of respect, honor, cooperation, and responsibility, which in turn help in good academic performance. In efforts to nurture and back up student’s effective and social growth as well as academic advancement, parents have been encouraged to build a communication system with the teachers, which will, in turn, help them in monitoring their student’s progress. Communication with the student will also help you to know what kind of support your child needs if financial or emotional support the earlier you solve their problems the higher they will feel motivated to perform better.
